Hub Update: February 27th 2012.

Well here we are at the end of February 2012, and a few movies from 2011 are still earning some money at the box office. All other variables that are used to calculate the scores earned by a movie are now complete. Hugo and The Artist were the big Oscar® winners this year and move to 12th and 19th place. The Artist is the only movie that looks like it can still make some headway on the rankings.

How Some of The Best Picture Oscar Nominees Have Done in the Last Six Weeks.

The Descandents is now ranked as the 10th best movie of the year.

Moneyball is now ranked as the 11th best movie of the year.

Hugo is now ranked as the 12th best movie of the year.

The Artist is now ranked as the 19th best movie of the year.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is now ranked as the 61st best movie of the year.

On the box office side....Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol crossed the 200 million dollar mark but remains in 7th place for the year, while Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows crossed the 180 million dollar mark for 9th place for the year.

I have been updating this hub for the last 9 months. Over those 9 months only three movies have topped the charts. Those three movies were in order....Rango, Fast Five, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2. Today's Oscar® nominations have moved a new movie to the top spot. The Help earned 4 Oscar® nominations including Best Picture and moves Harry Potter out of the way to claim the number one spot.

Table One: Top 10 Box Office Hits and Top 10 Critic/Audience movies of the year.

Table Two: The Top 50 Movies of 2011 according to Movie Score.

Table Three: Movies ranked #51 to #137 according to Movie Score.

Table Four: And the Worst 30 Movies of 2011 according to Movie Score.

Just a few more updates for this hub....as I track the last of the box office for movies released in 2011 and the Oscar® winners. In this update a new column with amount of Oscar® nominations a movie received has been added.

The final chapter of Harry Potter....was the biggest box office winner of the year and the 2nd highest rated movie according to critics and audiences.

So what the heck are Movie Scores?

Essentially you take the reviews of the experts like Roger Ebert and Leonard Maltin, the scores from Rotten Tomatoes, the public opinion votes from Yahoo Movies and IMDB, and the box office information from Box Office Guru and Box Office Mojo. Movie Score takes all of these options and creates a mathematical equation that generates a score from 1 to 100. The higher the score the better the movie.

My latest hubs....for your reading pleasure.

Hey nuttyforbuffalo ....well it is based strictly on numbers....and The Green Lantern still managed almost 120 million at the box office....compared to roughly 30 million for 50/50 and 60 million for The Lincoln Lawyer. If you look at the critic/audience rating....The Green Lantern is way down the list....with only a 45% score. I think all three movies you are in the Top 50...which is pretty good....an average score for all the movies I have done is 39.60...so all three beat the average....but their weaknesses...hold them back somewhat..thanks for the comment.

Green Lantern Above movies like 50/50 and the Lincoln Lawyer? I dont agree with that, but your top 20 were solid I would just switch a few.

Hey Stevennix2001....thanks for stopping by.....if you look at just the critic audience score ...Jack and Jill is the lowest rated movie of the year...at 17%....just beating another Sandler production...Bucky Larson: Born To Be A Star....Sandler's high water mark this year was Just Go With It at 41%....you can add up all three of his movies and their combined score still would not crack the Top 20 according to critics and audiences....no wonder he got so many Razzie Awards this year. I agree the Oscar show was much better this year.

wow, i'm very surprised to see that "Jack and Jill" didn't end up being rated as the number 1 worst movie last year. lol. i have to admit this year's oscars were better than last years, but it's sad that some of the movies that deserved a nomination for best picture got snubbed.

Hey Flora....thanks for the catch...I updated the stats late last night...but not the beginning part of the hub....but I just fixed it and now sharing it....I have been doing something with this hub for almost a year...and it finally looks like it could be completed soon...and then here comes a 2012 Movie hub.

That's a big bump for A seperation...

Yes, any film going to DVD is done with box office mostly. You might want to change the wording up at the top to say "Hub update February 27th." - that is why I got confused.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 2 months ago

Hey Flora....I did update the hub....actually not too much movement....as The Descendants moved into 10th place...while The Artist cracked the Top 20...at number 19....with a chance of moving up even more if it gets a box office bump in the upcoming weeks. Hugo reached 12th....but not thinking it is going to move up many more spots....especially with its DVD release being this week. The other big mover was A Seperation which went from 102nd to 71st....the only thing left for the scores are the last 10-15 movies from 2011 that are still making money in 2012 at the box office.

Looking forward to the update of this hub when you wake up tomorrow. We will see how the major awards The Artist got affects its position.

Well that is good news indeed Steve....I guess I should hurry up and watch the third one before good old Michael Bay assaults my brain with the fourth one....does Bay do any movies other than Transformers now? Thanks for the update.

Exciting news Bruce, Michael Bay will be directing a 4th Transformers movie! [bites fist] And I've heard it might be a reboot! [bites knee] The title is rumoured to be The Amazing Transformers Begins.

Hey Jack....well it is good to know my ranking system has pulled out some good movies...as all five of the movies you mentioned finished in the Top 12....not bad. Thanks for stopping by.

jack 3 months ago

harry potter, mission impossible and transformers are my favourites.

kung fu panda 2 and captain america are also good.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 3 months ago

Hey Flora....you did not miss much.....it is George Lucas at his worst.....it has a pod racing scene that is entertaining....but even that has some horrible acting in there as well.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 3 months ago

Hey Steve....I am very interested in seeing how well Phantom Menace 3D performs....I am thinking it will be a mild box office run....as I do not think many people(I am in that group) are interested in the second Star Wars trilogy. Well you have me beat as I have only seen 26 of the top 50 movies. I like you am stunned that Transformers is not the top movie so far....lol.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 3 months ago

Hey Flora...I am sure....and this is hard for me to say....that the Descandents is going to end up moving up even more in the next month...yeah for Clooney...lol. I think you will like Hugo whenever you get the chance to watch the movie.....and I think The Artist will also continue to move up the charts especially if it wins the Best Picture Oscar...thanks for the comments.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 3 months ago

Hey thatmovieguy1971....thanks for checking out my Top Films of 2011. I think having all three things is incredibly hard....box office, critical review, and award love. I think only The Help has reached all three categories...which is why it ranks number one...thanks for the compliment.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 3 months ago

Hey Stevennix2001....Looking at the Vegas odds....The Help is the 3rd best bet....The Artist is currently 1/5, The Descendants is 6 to 1, The Help is 10 to 1, Hugo is 14 to 1, everything else is over 20 to 1. I think The Help will pick up two acting Oscars though. I think when it is all said and done....this is going to be The Artist's year.

Star Wars The Phantom Menace out this weekend who's seeing it in 3-D? Flora? Bruce? :)

The Help no.1? gaaah! Who compiled your list, Rob?? Can you please put Transformers Dark of the Fallen back in it's rightful place Brucerson? :0

I've seen 33 of the top 50 which I'm quite pleased with, but it hasn't been one of the best film years. Hopefully we'll get some genuinely great movies released this year. When's Piranha 3DD coming out? ;)
