Nicolas Cage in 1987's Moonstruck. Hard to believe it has been 25 years since Moonstruck first came out.

When I first started writing hubs on HubPages, one of the first actors I picked(my oldest son's suggestion) was Nicolas Cage. I wrote the first Nicolas Cage hub on 1/28/2011. There have been many updates and remodels of the hub and here in February 2012 the hub is getting another update.

Some hub statistics: This is one of my least popular hubs. To date the hub has only received 616 views or a little less than 2 views per day. Since I wrote the hub, Nicolas Cage has had 4 movies open at the theaters and they all have been very disappointing. Season of the Witch finished as Cage's 42nd best movie, Drive Angry finished as his 39th best movie, Trespass finished as his 49th best movie(or 2nd worst...depending on how you look at things) and last weekend his latest movie Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance landed in 37th place after it's fourth weekend of release. 03/12/2012.

What you will get in this update. I finally have added his Top Ten Box Office table and his Top Ten Critics/Audience table. Many new photos and all of his movies ranked from 1st to 50th.

So what the heck are Movie Scores?

There are all kinds of ways to determine if you want to see or skip a movie. You can depend on your favorite critic. My favorites are Roger Ebert and Leonard Maltin. You might go to Rotten Tomatoes to get the consensus of all the critics. You might watch the viewer ratings at Yahoo Movies and IMDB. You might depend on which movies are doing the best at the box office. You might wait for the end of the year awards. Movie Score takes all of these options and creates a mathematical equation that generates a score from 1 to 100. The higher the score the better the movie.

I am not the biggest Cage fan, way too many bad movies, but I did like Moonstruck, it looks so young in that movie.

ruffridyer Level 4 Commenter 10 months ago

Nicolas Cage is one of my favorite actors, though I prefer his earlier work. Wild at Heart was one of the few David Lynch movies I understood. Cage and Dern were awesome.

Face-off was so much fun watching travolta channel cage and cage channel travolta.

I wondered how a taller man and a broader man could trade faces and their body types melded to it. Must be a science thing. I know it's only a movie just shut up and enjoy it.

Hey ruffridyer....I am impressed that you are able to understand a David Lynch movie....I have yet to find one of his movies that I can understand what is really going on.....I really liked Dafoe in Wild at Heart. Face-off is a guilty pleasure.....it is a great movie as long as you do think to hard about how logical it is....thanks for the comments.

ruffridyer Level 4 Commenter 10 months ago

I understood THAT lynch movie, at least the basics. My son watchs em and claims to know some of whats going on.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 10 months ago

I do not think even Lynch knows what is going on....Eraserhead is my best example of a movie that gives no clues what is going on.

To think if it wasn't for Nic Cage Johnny Depp might not be the famous sensational actor that he is today! (See my Depp hub if you are confused)

Wow does this hub need an update....it would be nice if he would have another quality movie open that would motivate me to do the facelift on one of my oldest hubs.

I actually understand your point...as I remember your letter to Mr. Depp. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comment.

I missed this hub last year, now its updated its an opportunity to check it out.

50 films? But he does churn them out, 4 or 5 films a year?

It looks like I'm a bit of a closet Cage fan, I've seen 39 of the 50 you've listed! eek.

Not a big Moonstruck fan, I'm more into his action roles, Face Off, Con-Air and The Rock are big faves, good to see them in the top 10. I saw them at the cinema too.

The last Nic Cage film I saw at the cinema was Kick-Ass which I loved and have watched many times on Blu-ray since. Bought the graphic novel too.

I've seen all ten of the box office chart and 8 from the critics chart, I have yet to see Birdy or Red Rock West.

Nic Cage is a very good actor when he wants to be, but he makes so many crappy films. Problem is I end up buying those crappy films while complaining about them. :)

I bought Sorcerer's Apprentice, Drive Angry and Season of the Witch on blu-ray, he shamelessly admitted.

Another winning hub Bruce, I hope it gets more views after this update.

Voted Up, Useful and Interesting.

Hey Steve...I think for the first time we are tied...as I have seen 39 of his movies as well. I loved KickAss as well and it is also in my blu-ray collection. I have been able to resist buying Sorcerer's Apprentice, Drive Angry and Season of the Witch...but I have seen them....I think Apprentice and Drive Angry are ok....but Season of the Witch is pretty bad. I would highly recommend Red Rock West as it is one of my favorite Cage movies. I have always wanted to see Birdy but never got around to it. I think Cage is going through a horrible time right now....everybody knows he has financial problems....so they assume the movie is going to be bad because they fell he had to make the movie for the money. I think he will bounce back...him and John Cusack have one coming out soon called On Frozen Ground....and it was filmed in Alaska where my oldest son lives....plus if things get real bad for him, he can always bring back Benjamin Gates for another National Treasure....thanks for the comments and the votes.

Cogerson.....While your hubs are always a treat to read...for the first time, I'm gonna have to say, this actor is no treat for me. I may never know what it is about Cage that basically turns me away from his movies. Although I liked ConAir, it had more to do with the story than it did with him....and I loved Moonstruck because of Cher. Crazy maybe, but I like Cher's acting abilities more than her music.

Any movies he's done that I have seen, have not been because he was in them. I guess I've seen 7 or 8....that's it.

Up++++ as always!

I am really hot and cold on Cage. Some of my favorites are Moonstruck, Adaptation, and World Trade Center.

FloraBreenRobison profile image

I haven't seen a large number of Cage's films.

Moonstruck is the only box office hit I've seen.

As for critics picks, besides Moonstruck, I have seen Adaption and Matchstick Men.

The top ten movie score titles:

I have seen Moonstruck and Peggy Sue Got Married.

The other films I've not yet mentioned at all that I've seen are, in movie score order:

It Could Happen to You

Gaurding Tess

That is a grand total of 6 movies, although I've lost track of the number of times I've seen Moonstruck and Peggy Sue Got Married.

Raising Arizona is top of my to-see list.

Hey fpherj48....sorry he is not your favorite actor....I think the fact that he has made so many bad movies hurts his overall appeal....as I am sure you are not the only person that Cage leaves feeling lukewarm at best. I wonder how many people like Cher's acting over her singing? I appreciate you commenting on the hub, especially since he is not one of your favorites.

Hey thatmovieguy1971....hot and cold seems to be a common theme for Nicolas Cage....I think he is currently in an Ice Age....but I think he will break free again. Thanks for the visit.

Hey Flora...first of all thanks for checking out my hub on one of the current actors. Six is not a bad showing considering every movie he has appeared was well after your birthday. I would say a good one to add to list with Raising Arizona...would be Red Rock West....it is a little film that is gaining a cult status...and is a throwback to crime noir movies that you like so much.

I would not recommend any of his recent movies as they have all been at best ok....and at worst some of the worst movies he has ever made. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Hey Stevennix2001...thanks for the visit....as for Ghost Rider...it was a pretty big hit for Cage....the sequel is not going to get close to the original's box office total...as I think it is going to fade pretty quickly.....I think he is going to have make another National Treasure to help turn the tide of his career.

Moonstruck is one of my all-time favorite movies. Sometimes Nic Cage can be so brilliant and sometimes I can't believe how ridiculous his movies are. Face Off? Come on; how did that movie score so highly?! But at least he can laugh at himself. Did you see him on Saturday Night Live recently doing a skit with the guy who impersonates him? Pretty funny stuff.

Hey Judi Bee....thanks for checking out my Nicolas Cage...his career seems to be going in the Michael Caine directional path....huge success early in his career....then a run of horrible movies that starts to end his leading man status....and a turn to character/supporting roles....I think Cage might be about to start his supporting role career....unless of course he makes another National Treasure soon.
