The best cricket movie ever made...2001's Lagaan.

See all 5 photos

This hub is part 5 in a series of hubs to try and determine the Top 100 Sports Movies Of All-Time. There are four parts to this hub....section 1 will look at 23 soccer movies, section 2 will look at 13 golf movies, section 3 will look at 15 movies that deal with either the winter or summer Olympics, and section 4 is an assortment of 31 movies from many various sports.....including Cricket and Curling.

The last part/hub will be racing.....which will include auto racing and horse racing.

To check out other hubs on other sports movie hubs check out the following links.

Part 1:.....Best Baseball Movies 52 movies

Part 2:.....Best Football Movies 47 movies

Part 3......Best Basketball and Hockey Movies 58 movies

Part 4.......Best Boxing Movies 61 movies

Part 6......Best Racing Movies 71 movies

Editor's Note: Goldfinger has a classic golf scene both in the novel and the book. I have listed Goldfinger with the golf movies but it is not being ranked as a golf movie as golf is not the major theme of the book or the movie.....but it is a great golf scene.

Obviously if you see a movie missing, just send a comment and I will include the movie.....documentaries and tv movies were eliminated from consideration. One more hub to go before I can figure out the Top 100 sports movies.

The highest rated soccer movie ..2003's Bend It Like Beckham.

Wow Cogerson you have been busy, first you go AWOL for a couple of weeks, now I get an e-mail that you have done 5 hubs in 2 days. Glad to see you back and publishing hubs again. Great idea, your final hub should be pretty good it looks like you have done lots of work in preparing that top 100 sports movies. Voted up.

Let me comment on this hub. I have seen one of the soccer movies, Gracie. A few of the golf ones, and several of the olympic ones, The Cutting Edge and Ice Castles are two of my favorite movies, they need to be ranked higher. So Langann is the best cricket movie ever made? I think it is the only cricket movie ever made. Voted up.

I didn't even know they made Cricket movies Cogerson, and look at all the soccer movies I didn't know existed, great find dude! :)

Bend it like Beckham no.1 soccer movie? Dear lord no, I'd much rather watch John Hustons worst movie, Victory, or Escape to Victory as it's known here.

Loved Shaolin Soccer, so much fun and totally ridiculous.

I have to report that my favourite Golf movie by far is Golffinger.

Good to see Rollerball (1975) on the chart, my favourite fictional sport and a great movie, IMO.

Btw folks this is the only place on the net where you'd find The Karate Kid rated higher than Paul Newman's The Hustler, kudos my friend! :)

Voted Up and Awesomeness.

Hey KellyE....yep I took some time away from hub pages....actually some of that time was spent trying to get a hub by the hub police....until I final gave up and started on this monster movie project. As for your two favorite movies...I am glad you like them...but I do not think they will make the Final 100. I am sure there are more cricket movies but the only one I have found so far is Lagaan. Thanks for stopping by and checking out my hub.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 10 months ago

Hey Steve.....let's see.....I think I would vote for Bend it like Beckman over Victory(and I am a huge Caine fan)...but to tell the truth I do not know if I have ever willing watched any soccer movie.

The original Rollerball is excellent the remake could be the worst remake ever.....hard to believe the same director behind Die Hard and Predator made that horrible movie.

As for Karate Kid over The Hustler....the original Karate Kid was a monster hit that critics and audiences loved. Hustler earned more Oscar noms....but was not the biggest hit at the box office....in fact it never made the Variety top film charts......but it least The Hustler beat the new Karate Kid.....all jokes aside after reading some reviews of Lagaan(the cricket movie), it really does look like a pretty good movie.

Hey mentalist acer....I assume you will be watching Caddyshack 1 and Rollerball the original....that sounds like a nice night of movies.....however a night of Caddyshack 2 and Rollerball remake...sounds like a long long night of movies....thanks for the comments.

Very good list. Although you forgot to mention "Dodgeball" starring Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller. Plus, wasn't the "Big Lebowski" a bowling movie if I'm not mistaken? I do apologize if I'm wrong, as I haven't seen that movie, but I heard it takes place mostly in a bowling alley. Anyways, thanks a lot for writing this again, as I look forward to seeing how well all the racing films do.

Voted up and useful!

Hey Stevennix2001....I thought about Dodgeball....but I forgot all about The Big Lebowski.....I will add both movies to the hub....I am now thinking the final hub will be around 400 versus 500....the search did find one of the few cricket and curling movies ever found.

Thanks for the compliment Sunshine625....so which Karate Kid do you speak of ....the new one or the old one.....it seems people that saw the original are not the biggest fans of the new one. Caddyshack is awesome and gets better every year....Chase and Murray look so young. As always thanks for checking out my hub.

I haven't seen the new one yet, even though I've been meaning to! I hear Jaden Smith was outstanding which doesn't surprise me...his dad is also! So the answer to your question will be....the original. Wax on, wax off! :)

Also, I don't know if we're counting the special olympics or not, but I guess you put in "the ringer" by Johnny Knoxville. although I never seen the movie, but heard it was terrible though. I guess you count that one in too as part of the olympics movies.

I have such fond memories of Personal Best, I can not believe that movie is almost 30 years old. Of your soccer movies the only one I have even heard of is the Stallone one. Your final list should be cool, I can tell you have done lots of research. Voted up.

The only golf movie I enjoy where golfing is a main theme-i.e. I don't think of Goldfinger as a golf film-is Caddyshack.

I haven't watched soccer films, though I do watch the World Cup.

Olympics:

I enjoy Chariots of Fire. Walk Don't Run was the final Cary Grant movie, but I haven't seen it yet.

Others I enjoy: listed in their ranking order with comments:

The Karate Kid-only the first

The Hustler

The Color of Money-anything with Newman is fun and finally he won an Oscar

Night and the City-I'm not surprised this made the top ten. This movie is nearly always discussed in any listing of Widmark films. He usually-not always-played evil characters in his early films, but this is an example of one he didn't- Poor Widmark was a loser at life and every thing he tried in the movie.

Regarding Men with Brooms-Leslie Nielson had lots of fans, but I think the movie suffered inthe states because, well, except for people who live in States like Minnesota, Americans don't play or watch Curling.

Hey Cogerson, considering I played indoor soccer last night i'd better mention the subject. Bend it like Beckham is one of the best all round movies ever moved on many different layers. It is about soccer, but much much more. I don't need to explain Mr movies, as you will already know. But anyone else out there who happens to read this and hasn't seen the movie, do so, as it is brilliant.

The dammed united is great too, depicting Brian Clough's 44 days as the Leeds UTD manager. A big headed, loud mouthed, ex-brilliant soccer who's goals per game ratio would be one of the highest ever, almost a goal per game. He had to retire aged 27 due to a knee injury.

Fever pitch, about soccer hooligans graphically demonstrates all the worst aspects of 'so called' soccer fans.

I haven't seen, or don't remember the other movies. cheers buddy, love it! (the hub)

Hey Flora....Caddyshack is a classic, I only put Goldfinger on the list because fellow hubber Steve Lensman strongly felt the movie should be included on the golf list. I am right there with you about soccer movies....I do not generally watch them...although I have seen and enjoyed Bend It Like Beckham. As for Walk Don't Run it takes place during the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics, not Grant's best movie....but I still root for him to get the girl...he has much more chemistry with main actress than the second male lead....you should check it out if for only to see Grant's final movie scene. I was glad when I saw Night and the City finished in the Top 10....while also easily beating out the DeNiro version as well. And finally I do not know if I would have found Men with Brooms without your help....so I thank you for suggesting that title.

Hey attemptedhumour....I remember that I watched Bend It Like Beckham...when I had this little crush on Keira Knightley...I was pleasantly surprised about how good the movie was.....I will have to see The Damned United as I do not think I have found a Michael Sheen movie that I did not like. Thanks for stopping by AlabamaGirl86....I am glad you are enjoying this hubs. I think I will have to have another table of all the sports movies that I have missed....and I will make sure Over the Top makes the final table...before the Top 100 hub finishes this hub subject.

Not a single surfing movie? Surfing is a sport my friend, even if you were lousy at it, you can not discriminate against it. If you have soccer you have to have surfing. Another great hub. Who would have thought a cricket movie would out perform a great bowling movie like Kingpin.

Hey Yankee fan, on the final part, #6, I will include some of the better surfing movies. As for Kingpin, a great comedy with an awesome Bill Murray. Thanks for stopping by and reminding me about my surfing issues.
