Paul Newman Movies-His Best & Worst-With Inflated Box Office Grosses/Results 1954-2006.
83Paul Newman in the classic 1967 movie Cool Hand Luke...the highest rated Newman movie according to critics and audiences.
One of the few things I remember from my college days was this little lesson......one of my professors was explaining Maslow's Hierarchy of Needspyramid and how self-actualization is the highest level a person can reach. The example he gave off a person that had reached the top of the pyramid was Paul Newman. During Newman's very successful 52 year movie career, he received nine Oscar nominations for acting......winning for The Color of Money. He also received two honorary Oscars in 1986 and 1994. His 56 movies averaged almost 100 million 2011 dollars at the box office per movie, while earning 98 Oscar nominations. I however believe he will ultimately be remembered for what he gave back to society. He started Newman's Own in 1982 with all profits being donated, after taxes, to various charitable organizations. To date they have donated nearly 300 million dollars. Newman also started the Hole in the Wall summer camp program. The camp serves nearly 15,000 seriously ill children every year, free of charge. Newman arranged for the continuation of the distribution of Newman's Own profits to charity after Newman's death through the establishment of the Newman's Own Foundation.
Ok....so let's starting talking about movies. Paul Newman is one of my favorite actors. My favorite movie of all-time is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Other Newman movies that I think are classics would include: The Sting, Cool Hand Luke, The Verdict, Nobody's Fool, Slap Shot and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Paul Newman passed away in September 2008. He is missed by movie fans all around the world. This hub will look at Paul Newman's career in a few different ways....first we will look at Newman's Top Ten movies based on box office numbers, then we will look at the Top Ten Newman movies based on highest critical score determined by critics and the audiences and finally we will rank all of Newman's 56 movies by Movie Score. Movie Score takes box office numbers, critical reception and award recognition and puts them all together and creates a score....100 is a perfect score.

Ok so you are wondering why use inflated vs actual grosses? In my opinion inflated gross numbers make it much easier to understand how an older movie would compare to todays movies. Let's look at Paul Newman's first ever movie 1954's The Silver Chalice. The Silver Chalice is Newman's worst rated movie of his career, considered a huge flop in 1954 yet it still managed to gross 7.04 million dollars and ranked 29th in 1954. In 2010 a movie grossing 7.04 million would have ranked 134th for the year. By knowing the box office gross and average ticket price....we can figure out tickets sold. The Silver Chalice sold over 15 million tickets. By using tickets sold, we can figure out how much a old movie would have made today by multiplying tickets sold by average ticket price in 2010 . If The Silver Chalice would have opened in 2010....it would have finished 21st for the year with 121.60 million in 2010....which would have finished almost tied with Leonardo DiCaprio's Shutter Island.

Newman and Elizabeth Taylor in his #1 movie 1958's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
The Best of Paul Newman:
#1 Cat on a Hot Tin Roof(1958)
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof was based on the play by Tennessee Williams and made a star out of Paul Newman. The movie was the 4th biggest hit of 1958, and was Newman's fifth biggest movie of his career with 256 million in 2011 dollars at the box office. Newman received his first of nine Oscar nominations for his role as Brick Pollitt, a drunk trying to live in the past. Elizabeth Taylor never looked prettier in her role as Brick's wife..... Maggie "The Cat", she would receive a Oscar nomination as well. References to Brick's homosexuality in the original play were removed from the screenplay to comply with the censors.
Paul Newman in 1973's Best Picture Oscar winner The Sting.
The Best of Paul Newman:
#2 The Sting(1973)
Robert Redford and Paul Newman appear in their second movie together after their hit Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Box Office Mojo has The Sting ranked as the 16th biggest box office hit of all-time when looking at inflated box office numbers. The movie was nominated for 10 Academy Awards. It won 7 Oscars including Best Picture of the year. Somehow the Academy nominated Robert Redford for Best Actor but managed to ignore Newman.
Newman and Robert Redford in the classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
The Best of Paul Newman:
#3 Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid(1969)
As stated before this movie is my favorite movie of all-time. Great scenes are everywhere in the movie.... like Newman on the bike with Katharine Ross, the freeze frame at the end of the movie, and the jump from the cliff.....Its loaded with great lines like..."Who are those guys", "What are you crazy....the fall will kill ya", and "Rules...... in a knife fight?" Steve McQueen was approached to play the Sundance Kid, but he passed on the movie because he wanted top billing over Newman. The movie was a smash hit, ranking #33 of all-time, and turned Redford into a superstar. I have not watched this movie since Newman passed away....I think the next to I watch the movie it will be bittersweet. For a great hub on this movie check out Boomer Flick's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid hub.
Newman and Faye Dunaway in 1974's The Towering Inferno.
The Best of Paul Newman:
#4 The Towering Inferno(1974)
Steve McQueen finally got his top billing over Paul Newman in this blockbuster disaster movie. To provide dual top billing, the credits were arranged diagonally so it looked like both had top billing. Newman and McQueen were part of an all-star cast that included....Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire, William Holden, Jennifer Jones and O.J. Simpson. The movie is ranked #52 on all the all-time inflated box office table with over 454 million in 2011 box office dollars. It received eight Oscar nominations....including a Best Picture nomination....it won 3 Oscars.
Newman in The Verdict......the movie most people think he should have won his Oscar for instead of The Color of Money.
The Best of Paul Newman:
#5 The Verdict(1982)
Paul Newman gave one his greatest performances in this legal drama. Newman played a down-on-his-luck alcoholic lawyer who gets one final chance to redeem himself. He received his sixth Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his role. Newman was the clear favorite to finally win his first Oscar, but he was upset by Ben Kingsley's portrayal of Gandhi. When he finally won for The Color of Money, Newman was not present to accept his award. The Verdict was Newman's 7th biggest box office hit with over 158 million in 2011 box office dollars.
Check out the court observers(especially at the 2 minute mark) in the background.....Jigsaw and McClane watching Newman do his magic.

When 'the sting' came out everyone was going on about it. I shut my ears as i didn't want the movie spoilt. My mom was mentally ill at the time but i took her along to watch the movie. It is the number one movie of all 'my' time, that has had the most impact on me. I discussed the movie with my mom on the drive home and she knew exactly what went on. I absolutely loved it and saw it again a couple of years back and still loved it. Butch Cassidy and the sun-dance kid was brilliant too, along with many more of Paul Newman's movies. One of his quotes i remember from him, probably on the Michael Parkinson show, was when he was asked about the temptations of stardom.
His reply was. "Why go out looking for a hamburger, when you have filet mignon at home." What a great man, what a true star. What a great hub. Cheers. PS Do you get the Michael Parkinson show in the US?
The first Paul Newman film I remember seeing was Butch Cassidy, at the cinema, really enjoyed it. I skipped The Sting and saw The Towering Inferno which became a favourite and caught it again at the cinema when it was re-released in the early 80's.
I liked Newman but I was never a big fan, I was more into Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson back then.
I have a bunch of his films on DVD, Butch Cassidy, The Sting, Cool Hand Luke of course, great film. The Hustler and The Color of Money, Road to Perdition many more.
The Silver Chalice was awful but I thought the set design was interesting. Very sparse and artificial unlike the more lavish epics released in the 50's.
A useful hub on a Hollywood legend Conanson. Now how about hubs on McQueen and Bronson or have you done them already? :)
Voted up and cool.
Wonderful movie tribute for an amazing actor! I enjoyed his movies but was more impressed with his personal life and legacy. His inspiring 50 year marriage to Joanne Woodward and his charity work with Newman's Own products. ALL proceeds supposedly go to charity....he was unique. Great hub! Up/Awesome/Tweet/smile from me :)
I saw The Sting later on video, not as good as Butch Cassidy I thought but still enjoyable. I have to confess I've never seen The Verdict, not being a fan I wasn't actively seeking out his films.
I wasn't a Robert Redford or Warren Beatty fan either. But I did catch up with many of their films later on vhs and dvd.
I'll check out your Steve McQueen hub. Cheers.
Cool Hand Luke,Sting,Butch Cassidy are some of my first memories of going to the movies...r.i.p.Paul.;)
Great hub Cogerson. Paul Newman has many classic movies but my favorites are The Secret War of Harry Figg and Fort Apache The Bronx, along with the other classics everybody is mentioning. As for the Bruce Willis video, freaking hilarious, it is amazing how he stands out, it actually looks like a joke or trick editing to insert him in the frame. Same goes for Jigsaw. Voted up.
Hoho I forgot what Willis looked like with hair. Did he have a part in the film or just happened to be an extra in that scene?
Paul Newman was a great actor. My husband and I thought he should have won the oscar for The Verdict as he played that role so well. He has made so many great movies and Torn Curtain with Julie Andrews was good. I agree that his charity work is just wonderful - giving back - many stars donate time and money which is a very good thing. Plus knowing that his charity work continues even though he is gone - GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN. THANKS FOR A GREAT HUB...Yeah, married a long time - JUST LIKE ME..................
Speaking of Willis, what no hub? Or did I miss that too? :)
Another Newman film I saw at the cinema back in the 70's and enjoyed was Slap Shot. I should watch it again it's been ages, maybe not as funny now as I remember it.
Excellent hub. I always loved Paul Newman. He portrayed so amny different characters over the years. I was a amazed to see when he was on a chat show how shy he was.
I remember Maslow's pyramid, and Newman probably is someone who reached the top. Great Willis find on the video, he looks very young. My favorite Newman movie is Slap Shot, a great comedy all it needed was Redford to make it complete. Voted up and useful.
Michael Caine was on Parky, but an English comedian named Jim Davidson came on before him. Parky asked him something like. "How did you get started in the business?" His reply was. "Funnily enough it reminds me of the Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman." Every question he answered with one of his old jokes. Michael Caine came on and was twice as funny just being himself. Oh well must dash. Cheers
Butch Cassidy is the man. Slap Shot is hilarios. Give the man his due. Great actor and great person.
Yet another excellent hub! Like everyone else, I love Newman's top films but I have some lesser favorites: 'Hombre' is a great old school Western if you can accept Newman as half Native American; 'Winning' is a decent auto racing flick with an interesting inconclusive ending; and 'Mr. and Mrs. Bridge', an adaptation of the novel that stars Newman and his wife, Joanne Woodward, as - you guessed it - Mr. and Mrs. Bridge. Woodward was nominated for almost every Best Actress award there is for her performance.
Nice hub Cogerson, I have seen a few of his movies. I guess I need to check out Butch Cassidy. Thanks for sharing this information.
Paul newman is one of the best. I have never killed a man before.
Now you're talking.:) What can I say that hasn't already been said? This is a definite keeper. I would have sworn I've seen every movie he's ever appeared in. Your thorough listings always remind me of just how much I've missed and how much I have to look forward to.
up/useful and awesome
GREAT HUB! Not only informative but well written. Looks like lots of research went into this one, and I don't think there are too many people out there that don't have a favorite Paul Newman movie. He was not only a great movie star, with incredible blue eyes, but a true gentleman and humanitarian as you pointed out. Voted up.
Paul Newman was a class act. I thought Newman and Redford should have done one last movie together, They could play aging actors who starred together on an old western movie. yrs later, cantankerous and feuding they are called out of retirement to have cameos in the remake and keep bickering with each other and the director.
My five favourite Newman films are, in alphabetical order:
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Cool Hand Luke
Hud
The Hustler
The Sting
I also enjoy The Towering Infero, The Sweet Bird of Youth,Harper, and Absense of Malice.
He made one film with Alfred Hitchcock late in the director's career-Torn Curtain. It wasn't the best film or either of them, but it has this excellent scene that shows how difficult it is to kill someone with a knife, instead of far away with a gun.
I love Newman films in general. And though I usually don't watch recent films, I have seen Road to Perdition twice.
Good page Cogerson about one of my all-time favourite film stars, who brought a nice wry comic touch to so many of his movies. Glad to see 'Butch Cassidy' and 'The Sting' so high on the list (though I must admit I would put 'The Sting' slightly ahead of your favourite as I think the script is so clever in that movie). Both though are in my top 100. I'm not a great fan of disaster movies, because they're so often cliche ridden, but one of the very best has to be 'The Towering Inferno'. Interesting how they arranged the top billing for Newman and McQueen!
Two films from lower down the list are also favourites of mine. I liked 'The Prize' when I first saw it years ago. It looked a bit slow and dated when I saw it again recently, but still a really nice slightly mystery comic thriller of the kind they did so well in the 60s. And 'Torn Curtain' - much maligned as a Hitchcock film - but with two great scenes - the bus ride at the end, and that very brutal and very realistic fight with the German agent in the kitchen.
Well done. Voted accordingly.
'The Prize' has a similar feel and similar mix of comedy, mystery and thriller to 'North by NorthWest' and 'Charade'. If you like them, you'll probably like 'The Prize'
I wouldn't suggest it's quite as good as either of those after my recent viewing, as it does seem a little slow to get going, but it's got a good plot (a double takes the place of a kidnapped Nobel Prize Winner, and nobody believes Newman when he realises something is wrong). Newman is at his best in a lightly comic 'ordinary guy forced to become a hero' role, and it co-stars Edward G Robinson, which must be a plus.

A terrific actor. I've always enjoyed his work. He had this certain charisma that few actors could match. I think his best performance was between "the Hustler" and "Cool Hand Luke", but my personal favorite was in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid".
He once said he thought his worst performance was in "the Silver Chalice", which I would agree with.
