Morgan Freeman Movies-Best to Worst-From Brubaker to Dolphin Tale.
75Morgan Freeman as "Red" in his #12 movie The Shawshank Redemption.
Update! Morgan Freeman's latest movie, Dolphin Tale, arrived in theaters after writing the hub...so far Dolphin Tale has made it to the 22nd spot on the charts...but its box office run is just about over and I do not see Dolphin Tale moving up anymore spots.
Before doing this hub, I would have told you the actor that I became first aware of as a kid ..... was John Wayne. Turns out the answer has to Morgan Freeman. Freeman appeared on PBS's The Electric Company from 1971 to 1977. I was in kindergarten in 1972, and The Electric Company was required viewing. I remember seeing Freeman in the trailer for 1980's Brubaker, and telling my brother..."Hey its that guy from the Electric Company"....ok enough about me. In 1987 Freeman played Fast Eddie, a very brutal pimp, in Smart Street. He received his first Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for that role, and his movie career has never looked back. Since those early days, he has become one of the most respected actors working today.
He has won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in Million Dollar Baby and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in Driving Mrs. Daisy. Besides the forementioned wins and nominations, he has also received 3 more Academy Award nominations and 3 more Golden Globe nominations. He has been involved in some of the best movies made in the last twenty-five years. Movies like The Shawshank Redemption, Se7en, Driving Miss Daisy, Glory, Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.
The attached table ranks all of Morgan Freeman's movies. Movies are ranked by Movie Score. Movie Score is calculated by using factors such as box office grosses, opening weekend, amount of weeks in Top 5 and Top 10, critical opinions, audience opinions, and award recognition. Since 2005 he has appeared in four movies that went straight to DVD, those movies(The Contract, Edison Force, Maiden Heist, and Thick as Thieves) are not included in the table.
Before we get to the table, let's talk about ....The Shawshank Redemption. Shawshank comes in at #12. Why #12 and not higher? One reason and only one reason...it performed poorly at the box office. It was not discovered until it reached the home market via VHS and DVD. So it's score reflects the poor box office result....but I do think it is a great movie.
Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson in 2007's The Bucket List...movie was a hit with over 108.00 million...but not enough to crack his Top Ten in box office hit

#1 Driving Miss Daisy(Movie Score 87.91)
The Best of Morgan Freeman.
Driving Miss Daisy was the winner of the 1990 Best Picture Academy Award. Morgan Freeman was Oscar nominated as Best Actor and won the the Golden Globe Best Actor award. Jessica Tandy became the oldest Oscar winner for her performance as Miss Daisy(she was 81). This movie was so well received even comedian Dan Aykroyd received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. This is Freeman's 6th biggest box office hit with almost 27 million in ticket sales.
#2 Unforgiven(Movie Score 79.73).
The Best of Morgan Freeman.
Directed by Clint Eastwood, Unforgiven won the 1993 Best Picture Academy Award. Freeman played Eastwood's best friend, Ned Logan, in one of the greatest westerns ever produced. Eastwood won two Oscars for the movie, and Gene Hackman picked up his second Academy Award for playing Sheriff Little Bill Daggett. To date, Eastwood has directed Morgan Freeman in three movies(Invictus and Million Dollar Baby). Unforgiven is Freeman's 7th biggest box office hit with nearly 200 million 2011 inflated dollars.
#3 The Dark Knight(Movie Score 79.19)
The Best of Morgan Freeman.
The Dark Knight is the third biggest blockbuster ever(trailing only Avatar and Titanic). Morgan Freeman returned to his Lucius Fox role that started with 2005's Batman Begins. Dark Knight's critic and audience score is at 92%, the highest for any Freeman movie.....yes.... even beating The Shawshank Redemption. Morgan Freeman will be returning as Lucius Fox for the final part of the Batman trilogy. The Dark Knight Rises will be released in 2012.
#4 Million Dollar Baby(Movie Score 78.70)
The Best of Morgan Freeman.
Morgan Freeman won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in Million Dollar Baby. It marked the second time Morgan Freeman appeared in a Clint Eastwood movie. Million Dollar Baby won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2005. Eastwood once again won the Best Director and Best Picture Oscar. While Hilary Swank took home the Oscar for Best Actress. This is Freeman's 9th biggest box office hit with 128.80 million in 2011 inflated dollars.
#5 Se7en(Movie Score 70.85)
The Best of Morgan Freeman.
Coming in at number five is 1995's Se7en. Se7en is about two(Brad Pitt and Freeman) homicide detectives' desperate hunt for a serial killer. The movie also co-stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey. The ending of the movie is one of the most memorable endings ever filmed. Internet Movie Database has this movie ranked number 27 of all time. It is Freeman's 8th biggest box office hit with 182.80 million in 2011 inflated dollars.
Movie Score card for # 8 Bruce Almighty
So what the heck are Movie Scores?
There are all kinds of ways to determine if you want to see or skip a movie. You can depend on your favorite critic. My favorites are Roger Ebert and Leonard Maltin. You might go to Rotten Tomatoes to get the consensus of all the critics. You might watch the viewer ratings at Yahoo Movies and IMDB. You might depend on which movies are doing the best at the box office. You might wait for the end of the year awards. Movie Score takes all of these options and creates a mathematical equation that generates a score from 1 to 100. The higher the score the better the movie.

I can't honestly say I've ever seen him in a role I didn't like. Whatever one might think of him...he keeps a job. :)
voted up/very usefful
I love Morgan Freeman. If he's in the line up I will watch it.
Voted up!! There isn't a Morgan Freeman that I didn't like. Thank you for the hub Bruce!!
I notice that for this mega-talented performers such as Morgan, that his bad movies are few and far between.Shawshank was a breath taking epic visual proving Morgan Freeman is immortal, thanks Cogerson.;)
Great hub, voted up. I don't think there is any such thing as a bad Morgan Freeman Film.
I like Morgan Freeman and he played such a good role in Shawshank Redemption. Also liked him in The Sum of All Fears. Kiss the Girls was good but morbid - a great actor. ENJOY YOUR HUBS VERY MUCH COGERSON.
Great hub. Thank you for explaining why Shawshank is so low. It is currently rated the number 1 movie on IMDB. I did not know that it was such a disappointment at the box office. Voted up
I love this man's talent and his voice! Awesome hub. Voted up. =)
My favorite was 'Unforgiven', hands down.
Wow what a great list of movies he has made, I loved him in Bruce Almighty, Gone Baby Gone and Red. Shawshank is a movie I can watch over and over.
Great hub, I think Morgan Freeman is one of the most reliable actors working today. My favorite Freeman movies would be Glory and Under Suspicion. Thanks for posting, where is your Robert Deniro or Al Pacino hubs?
Great hub as always Cogerson, I love Morgan Freeman movies, even if it's just his voice. The Shawshank Redemption was a great movie and I'm surprised it's so low down, I saw Freeman in Batman Begins but have yet to see the Dark Knight, it's on my list! Million Dollar Baby was also great, I don't remember the ending to Se7ven it's a while since I saw it.
I know he's been in lots of films but whenever I see him I think of him as God from Bruce Almighty! Morgan's a good actor. Great hub!
Hey, lots of comments on Morgan Freeman. Everyone is enjoying your HUB along with me. Looking forward to another new HUB. What is the little one standing next to on photo at top of your HUB?
I love Morgan Freeman - he's great in any role, whether he's being funny or serious or anything in between. He's just got such presence...and that voice! Great hub. :-)
I love Red in Shawshank. "Get busy livin' or get busy dyin'".
How did I miss this hub? I love Morgan Freeman. Great actor, great voice. There's an advert on tv here where someone does a very good impression of his voice, had me fooled. :)
Seven and Shawshank Redemption are two top favourites and two of the greatest films of the 90's. Oh and Unforgiven too. That decade produced so many great films.
Another classic hub Cogerson, cheers. Voted up and useful.
Yep Shawshank wasn't a hit at the cinema, the title and lack of big stars didn't help, I gave it a miss at the cinema. But on video it started getting noticed and people were recommending it to their friends and it really snowballed into this hugely respected and loved movie. It's been voted greatest film ever made on a few occasions and it's still no.1 on IMDB's Top 250. Not bad for a box office disappointment eh? :)
Hey Cogerson, You have been a busy writer since I last posted, you need to get a job, lol. Morgan Freeman is one of my favorites, my Top 3 would be Shawshank, Glory and Deep Impact. Voted up.
Great list that you have compiled, he has had a very impressive run.
Very good like always. Was Driving Miss Daisy really that good of a movie?
Morgan Freeman is a great actor. Thanks for reminding me of the many roles I forgot he was in. As usual, this is such a well done hub. Rated up and useful.
Good stuff! Morgan is one of my all time favorites. I watched Electric Company in the 60s and early 70s and that is where I first saw Morgan. No matter what tough guy he plays in a movie I always think of him as he was in the Electric Company
So far no one mentioned Lucky # Slevin, Freeman plays a bad man. I didn't feel abit sorry for him or Ben Kingsly at the end.
Personaly I hated the movie Seven, The idea of killing people over their sins is dumb. It is why I don't like the Saw movies. Also it was so depressing, especially when Paltrow told Morgan she was pregnant. He then asks her if they were going to keep the baby or abort it. They were married, Loved each other, he had a good job. Why would that question even come up. Was their world that scewed up?
Antway Morgan Freeman was like the wise friendly uncle everyone wants to have. In most of his films.
For anyone in Canada who loves Morgan Freeman-Bravo! is airing AFI's Lifetime Achievement Award to him tomorrow night-Monday, July 4th-at 5pm Pacific.
I simply must say that I love Driving Miss Daisy and that this movie was the first I heard of Freeman. I recently saw RED for the great cast and I enjoyed it. I uunderstand from people who go to recent movies regularily that this was a retread of others, but since I don't normally go out to new movies and I love the cast, I loved it.
Regarding other movies:'
I've seen his narration of the penguin documentary-beautiful
I enjoyed The Shawshank Redemption and Unforgiven. Although Million Dollar Baby is hailed, I don't think I could stand watching it. I'm not big on boxing films anyway, and this was also a bit heavy for me for where I was when the movie was released.
Oh and I've seen Brubaker. Not a favourite of mine, but I enjoyed it while I was watching it.
I suspected there was a Morgan Freeman hub! Whoever requested a hub for this excellent actor has exquisite taste! Just sayin :)
3 months?!?! Wow time sure does fly when you are having fun!!
Yay an updated Morgan Freeman hub! I haven't paid much attention to Dolphin Tales...I haven't seen any trailers or tv commercials for it. The Shawshank Redemption still remains my favorite Morgan Freeman movie. Morgan is the man....so is cogerson, thank you for dusting off Mr Freeman!
Morgan Freeman....couldn't play a less than perfect role if he tried like heck! The man is one of the VERY best. His movies are all so fabulous, it's very difficult to choose a favorite
BTW, Cogerson....Wonderful Interview. I read it a couple of times!!
My latest and greatest hubs.

Morgan Freeman is one of the most consistant and reliable actors in the business. He always brings a kind of dignity to his roles. My favorite film of his is "Unforgiven".
I remember being a young kid and watching him, Bill Cosby and Rita Moreno (And a few other people who's names I don't remember) in the Electirc Company. I adored that show when I was in elementary school.
