Hub Update: Journey 2: Mysterious Island, Michael Caine's latest movie has already moved up to the 20th spot on the rankings. 04/01/2012.

My father introduced me to Michael Caine in the movie The Man Who Would Be King. Since that 1975 movie I have followed his career very closely. I am probably one of the few people on Earth who not only saw The Swarm at the theater but also Beyond the Poseidon Adventure at the theater. After years of struggling as an actor, in the mid 1960s he finally became a star with the British films Zulu, Alfie, and Ipcress Files. Since then he has starred in roughly 80 movies. Over the years Caine has received 6 Oscar® nominations and 2 Oscar® wins. As he approaches 80, not only is he still popular but he is still appearing in some the biggest movies out there(Inception, Batman trilogy). Currently he is director Christopher Nolan's good luck charm. Caine has appeared in the last 4 Nolan films and is currently shooting The Dark Knight Rises with Nolan directing.

Michael Caine in 2002's Austin Powers in Goldmember...Caines 3rd biggest blockbuster hit with 292.55 million in 2011 dollars.

Michael Caine and Robert Duvall in one of my favorite Caine movies......2003's Secondhand Lions.

My Personal Top Ten Movies That Star Michael Caine In Alphabetical Order.

#1 Batman Begins(2005)...Caine has a much bigger part in the first part of Christopher Nolan's trilogy...so I tend to watch Batman Begins more often than the Dark Knight.

#2 A Bridge Too Far(1977) ....One of the last epic war movies, an all-star cast that has some humor while telling the true story of World War II's Operation: Market Garden. I watch this movie at least once a year.

#3 Children of Men(2006) ... Caine has a supporting role in this movie about a future were babies are no longer being born...Clive Owen is also awesome in the lead role.

#4 Deathtrap(1982) ....Based on a stage play, Caine is outstanding as a famous writer who is suffering from writer's block. Has an unusual twist in the middle of the movie. A nice companion movie to 1972's Sleuth.

#5 Dirty Rotten Scroundrels(1988)....Caine and Steve Martin play dueling con men in this very funny remake of the Marlon Brando and David Niven film Bedtime Stories.

#6 The Man Who Would Be King(1975) ...You get Caine, Sean Connery and legendary director John Huston in this adventure film that almost starred Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable back in the 1950s.

#7 The Prestige(2006)....Caine's 2nd of 5 movies with director Christopher Nolan. Caine plays the middle man as Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman wage in a brutal personal conflict.

#8 Secondhand Lions(2003)...Caine and Robert Duvall play very eccentric uncles to Haley Joel Osment in this comedy drama. I laughed for days at the ending at this almost forgotten gem of a movie.

#9 Sleuth(1972)....Caine goes toe to toe with Sir Laurence Olivier as movie characters and in acting ability. Both men got Oscar® nominations for Best Actor for their roles in Sleuth. Avoid the 2007 remake that also stars Caine as it is pretty horrible.

#10 Zulu(1964)....Caine's first big break came in this excellent movie. Although he had appeared in many movies prior to Zulu...he got the credit of Introducing Michael Caine. The success of Zulu helped him get his Alfie role and then he never looked back again.

Counting these favorite Caine movies on this list, I have seen 68 of the 80 movies listed on this table....or 85% of his movies.

So what the heck are Movie Scores?

There are all kinds of ways to determine if you want to see or skip a movie. You can depend on your favorite critic. My favorites are Roger Ebert and Leonard Maltin. You might go to Rotten Tomatoes to get the consensus of all the critics. You might watch the viewer ratings at Yahoo Movies and IMDB. You might depend on which movies are doing the best at the box office. You might wait for the end of the year awards. Movie Score takes all of these options and creates a mathematical equation that generates a score from 1 to 100. The higher the score the better the movie.

Nice and comprehensive hub on a British stalwart. Great level of detail and a good list of films to catch up on. Sir Michael is an 'institution' with his unique acting style and varied roles. Thanks for this! voted up.

Thank you....I just wish I could have found more information for some of his movies made in England between 1967 and 1976....very hard stuff to find.....As for the remakes....Hollywood has already redone...The Italian Job, Alfie, Sleuth, and Get Carter and it looks like some more remakes are coming.

Zulu is an epic. Educating Rita is probably my favourite. Liked Harry Brown. Love Michael Caine, great nostalgic hub. Cheers from Melbourne.

Michael Caine has said that Educating Rita is his favorite of all his movies he has ever made. In the states Harry Brown did not have much of a release.....Caine on the Harry Brown DVD commentary is hilarious....thanks for reading

Enjoyed watching Michael Caine accept his Oscar...I liked the Man Who Would Be King a whole lot. Watched Sean Connery too - he is a very good actor and he was also in The Man Who Would Be King. They did a good job on that movie together. THANKS. WILL WATCH MORE ACCEPTANCE OF OSCAR LATER ON.

I loved him in 'Zulu'. Fantastic film. Very good actor.

I can't believe I've seen so few Michael Caine movies! But then again, he is a very good actor, so he would have a ton of movies...Gotta get started!

That is a helluva long list....you have impressed me....although I do not think you can give him full credit for Inception....

Pretty impressive amount of information on Caine...you need more people from the 60s and 70s like Connery, Hackman, Pacino, Brando

Showtime had The Fourth Protcol with Michael Caine - pretty good plot...On Deadly Ground was a good movie but he played a bad greedy guy - did the role well. Thanks for all the information coming out of your BLOG.

Michael Caine is such a great talent. He's done so many amazing roles. "The Man Who Would Be King" is my favorite Caine film. He's a cinema legend. I just hope future generations remember him as more than just Batman's butler. He's done so much.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 15 months ago

I agree with you Robwrite about the Man Who Would Be King....it also has an awesome back story in that John Huston originally wanted to make the movie with Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart...other also considered over many years.. Burt Lancaster/Kirk Douglas ....and then a Robert Redford/Paul Newman possibility...Paul Newman is the one that suggested Caine/Connery

Sir Michael Caine is one of my fave actors of all time. Long ago I discovered him in an offbeat movie named, "Blame It On Rio". Since then and afterwards the British actor became a legend of Hollywood. Great hub... voted up! Thanks for sharing all the info about him.

Michael Caine was on the Michael Parkinson show. There was an English comedian on before him who told decent stand up jokes when he performed, but wasn't really very funny. Michael Caine came on and was hilarious.

I agree with you attempted humor, I have actually seen some episodes of Caine on the Michael Parkinson and he is very funny. Also agree with you Dolores you need to watch the original Alfie....the remake with Jude Law was not too good. Thanks for reading the Michael Caine list

Which film? Anyone? I'm a big Caine fan, so many good films and plenty of stinkers too.

Favourites include - Sleuth, Zulu, The Man Who Would be King, Italian Job, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels etc too many to list here.

Good work as usual.

p.s. I saw The Swarm at the cinema too.

The quote is from The Italian Job, the original one I should mention, it is one of the funnier scenes in the movie, when they blow up the car.

I have not seen The Swarm, despite it starring a favourite of mine-Richard Widmark. Widmark said that the only reason he made the movie was the chance to work with Caine.

My top Michael Caine movies in alphabetical order are:

Alfie

California Suite

Deathtrap

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Get Carter

The Italian Job

Little Voice

Noises Off

Sleuth

Without a Clue

Hey Flora, I have always liked Michael Caine, my late father looked alot like him in my opinion....minus the British accent of course. As for The Swarm....one of Michael Caine's favorite sayings is "I know the movie is a horrible mess....but the house that I bought with movie from that movie is very beautiful".

Nice Top Ten list.....Little Voice(he plays a great jerk in that one) and Noises Off are very good little known movies.....I always viewed Deathtrap and Sleuth(the first one) as brothers....great stage like movies....I wish they would have not made the second Sleuth....as always I appreciate you reading and commenting on my hubs.

@Cogerson...A slew of Michael Caine movies are on my shelves, but his work in "Cider House Rules" is my favorite, closely crowded by "The Quiet American". In both, he portrays hopelessness to the hilt.

You do wonderful hubs for true Hollywood lovers of past stars, as well!

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 9 months ago

Hey Barbsbitnpieces. Sir Michael Caine is one of my favorite actors, I have closely followed his career since seeing The Man Who Would Be King at the theater with my father. Cider House Rules and The Quiet American are indeed two of his greatest roles. The Quiet American almost did not get released(it was supposed to be released after 9/11 but the studio was nervous about the content of the movie)...but Michael Caine begged them to release about a year later....and he got his 6th and so far last Oscar nomination.....Brendan Fraser is outstanding as well in The Quiet American...that last sentence does not get typed too often. Thanks for the comment and the great compliment.

@Cogerson...That's cool to see live theatre! It just makes you appreciate the acting life that much more! And it certainly would cement your opinion of a great like Michael Caine!

In my country-side life, I was privileged to see (way back in the '60s!) a live performance of "Cabaret" with Joel Grey and old Andy DeVine in a Columbus , Ohio theatre. I've never forgotten the reality of that experience!

When I was married a few years later to a Vermonter truck driver, I took our two youngsters one night to a countryside theatre in Vermont to view "The King and I" to give them the experience, and they have lifelong appreciated movie and live theatre performances, too!

Keep up the great work!

Michael Caine is one of my favourite actors but he has made a few stinkers! I think he's a very underrated comic actor, he has great timing - I loved him in Miss Congeniality, California Suite and especially in Dirty, Rotten Scoundrels and Little Voice. I hated his character in Alfie, though the film was very good and he's great as Harry Palmer. He seems to get better with age.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 6 months ago

Hey Jools99....he is one of my favorite actors of all time...he joins Cary Grant and Bruce Willis on that list. Luckily his stinkers are few and far between as he has gotten older and has gotten away from making movies for money reasons only. I agree with you that he is a very underrated comic actor...I would even include that with the Batman trilogy as well. I like all the movies you mentioned and would include Zulu and The Man Who Would Be King as well....thanks for checking out my Caine hub....this hub will be getting a HubPage facelift in the next week or so...and will include about 5 more movies that I have found box office information since writing this hub.

I saw Dressed To kill on PBS last night. I don't think I would have watched it through the end if Caine wasn't in it. It was well made, but Psycho has too many sequels and it was obvious to me everything that happened before it did. Even if I hadn't known this was an homage to Hitchcock/hadn't seen Psycho why else is Caine in the film if he is not the killer? Perkins wasn't a movie star yet in 1960. Caine was when he made this. He is not the victim and he is not the person doing the investigating. as tar in a murder film must be the killer, the detective or the victim. He is too big to have an irrelevant part. The ending was over the top and puts it a way like farce to me. It would have ended better with a wrap up instead of the dream sequence. I also found myself seeing this as a cross between Psycho and Peeping Tom. I still haven't seen that movie, but I couldn't help thinking of it withthat kid spying (albeit for different motives). I think he should have chosen a different Hitch film to emulate, one that hadn't been done to death in sequels.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 5 months ago

Hey Flora, well the director Brian De Palma became somewhat famous for making current(at the time) movies with Hitchcock similar storylines. Dressed to Kill follows Psycho and a little bit of Spellbound. His next movie Body Double...took Vertigo and Rear Window and combined them into one movie.

I agree with you about Caine in the movie....when he does not fall in love with Angie Dickinson's character and then is not there to save her....two plot lines the star might get....which really only leaves the fact that Caine is the killer. Good points about Dressed to Kill being a cross between Psycho and Peeping Tom.

I saw a interview with Caine talking about Hitchcock, Caine said Hitch wanted him for the role of the killer in Frenzy....if you think about the bad guy that Hitch picked he could easily pass for a Caine double...thanks as always for the comments.....wow do I need to update this hub.

Wow you're a much bigger fan of Michael Caine than I am Cogerson, kind of ironic considering I'm English.

I've seen 42 of the 80 films you've listed. You've seen an astounding 68 of his films!

I have missed a lot of his recent work, I haven't seen Cider House Rules, The Quiet American or Little Voice.

I am a fan of his 60's and 70's work particularly Sleuth, Zulu, Get Carter, Man Who Would be King, Italian Job and the Harry Palmer films.

I did enjoy his recent 'Death Wish in South London' movie Harry Brown.

Dark Knight his only no.1 film of the year? hmmm not a big fan of the Chris Nolan Batman films I much prefer the more gothic Tim Burton films. But Caine is good in them, it is a little sad seeing him play a butler but he is getting on a bit.

Okay I've seen 9 of the top 10 box office and all 10 on the critics chart.

Well done updating this hub on one of Britains most popular actors.

Voted Up and Useful.

I knew I had seen many Michael Caine movies, no idea the number was so high...usually when I get down to the bottom of these lists there are many movies I have not seen...not so for Mr. Caine as I have seen movies #67 to #80.

Caine is almost 80 and he is still going strong....he has 4 movies in production currently...so I think he has a chance to get another Oscar nomination.

Did you know he and Jack Nicholson are the only people to get Oscar nominations in 5 straight decades. 1960's Alfie, 1970s Sleuth, 1980s Educating Rita and Hannah and Her Sisters, 1990s Cider House Rules and 2000s The Quiet American....I wonder if either one of them will get one in the 2010s.

I thought Harry Brown was pretty good....with a nice ending that can be debated if he lived or not....thanks for checking out the update....and I am sure Sir Michael forgives you letting an American beat you in the tally count...lol.

I am going over how many of his films I've seen...already discussed my favourites:

Top ten box office: I have seen 6 of these, numbers 5,6,7,8,9, and 10

Top ten critics: I have only seen 4 of these: 2,5,8, and 10

Top 10 movie score: I have seen 4: 4, 6, 7 and 10

Overall:

I have seen 19 movies or 24%. The films of his I have seen I have seen multiple times. The lowest number on the list I've seen is 55, Noises Off, so it is not like I've only seen his best films even though the bottom 30% of his films I haven't seen. The most recently made film I've seen is Miss Congeniality of 2000. The earliest film I've seen is The Ipcress file of 1965.

Hey Flora 19 is not too bad....I might be on the top of this tally count...but my next new hub(Fred Astaire) I have a grand total of 1 movie that I have seen....so I feel confident I will be in last place when that one comes out. I always thought Michael Caine and my dad looked very much alike....which is one reason I have seen so many of his movies. Thanks as always for stopping by.

FloraBreenRobison profile image

As a singer on the soundtrack, Astaire has made many more movies than in which he appeared as an actor. I haven't seen all of his late career movies or television career, but unless I am very much mistaken, if there are any films of his from the studio system era I've missed it is only because I can't find it. In fact, with the exception of *one* Astaire/Rodgers film, I have seen every big screen musical he ever made, no matter how small the part or what year it was released.
