Matthew McConaughey Movies-Best to Worst-From Dazed and Confused to The Lincoln Lawyer.
74Matthew McConaughey plays coach Jack Lengyel in 2006's We Are Marshall....which tells the story of the Marshall football program after a tragic plane crash.
As I was working on my latest hub, Best Box Office Movies of 1946, and I got into a conversation about my latest hub subject with one of my children. When I told her my latest subject I could tell she had no interest what so ever in movies made 48 years before she was born. So figuring she has to represent a decent percentage of my followers that has that same opinion so I figured I would publish a current hub to go with my 1946 hub. So I grabbed my handy dandy movie notebook and checked out some of my requests over the last 9 months. So the winner from the requests was Mr. Matthew McConaughey.
Matthew McConaughey is an American actor who began his acting career in 1991. After appearing in supporting roles in movies like 1993's Dazed and Confused, 1994's Angels in the Outfield and 1996's Lone Star, he got his first big break by getting the lead role in 1996's A Time To Kill. Since the success of A Time To Kill, McConaughey has become one of the more recognizable leading men working in movies today. He has appeared in romantic comedies, action films, dramas and even some horror films. I did not think I was the biggest fan of his, but looking at his movie roles I have seen 17 of his movies or 63% of his movies. So it seems like I must be a bigger fan than I thought. I would easily say that my favorite two movies of his are Reign of Fire and We Are Marshall. The following hub will rank his movies three ways....1. Rank by his biggest box office hits.....2. Rank by his best rated movies according to critics and audiences.....3. Rank all of his movies by Movie Score which combines parts 1 and 2 and looks at award recognition as well.
Matthew McConaughey and Samuel L. Jackson in 1996's A Time To Kill....his #1 box office hit with 195.60 million in 2011 dollars.

I remember during all the publicity surrounding A Time To Kill, there were many movie articles talking about how Matthew McConaughey was the new Paul Newman. So I figure it would be interesting to compare their careers. Since McConaughey has appeared in 27 movies, I decided to split his career into 3 equal parts of 9 movies. I then did the same thing to the first 27 movies of Paul Newman's career. The following table has the results.

Paul Newman wins every category...so I am thinking Matthew McConaughey has little ways to go before he will become the next Paul Newman.

Happy 42nd Birthday Matthew 11/4/11 ... What an honor for cogerson to create a hub for you on your special day! I hope you appreciate it, I know I do! I've admired you BUT also your acting abilities for a few years now. You are multi-talented and whether you are playing a football coach, a stud in a chick flick or a legal eagle you manage to rock your role! You are a lucky dude being able to star in movies along with Hollywood hotties Sandra Bullock, Kate Hudson and Sarah Jessica Parker OR maybe they were the lucky dudettes! Either way I've seen most of your movies but I gotta tell you Lincoln Lawyer, Failure To Launch and A Time To Kill are my favorites. I would have also said Sahara but i'm not a fan of Penelope Cruz, I was glad when you broke up...not to be mean but I knew you could do so much better! Looking forward to your next marvelous movie. I do have one complaint though....I have a few friends who complained that in Lincoln Lawyer you never removed your shirt, they (ok, we) would appreciate more skin next time around. Thanks for the memories Matthew! Cya soon!
Not one of my favourites but I did like some of his films.
A Time to Kill, Contact, Tropic Thunder, U-571, Amistad, Sahara and Reign of Fire I've bought on DVD.
If I had to pick one film from that lot it would be Contact, a very good SF film with an excellent performance by Jodie Foster.
Overall I've seen 9 of the films you've listed, have to admit I've never seen Dazed and Confused.
Voted Up and Interesting.
Wow, I've seen more of M.M.'s films than I thought. My fave is probably "A Time To Kill," that is simply a great film all around.
He's done some turkeys though. I hear McConaughey doesn't even like to talk about the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" flick he was in. Haha.
Well, another good HUB. I really liked the movie A Time To Kill. It was a good story and good acting from all the actors. It was recently on TV and I watched it again. I have seen many of his movies - waited for U571 and was somewhat disappointed in it. THANKS FOR THE HUB COGERSON.
Yes it's really his birthday! Perfect timing for this hub!! I like when Marisa Tomei takes her shirt off too!! lol
I am a fan of McConaughey. I love We Are Marshall. I admittedly watch some of the "chick flicks" quite often, so I did like How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days, but I'm a huge Kate Hudson fan. I also liked Two For The Money with Pacino. Of course, Dazed and Confused is a classic so you can't go wrong with that movie.
I knew it...I read celeb birthdays everyday in the newspaper. Actually Dave picked up on my hobby also so when I screeched that you did a hub on MM he said today is his bday!!! BTW 15 seconds without a shirt doesn't count.
You have picked a winner for this hub. I love Matthew he is very sexy and seems so nice. I think I have seen almost all of these movies plus some I do not see on the main list. Voted way up. And all this talk about him taking off his shirt makes me want to go and watch Fool's Gold again.
I reckon I could watch Fool's Gold again :)
Hello a Matthew McConaughey hub? I am having trouble here - he is light entertainment. Paul Newman's name will be known fifty years from now, is all I can say about that.
Mckbirdks, my daughters are in their 20's and if it wasn't for Paul Newman's salad dressing they would have no idea who he is. They've never seen his movies but they like his food line. They are aware of Matthew McConaughey as is my 5 year old granddaughter. Celebrities that are remembered change with each generation. Just my opinion :))
just a thought. Even before I ever saw I single movie I knew who Clark Gable was.A man who was born the same day I was 75 years earlier and who died 16 years before I was born. People are spending FAR too much time talking about how old actors are. I mean, the New Kids on the Block were popular when I was a teenager. They were harmless and very popular-the first concert I attended-, but I wouldn't dream of suggesting my generation of teen idols matches the musical *quality* of the British Invasion of the 60s - music that has indeed remained popular. If mike wants to point out that he thinks Mathew M. is a good lucker whose acting skills are light entertainment only while Paul Newman is a great actor, let him. Quite frankly, a lot of those classic actors want to be remembered for their charitable work, NOT their acting. Newman would much rather be remembered for all the work he did for charity. and he is remembered for charity. Not so William Holden, who wanted the first thing people to think of him being his animal santuary, not his acting. that is not the case.
Actors popular when I was a teenager--Charlie Sheen (!) Christian Slater (who?), Patrick swayze (dead) and Tom Cruise (still popular). The Brat Pack group were huge when I was a teenager. I wouldn't call most of them great actors, although I loved them at the time, and I am not offended when people roll their eyes when I say I was a huge fan of New Kids On The block.
Please lets not make these hubs of Cogerson's a one side vs. the other like the political hubs. Never mind calling people OLD who are likely either your own age or younger because they like quality regardless of the age-I watch Oscar films that come out now, but most of the films that come out now before September are not good. I am getting a bit frustrated by this thread. What is wrong with being old anyway?
I have a suggestion dfor people who don't like hubs about people who are dead, even if if they were old enough to have seen the films when they were released.
DO NOT READ THESE HUBS. And leave those of us who do read them alone.
rant finished. and no, I am tired. And I will not be following this hub anymore, even though it is likely my favourite movie year after 1939.
Sunshine625 I can top your story. My oldest daughter who at the time was in her late teens did not know who John Wayne was. I took it as a lack of proper training on my part. Have a good evening.
Flora I cannot tell by your comment if I have offended you. I hope not. Mr. Newman may also wish to be remembered as a race car driver, or author with his wife of a cookbook.
Mckbirdbks-no, It is not you who offended me. I am tired of being made to feel old for being interested in earlier generations and one hubber in particular is doing it even though she is old enough to be my mother. Well, I see I left my rant on the wrong hub. This was meant to be left on the 1946 hub not the Matthew hub-though my opinion is the same. I don't read hubs about actors I don't know or like. If I hadn't seen Mathew's film's I wouldn't have commented on this hub. I don't go on hubs of actors or writers I don't like as I do not want to read about them.
I remember Mathew More For Playing Loud Music While Playing Bongos In The Nude And Smoking Pot...They Say Keanu Reeves Has A Singular Acting Style,But Nothing Compared To Matthew.;)
Flora as a follow up, tht title is "Newman's Own Cookbook", 1985, :) try the Guacamole, pg 18. I hope everyone is curled up watching old movies.
Corgerson she completely floored me. I was speechless.
Mckbirdbks-I will have to look for that. I have Sophia loren's cookbook. And just ignore my rants as my blowing off steam to make me feel better. I just managed to screw up by getting confused where I was posting my rant. my family is basically in a waiting game for when Grandma dies and it is taking a lot out of us so that we are all tired and then I get on the hub and I feel like I can't escape the references to age. Ergo, the rant.
hmmm. Looking at your list of your 15 top hubs, there are only two I haven't commented on-Katherine Hepburn: not sure why I haven't yet. I prefer her dramas to her comedies;
and Christian Bale (pretty sure I haven't seen any of his.) I think I'm running out of your classic actor/director back hubs.
Yes, I did know that Olivia and Joan were still with us. I also know that they haven't always gotten along. Talking about my mention of Gable in an earlier comment, Olivia has outlived the actress who played Bonnie, Rhett and Scarlet's daughter. O'Hara is also still alive.
I'm familiar with all of these actresses. Two of them worked with Hitchcock (O'Hara and Fontaine).
O'hara was in Jamaica Inn in 1939 opposite Charles Laughton -the same year they were in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. J.I. was her third film.
Hi Cogerson; I really don't have much to say about Matthew McConaughey because I'm not really a big fan of any of his films. He never really registered with me in anything I've seen him in. I've got nothing againt him but I can take him or leave him. I'm neutral on this guy.
Rob
Just stopping by to visit with Matthew and pimp this hub a bit :))
Cogerson - I am glad Sunshine shared this! I haven't been getting my notifications again! I would have missed this hub! About Matt:). Now that - would have been criminal. I once called my hairdresser and said, "I'm sending my husband over - dont't send him back until you get him looking like Matt! Haven't seen him since.....
Anyhow - ! Lol. I loved him in so many of his movies - he is a great actor! Awesome up and everything! Personal thanks:-)! Lol
LOL to @Real's comment! I hope she finds her husband soon!
My friend tried to post a comment on here but she wasn't able to so here goes...."Your post on the hub about my boy Matthew shows up on my newsfeed and I go to post my comment on it but it wont let me. So here is my comment "I don't rate his movies on his acting skills. I watch Matthew movies just to look at him" Hubba Hubba"
Thank you Rogers, you made some wonderful women very happy! - Sunshine
Oh yeah.....I just read this one again.....I needed a breath of fresh air:)
I really did say that to my hair dresser - but Dave wouldn't go to a chick salon.....
I fort because I got all excited about so many things when I was reading it - A Time to Kill was my favorite serious movie and How to Lose a Guy my fav comedy. Can we make requests? I have one! Lol
Well it's a character I love but I'm not sure what her total history is and I'd love to see her in more - what about Frances Mcdormand? From Fargo? She just cracks me up! I'm not sure if she's played in a lot of movies but I do recall some good ones.
I LOVE Fargo
WHoa, comments are full of drama, craziness, but stimulating. I agree that Mr. Matthew is nowhere close to Paul Newman status. But I really do enjoy his movies and Reign of Fire is one of my favorites, crazy American with an axe, too funny. Well as for me I think I can appreciate what the "older" actors have done, but I still like to keep up with the current ones. Hey are you going to have to adjust your inflated 2011 box office when 2012 comes around?
Bryan-Oh, I'm always full of drama. Comes from being the daughter of retired professional musicians. Artists are dramatic people.
Lol, drama is where its at. Keeps me entertained. I agree about the guy from Bladerunner. The adjusted box offices may be a handful, but I am sure you will enjoy it.
congrats, this is on facebook now to.

Films I've seen of Mathew's career mostly fall into the category of I was with a group of people. However, I saw Dazed and Confused after becoming a fan of CSI:Miami and Rory Cochrane (of course he was killed off the show which has become weird-I only watch the original CSI now.) Cochrane had a big role in the film. I think that is the only film I actually did seek out
Other films I've seen in alphabetical order:
Amistad
How To lose A Guy in 10 days..a rather mean-spirited thought behind this film although I enjoyed them singing the Carly Simon while Newman- NOT the composer-played for them.
That's it.
He is pretty, though.
