As I was working on my latest hub, Best Box Office Movies of 1946, and I got into a conversation about my latest hub subject with one of my children. When I told her my latest subject I could tell she had no interest what so ever in movies made 48 years before she was born. So figuring she has to represent a decent percentage of my followers that has that same opinion so I figured I would publish a current hub to go with my 1946 hub. So I grabbed my handy dandy movie notebook and checked out some of my requests over the last 9 months. So the winner from the requests was Mr. Matthew McConaughey.

Matthew McConaughey is an American actor who began his acting career in 1991. After appearing in supporting roles in movies like 1993's Dazed and Confused, 1994's Angels in the Outfield and 1996's Lone Star, he got his first big break by getting the lead role in 1996's A Time To Kill. Since the success of A Time To Kill, McConaughey has become one of the more recognizable leading men working in movies today. He has appeared in romantic comedies, action films, dramas and even some horror films. I did not think I was the biggest fan of his, but looking at his movie roles I have seen 17 of his movies or 63% of his movies. So it seems like I must be a bigger fan than I thought. I would easily say that my favorite two movies of his are Reign of Fire and We Are Marshall. The following hub will rank his movies three ways....1. Rank by his biggest box office hits.....2. Rank by his best rated movies according to critics and audiences.....3. Rank all of his movies by Movie Score which combines parts 1 and 2 and looks at award recognition as well.

Matthew McConaughey and Samuel L. Jackson in 1996's A Time To Kill....his #1 box office hit with 195.60 million in 2011 dollars.

I remember during all the publicity surrounding A Time To Kill, there were many movie articles talking about how Matthew McConaughey was the new Paul Newman. So I figure it would be interesting to compare their careers. Since McConaughey has appeared in 27 movies, I decided to split his career into 3 equal parts of 9 movies. I then did the same thing to the first 27 movies of Paul Newman's career. The following table has the results.

Films I've seen of Mathew's career mostly fall into the category of I was with a group of people. However, I saw Dazed and Confused after becoming a fan of CSI:Miami and Rory Cochrane (of course he was killed off the show which has become weird-I only watch the original CSI now.) Cochrane had a big role in the film. I think that is the only film I actually did seek out

Other films I've seen in alphabetical order:

Amistad

How To lose A Guy in 10 days..a rather mean-spirited thought behind this film although I enjoyed them singing the Carly Simon while Newman- NOT the composer-played for them.

That's it.

He is pretty, though.

Happy 42nd Birthday Matthew 11/4/11 ... What an honor for cogerson to create a hub for you on your special day! I hope you appreciate it, I know I do! I've admired you BUT also your acting abilities for a few years now. You are multi-talented and whether you are playing a football coach, a stud in a chick flick or a legal eagle you manage to rock your role! You are a lucky dude being able to star in movies along with Hollywood hotties Sandra Bullock, Kate Hudson and Sarah Jessica Parker OR maybe they were the lucky dudettes! Either way I've seen most of your movies but I gotta tell you Lincoln Lawyer, Failure To Launch and A Time To Kill are my favorites. I would have also said Sahara but i'm not a fan of Penelope Cruz, I was glad when you broke up...not to be mean but I knew you could do so much better! Looking forward to your next marvelous movie. I do have one complaint though....I have a few friends who complained that in Lincoln Lawyer you never removed your shirt, they (ok, we) would appreciate more skin next time around. Thanks for the memories Matthew! Cya soon!

Not one of my favourites but I did like some of his films.

A Time to Kill, Contact, Tropic Thunder, U-571, Amistad, Sahara and Reign of Fire I've bought on DVD.

If I had to pick one film from that lot it would be Contact, a very good SF film with an excellent performance by Jodie Foster.

Overall I've seen 9 of the films you've listed, have to admit I've never seen Dazed and Confused.

Voted Up and Interesting.

Hey Flora...thanks for checking out one of my modern day hubs...I actually just saw Dazed and Confused about a week ago....I have not even gone and checked out IMDB yet to see where and if any of these young actors went anywhere....besides the big name actors in the movie. Even if you have only seen three of his movies...that still represents 11% of his movies that you have seen. Your opinion that he is pretty is shared by my wife as well. Thanks as always for your comments.

Hey Sunshine625...wow is it really his birthday today? I had no idea...but that is pretty cool. You have written a nice letter to Mr. McConaughey...maybe he will get depressed about his birthday and check out the internet to see if there is anything new about him...and he will find my hub and your letter...lol. I am looking forward to when I get the chance to watch The Lincoln Lawyer....as I like when Marisa Tomei takes her shirt off....I am not concerned when and if he takes his shirt off though....thanks for leaving such a nice comment....I am glad you liked this pulse hub.

Hey Steve thanks for checking out my McConaughey hub....I have spelled his last name so many times today that I think I have finally learned how to spell it correctly without double checking. If I had to guess I would have guessed that Contact would have been your favorite...surprised that you have not seen Dazed and Confused as I think it was your girl, Milla's first movie.

I like Reign of Fire as well...it makes no sense but watching Bale, McConaughey and Gerard Butler running around killing dragons has some good moments. U-571 is a great Blu-Ray...the scenes have great background detail...I use some of the scenes from that movie to show off our entertainment system. Amistad is one of the few Spielberg movies I have not watched....thanks for the comments.

Wow, I've seen more of M.M.'s films than I thought. My fave is probably "A Time To Kill," that is simply a great film all around.

He's done some turkeys though. I hear McConaughey doesn't even like to talk about the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" flick he was in. Haha.

Well, another good HUB. I really liked the movie A Time To Kill. It was a good story and good acting from all the actors. It was recently on TV and I watched it again. I have seen many of his movies - waited for U571 and was somewhat disappointed in it. THANKS FOR THE HUB COGERSON.

I am a fan of McConaughey. I love We Are Marshall. I admittedly watch some of the "chick flicks" quite often, so I did like How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days, but I'm a huge Kate Hudson fan. I also liked Two For The Money with Pacino. Of course, Dazed and Confused is a classic so you can't go wrong with that movie.

Hey FatFreddysCat....I am right there with you...I was amazed that I had seen so many of his movies...I also agree that A Time To Kill is easily his best movie....as for The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.....it is horrible...but not only do we get M.M. ..we get Renee Zellweger as well...I think both are ashamed of the movie...thanks for stopping by.

Mckbirdks, my daughters are in their 20's and if it wasn't for Paul Newman's salad dressing they would have no idea who he is. They've never seen his movies but they like his food line. They are aware of Matthew McConaughey as is my 5 year old granddaughter. Celebrities that are remembered change with each generation. Just my opinion :))

Hey mckbirdbks.....when I looked at my request notebook...Mr. McConaughey had three requests over the last few months.....so he might be light entertainment....but he is a very popular light entertainment. As for his comparison to Paul Newman...I think the numbers prove that he is not even close...but Newman is one of the greatest actors ever...so the bar was set very high....thanks for the comments and thanks for stopping by....and congrats again on your outstanding interview in this week's newsletter.

Hey Sunshine625...yep Fool's Gold is a good movie to watch as the weather turns cold....I agree that the younger generation has no idea who Paul Newman is....my older son's only know him as the old guy from the Bruce Willis movie Nobody's Fool....which is in fact really a Paul Newman movie. You make a good point about actors that are remembered change with each generation....this generation might think in 20 years that Daniel Radcliffe and Robert Pattinson were the greatest actors ever...as always thanks for your comments.

FloraBreenRobison profile image

FloraBreenRobison 6 months ago

just a thought. Even before I ever saw I single movie I knew who Clark Gable was.A man who was born the same day I was 75 years earlier and who died 16 years before I was born. People are spending FAR too much time talking about how old actors are. I mean, the New Kids on the Block were popular when I was a teenager. They were harmless and very popular-the first concert I attended-, but I wouldn't dream of suggesting my generation of teen idols matches the musical *quality* of the British Invasion of the 60s - music that has indeed remained popular. If mike wants to point out that he thinks Mathew M. is a good lucker whose acting skills are light entertainment only while Paul Newman is a great actor, let him. Quite frankly, a lot of those classic actors want to be remembered for their charitable work, NOT their acting. Newman would much rather be remembered for all the work he did for charity. and he is remembered for charity. Not so William Holden, who wanted the first thing people to think of him being his animal santuary, not his acting. that is not the case.

Actors popular when I was a teenager--Charlie Sheen (!) Christian Slater (who?), Patrick swayze (dead) and Tom Cruise (still popular). The Brat Pack group were huge when I was a teenager. I wouldn't call most of them great actors, although I loved them at the time, and I am not offended when people roll their eyes when I say I was a huge fan of New Kids On The block.

Please lets not make these hubs of Cogerson's a one side vs. the other like the political hubs. Never mind calling people OLD who are likely either your own age or younger because they like quality regardless of the age-I watch Oscar films that come out now, but most of the films that come out now before September are not good. I am getting a bit frustrated by this thread. What is wrong with being old anyway?

I have a suggestion dfor people who don't like hubs about people who are dead, even if if they were old enough to have seen the films when they were released.

DO NOT READ THESE HUBS. And leave those of us who do read them alone.

rant finished. and no, I am tired. And I will not be following this hub anymore, even though it is likely my favourite movie year after 1939.

Sunshine625 I can top your story. My oldest daughter who at the time was in her late teens did not know who John Wayne was. I took it as a lack of proper training on my part. Have a good evening.

Flora I cannot tell by your comment if I have offended you. I hope not. Mr. Newman may also wish to be remembered as a race car driver, or author with his wife of a cookbook.

FloraBreenRobison profile image

FloraBreenRobison 6 months ago

Mckbirdbks-no, It is not you who offended me. I am tired of being made to feel old for being interested in earlier generations and one hubber in particular is doing it even though she is old enough to be my mother. Well, I see I left my rant on the wrong hub. This was meant to be left on the 1946 hub not the Matthew hub-though my opinion is the same. I don't read hubs about actors I don't know or like. If I hadn't seen Mathew's film's I wouldn't have commented on this hub. I don't go on hubs of actors or writers I don't like as I do not want to read about them.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 6 months ago

Hey Flora...sorry that this hub/thread has gotten you so upset. I think most people make that decision about which hubs to read and which ones to avoid. So I generally try and rotate between classic actors and current actors...I think it is safe that you and I have the movie bug so we are interested in lots of information about movies...especially from the history side of the movie industry.

I think from the HubPages side of things....it has surprisingly turned out that my classic hubs(notice I am not saying dead people) are more popular than my current actors....Looking at my Top Hubs.

#1 Bruce Willis....he is my first hub...and I really pushed that hub

#2 James Stewart...classic actor

#3 Christian Bale....but only ranks 47th when looking at last 30 days

#4 Michael Caine....not sure where he falls in a classification

#5 Johnny Depp....current actor

#6 Marilyn Monroe...classic actress

#7 Katharine Hepburn...classic actress

#8 John Wayne....classic actor

#9 Cary Grant....classic actor

#10 Sean Connery..

#11 Alfred Hitchcock...classic actor

#12 Doris Day....classic actress

#13 Audrey Hepburn...classic actress

#14 Gregory Peck...classic actor

#15 Jack Nicholson...not classic but not too current

So looking at the Top 15 most came form the classic era some I have decided to concentrate more on those hubs...while not forgetting about the current ones.

Well you might be running out of my classic hubs...but do not worry...my mother and mother-in-law were over the house this weekend...and they made a ton of suggestions...as well as complaining that I do not have enough women actress hubs....some of their suggestions...Bette Davis, Lana Turner, Elizabeth Taylor, Maureen O'Hara, Susan Hayward, Joan Crawford, Oliva de Havilland and her sister Joan Fontaine...do you know that both Oliva and Joan are still around and in their 90s?

FloraBreenRobison profile image

Yes, I did know that Olivia and Joan were still with us. I also know that they haven't always gotten along. Talking about my mention of Gable in an earlier comment, Olivia has outlived the actress who played Bonnie, Rhett and Scarlet's daughter. O'Hara is also still alive.

I'm familiar with all of these actresses. Two of them worked with Hitchcock (O'Hara and Fontaine).

Hey Flora....they are now in the ever growing request list...so they will be coming to a hub near you soon....I really need to research Maureen O'Hara's career, I have no idea which Hitchcock movie she was in....I know she made a ton of movies with John Wayne and she was funny in John Candy movie....lots more to learn...lol. My mom and mother-in-law mentioned that the two sisters do not even speak....that is just sad...thanks for the comments.

O'hara was in Jamaica Inn in 1939 opposite Charles Laughton -the same year they were in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. J.I. was her third film.

Hi Cogerson; I really don't have much to say about Matthew McConaughey because I'm not really a big fan of any of his films. He never really registered with me in anything I've seen him in. I've got nothing againt him but I can take him or leave him. I'm neutral on this guy.

Just stopping by to visit with Matthew and pimp this hub a bit :))

Hey Flora thanks for the information....I just checked out her IMDB stats....she actually did not make that many movies especially when you consider how long Maureen O' Hara's career was...but some of the movies are classics like Miracle on 34th Street and The Quiet Man. Interesting that Hitchcock noticed her very early in her career.

Hey Rob...well I appreciate you taking the time to check out a hub on an actor you are not much of a fan of their work. I think I am pretty neutral on him as well...thanks for the comments.

I once called my hairdresser and said, "I'm sending my husband over - dont't send him back until you get him looking like Matt! Haven't seen him since.....

Anyhow - ! Lol. I loved him in so many of his movies - he is a great actor! Awesome up and everything! Personal thanks:-)! Lol

LOL to @Real's comment! I hope she finds her husband soon!

My friend tried to post a comment on here but she wasn't able to so here goes...."Your post on the hub about my boy Matthew shows up on my newsfeed and I go to post my comment on it but it wont let me. So here is my comment "I don't rate his movies on his acting skills. I watch Matthew movies just to look at him" Hubba Hubba"

Thank you Rogers, you made some wonderful women very happy! - Sunshine

I really did say that to my hair dresser - but Dave wouldn't go to a chick salon.....

I fort because I got all excited about so many things when I was reading it - A Time to Kill was my favorite serious movie and How to Lose a Guy my fav comedy. Can we make requests? I have one! Lol

Cogerson Hub Author 6 months ago

Hey RealHousewife...that is a funny story/line about your husband and your hair dresser...I showed it to my wife and we both got a big laugh out of that one.....I assume the look you wanted was not the one from Reign on Fire(see photo above)...I can almost manage that one....lol.

Thanks for the compliments and I am glad you enjoyed my Matthew McCongauhey hub.

As for request....absolutely....and your request will go straight to the top of the list...so fire away.

Well it's a character I love but I'm not sure what her total history is and I'd love to see her in more - what about Frances Mcdormand? From Fargo? She just cracks me up! I'm not sure if she's played in a lot of movies but I do recall some good ones.

Consider it done...I will make that the next one I do...so I guess we will find out together about her movie career...I do know she is married to one of the Coen brothers...and they helped her win her Oscar many years ago. Thanks for the suggestion.

I LOVE Fargo

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 6 months ago

Hey Flora...I love Fargo...and I am almost 100% sure it will be her number one movie when I find all the information on her movies....I remember when I saw Fargo the first time it was during the 1996 Oscars....I have boycotted the Oscar show two times in my life....I boycotted that year because I was so upset that they nominated Babe(the talking pig movie) for some many Oscars including a Best Picture nomination...so I decided to skip the show and go to the movies....anyway...I found it to be a great movie then and still do now.

WHoa, comments are full of drama, craziness, but stimulating. I agree that Mr. Matthew is nowhere close to Paul Newman status. But I really do enjoy his movies and Reign of Fire is one of my favorites, crazy American with an axe, too funny. Well as for me I think I can appreciate what the "older" actors have done, but I still like to keep up with the current ones. Hey are you going to have to adjust your inflated 2011 box office when 2012 comes around?

FloraBreenRobison profile image

Bryan-Oh, I'm always full of drama. Comes from being the daughter of retired professional musicians. Artists are dramatic people.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 6 months ago

Hey Bryan...well it is a movie hub...you have to expect some drama every now and then....as for Matthew McConaughey being compared to Newman...that comparison was during the press for A Time To Kill...I have not heard ever again....but I remember the comment....so we still look for the new Newman. I always thought Rutger Hauer(Bladerunner/Hobo With A Shotgun) looked liked Newman. Thanks for your thoughts on the classic actors and the current actors...I will keep both coming. I will update to 2012 adjusted gross when the average ticket price for the year comes out...last year it came out in mid-January...talk about lots of work to update all of these hubs. Thanks for the comments...and once again...Happy Veteran's Day....grandma told me you had the whole day mapped out to get free food....you have earned that...and remember no matter how cold it gets in Alaska it is much better than how hot you got in Baghdad.

Hey Flora....well I like dramatic people....so you can cause drama on any of my hubs...and I will always be greatly appreciative.

Lol, drama is where its at. Keeps me entertained. I agree about the guy from Bladerunner. The adjusted box offices may be a handful, but I am sure you will enjoy it.

Thanks for the support BryRog57. Luckily Debbie's computer skills will come in handy when 2011 average ticket prices are calculated. I am glad you see my point about Hauer and Newman.
