Johnny Depp started out his movie career playing secondary parts in movies likeand Nightmare on Elm Street and Platoon. He then turned to television where he gained notoriety when he played Officer Tom Hanson on the television series 21 Jump Street from 1987 to 1990. He left the series for a return to the big screen. In 1990 he had two movies released....John Water's Cry Baby and Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands. Scissorhands was the first of many collaborations between Tim Burton and Depp. For the next 15 years Depp, built a solid reputation for making quality movies with limited box office. That all changed when Depp took on the part of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbeanmovies. Pirates was a monster hit and turned Depp into one of the biggest movie stars making movies today.
Johnny Depp in 2006's Pirates 2: Dead Man's Chest....his biggest box office hit with 511.20 million in 2011 dollars.

Movie Score card for Johnny Depp's #2 movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Possibly Interesting Facts About Johnny Depp.
1. Johnny Depp has been nominated three times for an Oscar® for Best Actor...those roles were in the following movies...2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, 2004's Finding Neverland and 2007's Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
2. Johnny Depp has received 10 Golden Globe® nominations. He won the Golden Globe for Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
3. Johnny Depp and director Tim Burton have made 8 movies together. The first was 1990's Edward Scissorhands and the last one comes out next year and is called Dark Shadows.
4. Johnny Depp was married to Lori Anne Allison from 1983 to 1985. Depp current lives with French singer-actress Vanessa Paradis, they have two children....a boy named Jack and a girl named Lily-Rose.
5. Johnny Depp became great friends with the writer Hunter S. Thompson after playing Hunter in 1998's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. 13 years later he would play Hunter again in the 2011 movie The Rum Diary.
6. Speaking of Hunter S. Thompson one of Johnny Depp's greatest regrets deals with Thompson. One day Depp found an message on his answering machine...it was from Hunter S. Thompson..and it started to ramble on and on so Depp, without listening to the whole message hit save and went to the next message...a couple days later he heard Hunter S. Thompson killed himself...he went back to the answering machine, wanting to hear the message but the message was gone...Depp says he thinks daily about that message and how it ended.
7. After working with Marlon Brando in 1995's Don Juan DeMarco, Depp decided to follow Brando's advice and buy an island. The island he bough has 6 beaches and Depp named them after important people in his live. The beach names are Gonzo(Hunter S. Thompson's nickname), Paradis, Lily-Rose and Jack(his immediate family) and Brando. Makes you wonder what the 6th name is on that island.
8. Johnny Deep is one of 71 actors/actresses to receive a Cogerson career review hub page. My Greatest Actors/Actress Table has two separate tables....the first table ranks the 71 actors using all of their movies. Johnny Deep comes in at #36 on that table one spot behind of #35 Denzel Washington. The second table only looks at the actor's Top Ten Movie Score Movies. On that table Johnny Depp comes in at #43....just behind #42 James Cagney.

So what the heck are Movie Scores?
There are all kinds of ways to determine if you want to see or skip a movie. You can depend on your favorite critic. My favorites are Roger Ebert and Leonard Maltin. You might go to Rotten Tomatoes to get the consensus of all the critics. You might watch the viewer ratings at Yahoo Movies and IMDB. You might depend on which movies are doing the best at the box office. You might wait for the end of the year awards. Movie Score takes all of these options and creates a mathematical equation that generates a score from 1 to 100. The higher the score the better the movie.

Fear and Loathing is easy to understand...if you have done lots of drugs in your life
He is very talented and takes his roles very seriously.
Go Captain Jack.
Finding Neverland is my favorite
His Charlie and the Chocolate Factory definitely wasn't as good as the original...
Interesting idea
I had forgetten he was in the first Nightmare
Hey there. Cool list. I was reading the other day and saw he makes 235,000 an hour. That is crazy. Your a good writer. I have been to Fredericksburgh before. I live in WV. Glad to follow you neighbor
Interesting list. I love Johnny Depp movies especially Edward Scissorhands and Gilbert Grape. He is a very versatile actor and I'd like to see him drop the Pirate, a bit too much of that character for me.
I love Johnny Depp. My favorite are the Pirates of Caribbean movies. They are great.
I saw Rango this weekend, it is very funny, it is cool how it is already on this list. I will be watching to see where it ends up.
Johnny Depp is getting better with age, I am going to see rango this weeken, glad to see everybody loves that movie.
I might be in the minority but I did not like Rango, it was ok, but not a movie I will ever see again, hopefully Pirates 4 will be better.
My whole family loved Rango, hope it reaches your Top 5.
Your so called Movie Scores do not make alot of sense, you need better directions for me to understand. That being said, it looks like your list is pretty accurate
This is such an interesting list - a thorough compilation. Thanks for writing.
Yeah. Very cool and very informative. Love the ranking system and agree that Rango will gain momentum; the animation is brilliant!
Wow, I was amazed to see how high "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was, as I don't remember it being that good. Then again, you can't argue with the numbers. lol. Anyways, I guess you learn something new everyday, as it was interesting to see what films made the top ten in this list. Keep up the good work Cogerson!
Johnny even made Rango a Lizard HOT!!! Brilliant actor!!
Wow I am surprised Rango has passed so many of his movies. I guess I will have to check that one out.
I didnt know Johnny made bad movies, now I do! Voted Up!
Well thank you Cogerson, I am glad to see Depp is having a huge year, I read that he will be appearing briefly in 21 Jump Street as well. But back to your hub, I think Pirates IV, will land about #10. Voted up.
I loved the 4th Pirates, it was a great movie. Then again I love anything he is in. Nice Depp story.
I see my prediction looks like it is going to be close, Pirates is still raking in the money. Voted up
I really don't understand why so many people like Edward Scissorhands. My favorite Tim Burton remain's Beetlejuice. Depp has been in some great movies. The first pirate was the best the others confusing but still fun. The Dutch east trade company come across as the Evil Empire of the 17th? 18th? century. Which they apparently were, yet it seems odd rooting for pirates, the theives, murderers and rapists of the sea.
Not all pirates were as charming as Jack or pretty as Elisabeth and Will. haha.
I never did a chance to see Rum Diary this weekend. The reviews were so poor BUT hopefully next weekend. Gotta support Johnny! :)
"But why's the rum gone?"
My favourite line in Pirates of the Caribbean.
Hmmm I didn't know Depp made so many films, even more shocking is that I've seen most of them!
The top 10 is exactly how pictured it would be. :)
I liked Rango, bought it on blu-ray, it was different.
I thought Pirates 4 was routine and not on a par with the previous 3, made me appreciate Gore Verbinski's overblown trilogy more.
I haven't seen Edward Scissorhands in ages, I found it very sad and that tends to put me off rewatching some films. Very good film and Danny Elfman's score was perfect. And I think it was Vincent Price last film.
An enjoyable hub Bruce with some interesting bits of trivia.
Voted Up etc etc
Johhny Depp is one of the few current actors where I do consider myself a fan of the actor-but not enough that I will watch a bad film or a film totally not in the right genre for me (no Elm Street) I haven't seen everything he has done, but I've seen a lot more than most current actors, especially depending upon what genre the movies are.
However, I have only seen the first two Pirates of the Caribbean films. I don't know that I'll see any more of them, because I find the more sequels there are, thee more dissatisfied I am with them.
Top ten box office:
I have seen 5 of these: #1,2,7,9, and 10.
Top 10 critic scores:
I have seen 4 of these movies: 1,2,8 and 10.
note: I have seen Sweeny Todd in Vancouver (the stage musical) and loved it, and judging from the reviews it got, this was changed a lot so I didn't see the movie.
Top ten movie scores:
I have seen four of them.
Overall, I have seen 10 of his films you list , a big percentage for me. I have also seen Platoon which you do not include. Include that, and I've seen 28% of his films-
like Steve, I find Edward Sissorhands too sad to watch often and is thus not one of my favourites.
My 5 top favourites are, alphabetically:
Chocolat-my overall favourite
Ed Wood-also sad what happened to Bela, but still a great tribute to the actor played by Landau
Finding Neverland
Pirates of the Caribbean-Curse of the Black Pearl
Sleepy Hollow
Johnny Depp....he's a cutey....actually he's hot, even to an old bag like me who could do him no harm!! lol My eldest son was just talking to me about "Rango," and telling me he had laughed harder than he has since he was a kid....Personally, I love Capt. Jack Sparrow! I also liked Sweeney and the really old one, Gilbert Grape. I was blown away by Leonardo in that one.....he was just a kid but a powerful actor already. Thanks Cogerson....another ACE hub!
I have no helpful comment except that I really enjoyed reading this, and I also enjoy Johnny's face. =)
hahahahahah...Cogerson, I'm proud of you too, but it's fpherj48. I know you'll believe me when I tell you that our friend Sunshine came right out and asked me to explain my name (she cracks me up) So I wrote and told her how I put it together...& she wrote back and said "Oh, I see, well I'm glad I know because I've been calling you, "EFFER" J...so now I sign my emails to her that way. She calls me her effer!

Well you have nothing to say about #' 13-16. Speaking of which Blow top 10 all day. And are you kidding me, Fear and Loathing is an outstanding portrayal of Hunter S. Thompsons book, can't wait for The Rum Diaries.
