Hub Update: Johnny Depp's latest movie has arrived in theaters. Depp stars in Tim Burton's Dark Shadows. Dark Shadows was the number two movie of the weekend behind the monster hit The Avengers. Dark Shadows earned 28.8 million for the weekend. Critics were not very kind to the movie(41% on RottenTomatoes.com) while audiences liked it slightly better with a 70% rating. Dark Shadows did not crack Johnny Depp's Top 10 box office or Top Ten critic/audience charts but did debut in 30th place on the Cogerson Movie Score chart. 05/13/2012.

Johnny Depp started out his movie career playing secondary parts in movies likeand Nightmare on Elm Street and Platoon. He then turned to television where he gained notoriety when he played Officer Tom Hanson on the television series 21 Jump Street from 1987 to 1990. He left the series for a return to the big screen. In 1990 he had two movies released....John Water's Cry Baby and Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands. Scissorhands was the first of many collaborations between Tim Burton and Depp. For the next 15 years Depp, built a solid reputation for making quality movies with limited box office. That all changed when Depp took on the part of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbeanmovies. Pirates was a monster hit and turned Depp into one of the biggest movie stars making movies today.

Johnny Depp in 2006's Pirates 2: Dead Man's Chest....his biggest box office hit with 511.20 million in 2011 dollars.

Movie Score card for Johnny Depp's #2 movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Possibly Interesting Facts About Johnny Depp.

1. Johnny Depp has been nominated three times for an Oscar® for Best Actor...those roles were in the following movies...2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, 2004's Finding Neverland and 2007's Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

2. Johnny Depp has received 10 Golden Globe® nominations. He won the Golden Globe for Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

3. Johnny Depp and director Tim Burton have made 8 movies together. The first was 1990's Edward Scissorhands and the last one comes out next year and is called Dark Shadows.

4. Johnny Depp was married to Lori Anne Allison from 1983 to 1985. Depp current lives with French singer-actress Vanessa Paradis, they have two children....a boy named Jack and a girl named Lily-Rose.

5. Johnny Depp became great friends with the writer Hunter S. Thompson after playing Hunter in 1998's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. 13 years later he would play Hunter again in the 2011 movie The Rum Diary.

6. Speaking of Hunter S. Thompson one of Johnny Depp's greatest regrets deals with Thompson. One day Depp found an message on his answering machine...it was from Hunter S. Thompson..and it started to ramble on and on so Depp, without listening to the whole message hit save and went to the next message...a couple days later he heard Hunter S. Thompson killed himself...he went back to the answering machine, wanting to hear the message but the message was gone...Depp says he thinks daily about that message and how it ended.

7. After working with Marlon Brando in 1995's Don Juan DeMarco, Depp decided to follow Brando's advice and buy an island. The island he bough has 6 beaches and Depp named them after important people in his live. The beach names are Gonzo(Hunter S. Thompson's nickname), Paradis, Lily-Rose and Jack(his immediate family) and Brando. Makes you wonder what the 6th name is on that island.

8. Johnny Deep is one of 71 actors/actresses to receive a Cogerson career review hub page. My Greatest Actors/Actress Table has two separate tables....the first table ranks the 71 actors using all of their movies. Johnny Deep comes in at #36 on that table one spot behind of #35 Denzel Washington. The second table only looks at the actor's Top Ten Movie Score Movies. On that table Johnny Depp comes in at #43....just behind #42 James Cagney.

9. Not an interesting fact but check out this fun fan letter from fellow hubber Sunshine625 to Johnny Depp......Sunshine625 sends Johnny Depp a fan letter

So what the heck are Movie Scores?

There are all kinds of ways to determine if you want to see or skip a movie. You can depend on your favorite critic. My favorites are Roger Ebert and Leonard Maltin. You might go to Rotten Tomatoes to get the consensus of all the critics. You might watch the viewer ratings at Yahoo Movies and IMDB. You might depend on which movies are doing the best at the box office. You might wait for the end of the year awards. Movie Score takes all of these options and creates a mathematical equation that generates a score from 1 to 100. The higher the score the better the movie.

Interesting list. I love Johnny Depp movies especially Edward Scissorhands and Gilbert Grape. He is a very versatile actor and I'd like to see him drop the Pirate, a bit too much of that character for me.

I agree Dolores....I think Pirates ran out of steam after the 2nd film.....but I think you can look forward to three more Pirate movies....the first one comes out this summer....and then they want to make two more.....after they get through counting all the movie this summer....I love What's Eating Gilbert Grape too

I really don't understand why so many people like Edward Scissorhands. My favorite Tim Burton remain's Beetlejuice. Depp has been in some great movies. The first pirate was the best the others confusing but still fun. The Dutch east trade company come across as the Evil Empire of the 17th? 18th? century. Which they apparently were, yet it seems odd rooting for pirates, the theives, murderers and rapists of the sea.

Not all pirates were as charming as Jack or pretty as Elisabeth and Will. haha.

Hey ruffridyer....I know my oldest daughter(17 years old) thinks Edward Scissorhands is the best movie ever made....my favorite Tim Burton movies is Big Fish.....as for Pirates they hit the bullseye with the first one.....and they have tried to do top the first one....and in my opinion have failed to recapture that magic...thanks for stopping by

"But why's the rum gone?"

My favourite line in Pirates of the Caribbean.

Hmmm I didn't know Depp made so many films, even more shocking is that I've seen most of them!

The top 10 is exactly how pictured it would be. :)

I liked Rango, bought it on blu-ray, it was different.

I thought Pirates 4 was routine and not on a par with the previous 3, made me appreciate Gore Verbinski's overblown trilogy more.

I haven't seen Edward Scissorhands in ages, I found it very sad and that tends to put me off rewatching some films. Very good film and Danny Elfman's score was perfect. And I think it was Vincent Price last film.

An enjoyable hub Bruce with some interesting bits of trivia.

Voted Up etc etc

Hey SteveLensman.....well looking at his list I have seen 31 of his 38 movies...or 82% of his movies....not too bad of a number...especially since I do not feel I am a huge Johnny Depp fan.

"But why's the rum gone?" is a great line....my oldest daughter was a huge Pirates fan...and that was one of her favorite lines as well. One of the movies I have not watched of his is The Libertine....it is one of the few movies in my entire life that I turned the movie off and never watched the end...and so far I have not regreted that decision once.

Vincent Price's last movie was Edward Scissorhands...and agree it is a good movie...but sad is a great way to describe it.....thanks for checking out this facelifted hub.

Johhny Depp is one of the few current actors where I do consider myself a fan of the actor-but not enough that I will watch a bad film or a film totally not in the right genre for me (no Elm Street) I haven't seen everything he has done, but I've seen a lot more than most current actors, especially depending upon what genre the movies are.

However, I have only seen the first two Pirates of the Caribbean films. I don't know that I'll see any more of them, because I find the more sequels there are, thee more dissatisfied I am with them.

Top ten box office:

I have seen 5 of these: #1,2,7,9, and 10.

Top 10 critic scores:

I have seen 4 of these movies: 1,2,8 and 10.

note: I have seen Sweeny Todd in Vancouver (the stage musical) and loved it, and judging from the reviews it got, this was changed a lot so I didn't see the movie.

Top ten movie scores:

I have seen four of them.

Overall, I have seen 10 of his films you list , a big percentage for me. I have also seen Platoon which you do not include. Include that, and I've seen 28% of his films-

like Steve, I find Edward Sissorhands too sad to watch often and is thus not one of my favourites.

My 5 top favourites are, alphabetically:

Chocolat-my overall favourite

Ed Wood-also sad what happened to Bela, but still a great tribute to the actor played by Landau

Finding Neverland

Pirates of the Caribbean-Curse of the Black Pearl

Sleepy Hollow

I am there with you about Pirates...I loved The Curse of the Black Pearl, thought Dead Man's Chest was ok....and really disappointed with At World's End...so disappointed that I refuse to watch the fourth...and the fifth and sixth ones that are coming.

As for Sweeney Todd...I never knew it was a stage musical until I saw Jersey Girl about a year ago...and in that movie the little girl does Sweeney Todd as a school play....I learn stuff everyday....glad to hear the show you saw was excellent.

I agree with your Top 5....especially Ed Wood,Finding Neverland and Black Pearl...can't even think of a movie you should watch that you have not seen yet....thanks as always for visiting.

Hey fpher48....thanks for checking out my new and improved Johnny Depp hub....I feel proud I was able to spell your name without checking to see if I made a mistake...the first dozen or so times I spelled your name I made some really bad mistakes.

I can watch him in Pirates 1: The Curse of the Black Pearl over and over....not as big a fan of the later ones...Rango is very funny...the perfect combination of humor for both adults and children...as my 5 year old loves the movie as well. Leo is awesome in What's Eating Gilbert Grape...he overshadows Depp in that movie...maybe they will make another together sometime in the future....thanks for the comments and the compliment.

I have no helpful comment except that I really enjoyed reading this, and I also enjoy Johnny's face. =)

hahahahahah...Cogerson, I'm proud of you too, but it's fpherj48. I know you'll believe me when I tell you that our friend Sunshine came right out and asked me to explain my name (she cracks me up) So I wrote and told her how I put it together...& she wrote back and said "Oh, I see, well I'm glad I know because I've been calling you, "EFFER" J...so now I sign my emails to her that way. She calls me her effer!

Hey fpherj48....wow there I was patting myself on the back and I forgot the "j" in your name.....well I feel I will never forget the "j" again. Sunshine625 cracks me up as well....I can not figure out where she finds the time to be everywhere on HubPages, twitter, facebook and still take care of her family. I think effer and fpherj48 are both cool names.
