How True Grit earned enough points to be ranked as the number one Jeff Bridges movie.
Five More Possibly Interesting Facts.
1. (For BERN1960) Jeff Bridges has been married one time. In 1977 he married Susan Geston. They have three daughters: Isabelle, Jessica and Hayley.
2. Jeff Bridges is also a singer, cartoonist and photographer. His debut musical album was called Be Here Soon and was released on August 15th 2011. Be Here Soon debuted on Billboard's 200 in the 25th position. His cartoon artwork can be seen in the movies K-Pax and The Door in the Floor. His photography is mostly taken on film sets and can be seen on his excellent website....http://www.jeffbridges.com/
3. Premiere Magazine ranked his performance as "The Dude" in 1998's The Big Lebowski as the 90th Greatest Performance of All Time. Not too bad for a film that was quickly dismissed when it was first released. Time however, has been very kind to "The Dude" and The Big Lebowski as it has earned classic status over the last fourteen years.
4. Seven times Jeff Bridges has played a character named "Jack". His personal favorite movies are 1993's American Heart and 1993's Fearless.
5. Jeff Bridges is the 79th actors/actresses to receive a Cogerson career review hub page. My Greatest Actors/Actress Table has two separate tables....the first table ranks the 79 actors using all of their movies. Jeff Bridges with an average Movie Score of 32.13 comes in at #72 on that table one spot ahead of #73 James Caan. The second table only looks at the actor's Top Ten Movie Score Movies. On that table Jeff Bridges with an average Top Ten Movie Score of 61.20 comes in at #49 one spot ahead of #50 Fred Astaire.
Jeff, Lloyd and Beau Bridges...a combined 477 acting credits.
It is kind of hard to talk about Jeff Bridges without mentioning his father, Lloyd, and his brother, Beau. Lloyd Bridges was a contract performer at Columbia Pictures. He appeared in the classic movies A Walk In The Sun, High Noon, and Sahara. In the 1960s he gained more fame starring in the 1960's television series Sea Hunt. Later in his career he turned to comedic spoof roles in the movies like Airplane and Hot Shots. Seinfeld fans will remember him as Izzy Mandelbaum in season nine. Lloyd Bridges passed away in 1998.
Beau Bridges first started appearing in movies all the way back in 1949 in the movie The Red Pony. Beau has appeared in many television shows and movies. During his television career he has earned 14 Emmy® award nominations with 3 wins. His most famous movie roles would be The Fabulous Baker Boys, Heart Like A Wheel, Norma Rae and Jerry Maguire.

Interesting article. Watching "Tron" right now. ;-) Voted up.
Glad to see the first of the Bridge family hubs is up with all mentioned. I would love to see Lloyd get his own hub. He was nominated for High Noon and then had trouble with the House Unamerican Committee.
I am a big fan of Lloyd.
My favourite films of Jeff's are alphabetically,
The Fabulous Baker boys
The Fisher King
The Last Picture Show
Seabiscuit
Thunderbolt and Lightningfoot
The movie I am most looking forward to seeing: The Men who stared At Goats.
A movie I saw which I hated..really bad except for the fabulous title song...Against all Odds. Apparently it is a remake of a film I have seen (a 5 star film) but I did not see the resemblance. Both had Richard Widmark in them.
A film I am deliberately avoiding: Heaven's Gate. I am shocked that both this movie and Against all Odds were as high as they were. Audiences must have had high hopes for them before they actually saw the films because both are rated low on imdb.
Films I have seen:
Top Ten Box Office: I have seen 5 of them. These are #1, 5, 6, 9, and 10. I know that you are surprised I saw Iron Man and you are right to be surprised I saw a comic book film. I was with a group of people..fans of Downey, and hey, I have seen a lot of his films.
Top Ten Critics: I have seen only 4 of these: #1, 2, 7 and 10.
Top Ten Movie Score: I have seen 5 of these - #2,3,4,8,9
Overall, I have seen few films I have not yet already mentioned seeing. I have seen 13 of his films. 13 of 57 is 23%, much lower than my percentage for his father.
However, 12 of those 13 movies are in his top 20, despite my hating against all Odds. That is 60% of his top 20, quite high for me considering he is second generation Hollywood.
The other top 20 movie I have not mentioned seeing yet is The Mirror Has Two Faces.
The one movie lower than #20 I have seen? The Last American Hero at #39.
That should read *stare* at Goats, not past tense.
Okay, the comment section isn't working. I am trying to edit my comments for errors before the five minutes is up and I am not allowed to do so. I click on "Edit your Comment" and I am taken to the top of the page. This has been happening to me all day (Sunday).
I thought I had mentioned all 13 films I had seen in my first post , but I hadn't, so here they are in movie order:
Iron Man
The Last Picture Show
Seabiscuit
The Fisher King
Thunderbolt and luightfoot - which I see I listed as "lightningfoot"... and couldn't edit. sigh
Starman (odd..very odd)
Tron (don't ask)
K-Pax
The Mirror Has two Faces
The fabulous Baker Boys
Against All Odds
The Morning After
The Last American Hero
An excellent hub for an excellent actor Bruce, good work amigo.
True Grit numero uno on the moviescore eh? Well it almost nabbed Best Picture last year but was beaten off by The King's Stutter. I liked the new film but prefer the old John Wayne classic I grew up with, nostalgia rules!
Surprised to see the 1976 King Kong rated so highly, the critics were merciless but it did make money, it wasn't the flop people were saying it was. I bought it on DVD, twice. :)
There's a great King Kong quote I always mention when I see that title come up. The legendary Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis produced Kong and he was so sure it was going to break box office records, he was quoted as saying "When Jaws die no one cry, when my Kong die everyone cry!" :)
I've seen 23 of the 57 films on the main chart, more than I expected. 9 from the box office top 10, never seen Seabiscuit [cue gasps] and 6 from the critics top 10.
I saw Tron twice at the cinema in 1982 the dawning of the computer age in films, still enjoyable 30 years later and I've got a big hub lined up for it in the coming weeks. I liked the sequel too, stupendous visuals and sound and music but but the story just wasn't that great, it just felt flat and I saw it in 3D. ;)
Whoa Bridges was up for a lot of good films he turned down, thanks for the info Bruce.
I agree with Flora in that his dad deserves a hub too, but no rush.
Voted Up, useful and interesting.
I'm with you on The Big Lebowski. I had to watch it for a class my senior year of college and it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. So after that fiasco, I ended up dropping the class because the movie and the professor became insufferable.
My favorite movie he has been in that I've seen has to be Iron Man. I thought I had seen more of his films but unfortunately I'm severely behind. Hopefully, I'll get to work on that.
I didn't know he turned down all of those movies but I think it's made his career all the more interesting for it. Great hub! Voted up and interesting.
I'm a fan of the Big Lebowski, that is an awesome movie!! Jeff is like a gift that keeps on giving...he's quiet yet packs a punch on screen. I haven't seen True Grit yet, I started to a couple of times but got distracted. Superb actor, superb hub!! Voted UP!
Wow! Great stats. Jeff Bridges is one of those actors who could so easily have falled into the background, but he has done a wonderful job of picking the right projects. I really love his work, and I found this hub to be very interesting. Thanks for posting!
Another great hub, Cogerson. My favourite of his movies are #1-Fisher King, #2 Last Picture Show, #3-Starman, #4-Seabiscuit. I haven't seen some of these movies but I actually went to the cinema to see King Kong in 1976 when it first came out and enjoyed it but have never seen it since. I haven't seen Big Lebowski either; opinion in the comments on this film seem split down the middle on that one, i will have to see it and find out what I think.
WOW, I HAD NOT REALIZED THAT HE HAS MADE THAT MANY MOVIES. I HAVE SEEN MOST OF THEM BUT NOT ALL. STARMAN WAS GOOD - A FACE HAS TWO MIRRORS WAS ON RECENTLY AND I CAUGHT THE LAST HALF OF THE MOVIE AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT AGAIN. I ENJOYED IRON MAN BUT HE PLAYED A GREEDY BAD GUY...I VOTED UP AND AWESOME. WAY TO GO COGERSON...KEEP ON...GREAT PHOTO OF BEAU, JEFF AND LLOYD.
I haven't seen The Contender or Crazy Heart, Bruce. I'll add them to my should see list. The Big Lebowski is a cult film, I own it but I'm not crazy about it. I like some of the dialogue and Bridges is always good value.
Starman is definitely worth seeing Bruce, I think it's the only time an actor playing an alien has been nominated for Best Actor?
Cogerson:
I had the pleasure of watching True Grit last night. It was a fantastic film, which was undoubtedly due to Mr. Bridges.
What a great coincidence that I happened upon your article today. It was very interesting and a fun read.
-Lilith
hmm. I thought Lloyd got a Golden Globe nomination. In any case, he got the best reviews of his career and was expected to make huge strides in his career. McCarthy put him on the list of reds. Walt Disney was on the list too.
The day that you do a George Clooney hub is the day that you run out of current actors who are A list stars.
as for King Kong 1976, why see a remake when the original is top notch?
I will look out for your recommendation.
All of those sound like interesting topics for your next hub. :)
Larry Parks... He was recently in the news again because his widow died last year...Betty Garrett.
I first saw Clooney on The Facts of Life.
Hi Bruce; At first, I didn't think too much of Jeff Bridges, when he was making films like "King Kong" and "Tron". But after he made "Tucker' and "the Baker Boys" he turned a corner for me. He's really gotten to be an excellent actor. "Crazyheart' and "True Grit" were both outstanding performances. He'll probably be mostly remembered as 'the Dude' but he's done a lot of impressive work over the years. He's much more talented than brother Beau, and arguably better than dad, too.
(I can't believe that weak 'King Kong' remake was in the top five.)
Another interesting, informative hub.

Cogerson, this looks like a Grand Slam of a Hub. You sure sparked a conversation with this one. I guess Jeff Bridges days of being an unsong hero are over. His praise is being song now. Right here, right now.
For some reason Cogerson, most of Jeff Bridges' movies have passed me by (perhaps I'd be more familiar with his work if he'd starred in those roles he was considered for but did not play (some he may have been rejected for, but the ones he chose to turn down - what was he thinking?!)
However, I am surprised, but pleased, to learn that 'Starman' - my favourite of those I have seen - got quite a high ranking, and that he got an Oscar nomination for it. It can't be all that easy to play someone who is alien in mannerism, yet looks entirely human.
Perhaps an interesting page for a modification of your scoring system to attempt to do would be to rate the acting families of Hollywood? Based on both the numbers of close blood relatives in the profession (both acting and maybe technical crafts such as directing) and their successes - I guess the three Bridges would come pretty high up the list, as would the Barrymores and Fondas among others.
Thanks for another interesting page.
Have to agree Cogerson. What with Walter and his son John and John's daughter Anjelica and son Danny, and their nephew Jack who apparently is also in the business - they could virtually fill the acting credits of a movie between them.
But several of them have also had directing credits, so they might argue over who gives the orders :-)
Pretty interesting list. Although I'm surprised that the remake of "King Kong" was ranked as high as it was considering everyone tells me how bad it was allegedly. Anyway, keep up the good work.
Cool Hub as always. Recently watched True Grit and Tron:Legacy and enjoyed them. Does Lloyd Bridgea play the godfather in the spoof Mafia? Are you a fan of the dude?
Very interesting. I love the Big Labowski and Blown Away. Its amazing how long he has been acting. great work.
Also I rather enjoyed Men who stare at goats. Shame to see it with a low movie score. Anyway you forgot to say wether or not you were a fan of The Dude?

Very interesting. I would have put "Seabiscuit" and "The Fisher King" ahead of the others. It's a matter of personal taste, I guess (when you aren't a pro critic!)
I like Jeff but didn't like The Dude. Just thought the humour in it was a bit stupid, I guess.
