How True Grit earned enough points to be ranked as the number one Jeff Bridges movie.

Source: Cogerson Data Base

Five More Possibly Interesting Facts.

1. (For BERN1960) Jeff Bridges has been married one time. In 1977 he married Susan Geston. They have three daughters: Isabelle, Jessica and Hayley.

2. Jeff Bridges is also a singer, cartoonist and photographer. His debut musical album was called Be Here Soon and was released on August 15th 2011. Be Here Soon debuted on Billboard's 200 in the 25th position. His cartoon artwork can be seen in the movies K-Pax and The Door in the Floor. His photography is mostly taken on film sets and can be seen on his excellent website....http://www.jeffbridges.com/

3. Premiere Magazine ranked his performance as "The Dude" in 1998's The Big Lebowski as the 90th Greatest Performance of All Time. Not too bad for a film that was quickly dismissed when it was first released. Time however, has been very kind to "The Dude" and The Big Lebowski as it has earned classic status over the last fourteen years.

4. Seven times Jeff Bridges has played a character named "Jack". His personal favorite movies are 1993's American Heart and 1993's Fearless.

5. Jeff Bridges is the 79th actors/actresses to receive a Cogerson career review hub page. My Greatest Actors/Actress Table has two separate tables....the first table ranks the 79 actors using all of their movies. Jeff Bridges with an average Movie Score of 32.13 comes in at #72 on that table one spot ahead of #73 James Caan. The second table only looks at the actor's Top Ten Movie Score Movies. On that table Jeff Bridges with an average Top Ten Movie Score of 61.20 comes in at #49 one spot ahead of #50 Fred Astaire.

Jeff, Lloyd and Beau Bridges...a combined 477 acting credits.

It is kind of hard to talk about Jeff Bridges without mentioning his father, Lloyd, and his brother, Beau. Lloyd Bridges was a contract performer at Columbia Pictures. He appeared in the classic movies A Walk In The Sun, High Noon, and Sahara. In the 1960s he gained more fame starring in the 1960's television series Sea Hunt. Later in his career he turned to comedic spoof roles in the movies like Airplane and Hot Shots. Seinfeld fans will remember him as Izzy Mandelbaum in season nine. Lloyd Bridges passed away in 1998.

Beau Bridges first started appearing in movies all the way back in 1949 in the movie The Red Pony. Beau has appeared in many television shows and movies. During his television career he has earned 14 Emmy® award nominations with 3 wins. His most famous movie roles would be The Fabulous Baker Boys, Heart Like A Wheel, Norma Rae and Jerry Maguire.

Very interesting. I would have put "Seabiscuit" and "The Fisher King" ahead of the others. It's a matter of personal taste, I guess (when you aren't a pro critic!)

I like Jeff but didn't like The Dude. Just thought the humour in it was a bit stupid, I guess.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 4 months ago

Hey Paradise7...well if it was my personal list...The Fisher King would be number one. I actually think Bridges had the more difficult role...but Robin Williams(Oscar nominated) and Mercedes Ruehl(Oscar winner) took all the Oscar love from Bridges in that movie. I think True Grit and The Last Picture Show are awesome...I did not like Iron Man very much and I like you, do not understand why The Big Lebowski is gaining a "great classic movie tag" I just rewatched The Big Lebowski...and ended up falling asleep about halfway through. Thanks for checking out my latest hub...it is greatly appreciated.

Hey ryokowaren...thanks for the compliment....hopefully it is the first Tron and not the "new better one from 2010"...I think David Warner makes a much better bad guy than a 30 year old Jeff Bridges image....thanks for the comment.

Glad to see the first of the Bridge family hubs is up with all mentioned. I would love to see Lloyd get his own hub. He was nominated for High Noon and then had trouble with the House Unamerican Committee.

I am a big fan of Lloyd.

My favourite films of Jeff's are alphabetically,

The Fabulous Baker boys

The Fisher King

The Last Picture Show

Seabiscuit

Thunderbolt and Lightningfoot

The movie I am most looking forward to seeing: The Men who stared At Goats.

A movie I saw which I hated..really bad except for the fabulous title song...Against all Odds. Apparently it is a remake of a film I have seen (a 5 star film) but I did not see the resemblance. Both had Richard Widmark in them.

A film I am deliberately avoiding: Heaven's Gate. I am shocked that both this movie and Against all Odds were as high as they were. Audiences must have had high hopes for them before they actually saw the films because both are rated low on imdb.

Films I have seen:

Top Ten Box Office: I have seen 5 of them. These are #1, 5, 6, 9, and 10. I know that you are surprised I saw Iron Man and you are right to be surprised I saw a comic book film. I was with a group of people..fans of Downey, and hey, I have seen a lot of his films.

Top Ten Critics: I have seen only 4 of these: #1, 2, 7 and 10.

Top Ten Movie Score: I have seen 5 of these - #2,3,4,8,9

Overall, I have seen few films I have not yet already mentioned seeing. I have seen 13 of his films. 13 of 57 is 23%, much lower than my percentage for his father.

However, 12 of those 13 movies are in his top 20, despite my hating against all Odds. That is 60% of his top 20, quite high for me considering he is second generation Hollywood.

The other top 20 movie I have not mentioned seeing yet is The Mirror Has Two Faces.

The one movie lower than #20 I have seen? The Last American Hero at #39.

Okay, the comment section isn't working. I am trying to edit my comments for errors before the five minutes is up and I am not allowed to do so. I click on "Edit your Comment" and I am taken to the top of the page. This has been happening to me all day (Sunday).

I thought I had mentioned all 13 films I had seen in my first post , but I hadn't, so here they are in movie order:

Iron Man

The Last Picture Show

Seabiscuit

The Fisher King

Thunderbolt and luightfoot - which I see I listed as "lightningfoot"... and couldn't edit. sigh

Starman (odd..very odd)

Tron (don't ask)

K-Pax

The Mirror Has two Faces

The fabulous Baker Boys

Against All Odds

The Morning After

The Last American Hero

An excellent hub for an excellent actor Bruce, good work amigo.

True Grit numero uno on the moviescore eh? Well it almost nabbed Best Picture last year but was beaten off by The King's Stutter. I liked the new film but prefer the old John Wayne classic I grew up with, nostalgia rules!

Surprised to see the 1976 King Kong rated so highly, the critics were merciless but it did make money, it wasn't the flop people were saying it was. I bought it on DVD, twice. :)

There's a great King Kong quote I always mention when I see that title come up. The legendary Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis produced Kong and he was so sure it was going to break box office records, he was quoted as saying "When Jaws die no one cry, when my Kong die everyone cry!" :)

I've seen 23 of the 57 films on the main chart, more than I expected. 9 from the box office top 10, never seen Seabiscuit [cue gasps] and 6 from the critics top 10.

I saw Tron twice at the cinema in 1982 the dawning of the computer age in films, still enjoyable 30 years later and I've got a big hub lined up for it in the coming weeks. I liked the sequel too, stupendous visuals and sound and music but but the story just wasn't that great, it just felt flat and I saw it in 3D. ;)

Whoa Bridges was up for a lot of good films he turned down, thanks for the info Bruce.

I agree with Flora in that his dad deserves a hub too, but no rush.

Voted Up, useful and interesting.

I'm with you on The Big Lebowski. I had to watch it for a class my senior year of college and it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. So after that fiasco, I ended up dropping the class because the movie and the professor became insufferable.

My favorite movie he has been in that I've seen has to be Iron Man. I thought I had seen more of his films but unfortunately I'm severely behind. Hopefully, I'll get to work on that.

I didn't know he turned down all of those movies but I think it's made his career all the more interesting for it. Great hub! Voted up and interesting.

Hey Flora....13 is much higher than I was expecting....I am only at 27 and it seems that I have been watching Jeff Bridges movies all of my life. The bottom third of his movies are made up of many movies that did not see the light of day.

Against All Odds was pretty popular when it came out, it did decent at the box office and the Phil Collins song was huge as was the video that played on MTV all the time. I thought James Woods was pretty good as the villian, but I most admit I do not even remember Widmark's part at all, but it has been 25 years since I have seen the movie....it is actually one of the few dvds in my mom's collection.

As for Heaven's Gate....I think it would have been lower but he has so many movies that barely got released in theaters, that they helped Heaven's Gate move up some...but 42nd out of 57 is still pretty low. For awhile it had the tag of "biggest flop of all-time" but I rarely hear anybody mention the movie anymore.

Glad to see The Fisher King made your favorite list. I think Jeff Bridges gives the best performance in the movie.

Fat City is one of the movies that I have always wanted to see, but have never come across it...it is directed by one of my favorites, John Huston, and it scored very high according to critics and audiences.

The Men Who Stare At Goats is a very strange movie that I did not like....ok I admit I have a George Clooney bias....but it was kinda of brutal to get through......here is an interesting item....I almost did a George Clooney hub....but at the last minute I picked Jeff.

I will add Lloyd to the list to do in the future....but I did give him a few shout outs in this hub....I do not think he picked up a nomination for High Noon....but he had an awesome career. Thanks for the comments.

Hey Flora looking at your list of 13 you have seen....I would say I am surprised you have not seen the 1976 version of King Kong....and the one I would recommend would be 1982's Kiss Me Goodbye with James Caan and Sally Field. James Caan plays the deceased husband of Sally Field who comes back to haunt/help Field as she prepares to marry Bridges. It is a throwback to 1940s movies...in my opinion of course....thanks for your contribution to the my hub...it is always greatly appreciated.

Hey Steve....let's see in the tally contest....Bruce 27, Steve 23 and Flora 13...I would like to thank....lol. King Kong was a huge hit back in 1976, I remember waiting in a huge line to get into Kong and I do remember people getting very quiet at the end....with some sniffles when Kong died...so I think Dino delivered on his quote....too bad it was filled with some horrible dialogue.....the Jessica Lange scenes with Kong are brutal.

I think his top Ten Movie score movies look pretty good....True Grit had it all....box office, a nomination for him, a best picture nomination, critic love, and audience love. He is excellent in Crazy Heart...but not many people saw that movie....but it still finished in the Top 10....I would highly recommend The Contender if you have not seen it...granted it is about US Presidents....but he does a great job of playing the President....including picking up a Oscar nomination for it.

I look forward to your Tron hub and I will add Lloyd Bridges to my list of people to write hubs about.....as always thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Hey Alecia...I am not the only one that does not understand the power of The Big Lebowski. I like Jeff Bridges and I have been a huge fan of the Coen brothers since their first movie, Blood Simple. But I just do not think The Big Lebowski is a great film. I just bought it on blu-ray thinking maybe I am missing something....but after 2 and a half viewings....I still do not get it.

Jeff Bridges has been starring in movies almost as long as I have been born....so I was a little surprised that I have only seen 27 of his movies.....I have always wanted to see Starman...but nearly 30 years later, and I still have not see that one. Thanks for your comments and for stopping by.

I'm a fan of the Big Lebowski, that is an awesome movie!! Jeff is like a gift that keeps on giving...he's quiet yet packs a punch on screen. I haven't seen True Grit yet, I started to a couple of times but got distracted. Superb actor, superb hub!! Voted UP!

Hey Sunshine625....I find it amazing that each year The Big Lebowski keeps getting bigger and bigger. I am thinking in another 5 or 10 years they are going to make a sequel with the Dude. True Grit is outstanding....and I would think you would like his Oscar winning performance in Crazy Heart....thanks as always for stopping by.

Wow! Great stats. Jeff Bridges is one of those actors who could so easily have falled into the background, but he has done a wonderful job of picking the right projects. I really love his work, and I found this hub to be very interesting. Thanks for posting!

Thanks for the compliment alipuckett. I agree 100% with you about how he is not somebody you mention...when you mention movie star....he pretty much stands in the background....but I am sure many people would love to have a 40 year very successful movie career. Thanks for the comment and for stopping by.

Another great hub, Cogerson. My favourite of his movies are #1-Fisher King, #2 Last Picture Show, #3-Starman, #4-Seabiscuit. I haven't seen some of these movies but I actually went to the cinema to see King Kong in 1976 when it first came out and enjoyed it but have never seen it since. I haven't seen Big Lebowski either; opinion in the comments on this film seem split down the middle on that one, i will have to see it and find out what I think.

WOW, I HAD NOT REALIZED THAT HE HAS MADE THAT MANY MOVIES. I HAVE SEEN MOST OF THEM BUT NOT ALL. STARMAN WAS GOOD - A FACE HAS TWO MIRRORS WAS ON RECENTLY AND I CAUGHT THE LAST HALF OF THE MOVIE AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT AGAIN. I ENJOYED IRON MAN BUT HE PLAYED A GREEDY BAD GUY...I VOTED UP AND AWESOME. WAY TO GO COGERSON...KEEP ON...GREAT PHOTO OF BEAU, JEFF AND LLOYD.

I haven't seen The Contender or Crazy Heart, Bruce. I'll add them to my should see list. The Big Lebowski is a cult film, I own it but I'm not crazy about it. I like some of the dialogue and Bridges is always good value.

Starman is definitely worth seeing Bruce, I think it's the only time an actor playing an alien has been nominated for Best Actor?

Hey Jools99...thanks for the compliment. I like your top 2....and I liked Seabiscuit as well....one of these days I will watch Starman. I think it is the only early John Carpenter film that I have not seen. Very cool that you saw King Kong in the theater as well....it was an event movie....and I really enjoyed it...it was not until I was many years older did I realize how bad some parts of the movie were...thanks for stopping by.

Cogerson:

I had the pleasure of watching True Grit last night. It was a fantastic film, which was undoubtedly due to Mr. Bridges.

What a great coincidence that I happened upon your article today. It was very interesting and a fun read.

hmm. I thought Lloyd got a Golden Globe nomination. In any case, he got the best reviews of his career and was expected to make huge strides in his career. McCarthy put him on the list of reds. Walt Disney was on the list too.

The day that you do a George Clooney hub is the day that you run out of current actors who are A list stars.

as for King Kong 1976, why see a remake when the original is top notch?

I will look out for your recommendation.

Hey BERN1960....he has been a busy man...but I think his father and his brother have been busier....lol. As for IronMan...I thought greed was good? His last few years have been some of the most productive for him...he has four movies in different stages of development that will be coming to theaters soon. I am glad you enjoy The Mirror Has Two Faces and Starman...thanks for the comment.

Hey Steve...Bridges is excellent in Crazy Heart, but the story is pretty standard....while The Contender has a great story, awesome performances by Bridges, Gary Oldman(he should have been nominated), Christian Slater, William L. Peterson, and Joan Allen in of the best performances by an actress ever....she should have won the Oscar but she did get nominated. I keep waiting for the Big Lebowski to turn on for me....but 14 years later and I still do not get it. I think Starman and Fat City are the two movies I am now determined to watch after writing this hub.

Hey Flora....Lloyd Bridges is another actor that could have made my list of actors that never received a nomination. I know he was friends with Larry Parks and that investigation derailed Parks' career as well....Larry Parks as matter of fact is the godfather to Jeff Bridges.

As for Clooney, I might not be the biggest fan....but I think he deserves a hub....so he might be the next current actor I do....currently working on three possible hub subjects....Henry Fonda(#7 on Screen Legends list)....Best Actress Oscar winners.....or my personal favorite films that nobody else seems to like.....trying to make my mind up, as to which direction to go.

As for King Kong....it has not aged very well.....but it was huge in the 1970s....I even had a King Kong board game...the game was pretty lousy....but the gameboard was pretty awesome. I really think you would enjoy either Kiss Me Goodbye or The Contender.

All of those sound like interesting topics for your next hub. :)

Larry Parks... He was recently in the news again because his widow died last year...Betty Garrett.

I first saw Clooney on The Facts of Life.

Hi Bruce; At first, I didn't think too much of Jeff Bridges, when he was making films like "King Kong" and "Tron". But after he made "Tucker' and "the Baker Boys" he turned a corner for me. He's really gotten to be an excellent actor. "Crazyheart' and "True Grit" were both outstanding performances. He'll probably be mostly remembered as 'the Dude' but he's done a lot of impressive work over the years. He's much more talented than brother Beau, and arguably better than dad, too.

(I can't believe that weak 'King Kong' remake was in the top five.)

Another interesting, informative hub.

Hey Flora...I saw that Larry Park's wife had passed....my mom loves his two Jolson movies he made....on our holiday trip we surprised her by bringing those movies on the trip...so we were driving down the interstate and my mom was watching one of her favorite movies, singing Jolson songs....it is a pretty cool memory that I now have of my mother. Clooney Clooney Clooney....he is everywhere....lol.

Hey Rob thanks for stopping by. Let's see...I am sure you remember how big of a movie King Kong was back in the 1970s. I think my friends and I saw it least twice in the theater....as for it's ranking, the fact it is his 2nd biggest box office hit and got two Oscar nominations greatly helped its cause....which made up for the bad reviews from critics and audiences.

I agree Jeff Bridges has gotten better with age...his calender 2010 year was incredible....got an Oscar and had his 3rd and 4th biggest box office hits ever.

Have you seen The Contender? It is one of my favorite films ever.....and I always try and promote it...

The Bridges have been very busy, and each has done nicely...but I think Jeff will be the one people remember in 50 years....thanks for the compliment and the comment.

Hey mckbirdbks...thanks for the compliment and the visit. I agree Jeff Bridges' star is shining the brightest these days...I imagine he is shocked that after 40 years that this type of success has finally come to him.

For some reason Cogerson, most of Jeff Bridges' movies have passed me by (perhaps I'd be more familiar with his work if he'd starred in those roles he was considered for but did not play (some he may have been rejected for, but the ones he chose to turn down - what was he thinking?!)

However, I am surprised, but pleased, to learn that 'Starman' - my favourite of those I have seen - got quite a high ranking, and that he got an Oscar nomination for it. It can't be all that easy to play someone who is alien in mannerism, yet looks entirely human.

Perhaps an interesting page for a modification of your scoring system to attempt to do would be to rate the acting families of Hollywood? Based on both the numbers of close blood relatives in the profession (both acting and maybe technical crafts such as directing) and their successes - I guess the three Bridges would come pretty high up the list, as would the Barrymores and Fondas among others.

Thanks for another interesting page.

Cogerson Hub Author 3 months ago

Hey Greensleeves Hubs...Jeff Bridges did indeed turn down some great parts...but he has also done well with the ones he has picked. Somehow I have not seen Starman....I like John Carpenter movies(especially early Carpenter movies)...so it is strange that I have not seen this movie.

Hey a family ranking hub sounds pretty interesting...I think the Hustons would be up there as well as the Barrymores and the Fondas. If I do a hub on that, I will be sure to give you the proper credit....thanks for the visit and the comment.

Have to agree Cogerson. What with Walter and his son John and John's daughter Anjelica and son Danny, and their nephew Jack who apparently is also in the business - they could virtually fill the acting credits of a movie between them.

But several of them have also had directing credits, so they might argue over who gives the orders :-)

Hey Greensleeves Hubs...I think it would be interesting to say the least....I think Danny Huston has done a good job of becoming one of the better character actors out there....he needs to join granddad, dad and sister as Oscar winners.

Hey Stevennix2001....King Kong is considered a disaster of a movie....but the reality is it was a huge hit at the box office, got some Oscar love and is Jeff Bridges 2nd biggest hit ever. It just has not aged well with time...pretty much like Peter Jackson's King Kong....the only Kong that gets better with time is the original and best Kong...thanks for stopping by.

Hey BryRog57....those two Bridges movies are very good ones...as for your question....yep Lloyd Bridges was in Mafia...the latter part of his career was filled with these parodies....it hit it big with Airplane....then did both Hot Shots movies and Mafia was one of his last movies he ever made.

Hey fullerman5000....I think one day I will enjoy Big Lebowski more, but currently it is not one of my favorite Coen brother movies. Blown Away was very good, an underrated action movie. Thanks for stopping by.

Hey BryRog57....well the Men Who Stare At Goats was pretty weak at the box office....and a very strange movie to boot. As for The Dude...he is growing on me....but I am not yet a fan....maybe viewing number 3 will do the trick. Thanks for the comments.
