As I start writing this hub, my state of Virginia, has just had it's worst earthquake(I live about 100 miles away from the epi-center) in over 100 years, Hurricane Irene is closing in on my area(I live 15 miles from Va Beach), and the Great Dismal Swamp fires(about 20 miles away) have reached "can be seen from space" status. So what I am thinking? Safety of my family? Tape for the windows? Batteries for the flashlights? Will Irene put out the fires? Nope.....I am thinking I should do another hub before I lose my power. So here you go.....my latest and greatest hub ....Mr. James Garner....for you younger readers.....you will know Garner as Duke from The Notebook.

When I was much younger, James Garner was known to me for two things. I knew he was on the very popular show, The Rockford Files and that he was in the Polaroid commercials with Mariette Hartley. It was only after the discovery of one of my favorite movies of all-time, The Great Escape, did I start to realize that Garner had already had a very successful movie career.

Even though James Garner is probably more famous for his television roles, he has been making movies for theaters for the last 55 years. Over those 55 years, Garner has appeared in 48 movies. This hub will provide three tables of information....Table one will list Garner's Top Ten Box Office Hits. Table two will list Garner's highest rated movies based on critics and audience voting/reviewing. And Table three will rank Garner's 48 movies from best to worst using Movie Score. Movie Score combines box office numbers, critical reception, and award recognition.

Doris Day and Garner in his 5th biggest box office hit.... 1963's Move Over Darling...Garner got the Cary Grant role in this remake of My Favorite Wife.

Possibly Interesting Facts About James Garner.

1. James Garner served in the Army's 24th Infantry Division during the Korean War. He was wounded twice during his time in Korea. He received the Purple Heart for the first injury.

2. James Garner's two most successful television shows ended prematurely. Garner quit Maverick quit the series in the third season because of a dispute with Warner Brothers. And he had to quit The Rockford Series for health reasons after season six.

3. James Garner's first starring role was 1958's Darby's Rangers.....he got the role after Charlton Heston turned down the role.

4. James Garner is married to Lois Clarke. They married 14 days after meeting for the first time. They got married on August 17, 1956. According to Garner, "Marriage is like the Army; everyone complains, but you'd be surprised at the large number of people who re-enlist". Garner has two daughters: Kimberly, from Clarke's first marriage, whom he adopted when she was nine years old, and Greta "Gigi" Garner...who is an author who wrote the books...Girl Talk and The Cop Cookbook.

5. James Garner turned down the lead role in First Blood. Imagine if he had taken that role? Stallone would have probably made 13 Rocky movies instead of the 6 he did make.

6. In February 2005 he received the Screen Actors Guild's Lifetime Achievement Award.

7. James Garner has one Oscar(TM) nomination to his credit.....1985's Murphy's Romance...Best Actor ......he also picked up two Golden Globe nominations for his movies...Murphy's Romance and 1963's The Wheeler Dealers.

8. For his tv career, James Garner has received 9 Golden Globe nominations...including two wins......and has received 15 Emmy nominations with two wins.

9. James Garner turned 83 last April 7th.

10. James Garner is the 63rd actor/actress to receive a Cogerson career review hub page. My Greatest Actors/Actress Table has two separate tables....the first table ranks the 63 actors using all of their movies. James Garner comes in at #56 on that table one spot behind #55 Hugh Grant. The second table only looks at the actor's Top Ten Movie Score Movies. On that table James Garner comes in at #54....just ahead of Natalie Portman.

11. James Garner's daughter, Gigi Garner, has an awesome tribute page to her father....check out that tribute here at http://mavrock1.tumblr.com/ .

I like a spagetti western called a Man Called Slade. The first half of it was marvelous and the second half not that great. I liked his American westerns too.

Very nicely done, I love James Garner, I had no idea he had made that many movies. I am glad he is still going strong. I know he had some health issues but he is still kicking and still has a pulse.

I am also glad to hear Mr Garner is still kicking! Married to his wife since 1956?!?! That's like ... hold on (had to get the calculator)...55 years! Kudos to them!! I was a fan of The Rockford Files! He also made me cry in The Notebook and he was Divine with the Ya-Ya Sisterhood!

Cogerson ... creating this hub for James Garner with Mother Nature going stir crazy I commend you. I appreciate your hardwork and dedication!

I enjoyed this hub and I adore James Garner! You got my vote!!! :)

Now...I do one of your requests has been done....lol.

Hey Sunshine625, yep they have been married for 55 years....so they survived him being a star that long...I like when I hear stories like that.

I have not seen The Notebook yet, but I know almost every woman that sees the movie thinks it is a great heart breaking movie.

Nothing better than doing hubs as Mother Nature gets all worked up...if only I could find some D batteries....lol. As always thanks for stopping by and checking out my homes.

Mr. James Garner, I have some great memories of him and my parents, they never seemed to like the same people. But they liked him, my dad loved him as a kid in Maverick and then later as Jim Rockford. My mom fell in love with Garner in his two Doris Day movies and the two Julie Andrews movies. Great memories. Glad to see he is still with us, although I do remember reading he had a stroke a few years ago. Great job Cogerson.

Thanks for stopping by hinton1966....my mom also liked Garner alot, and my father-in-law as a huge Rockford fan....I really think he is the last of the actors from that time....I mean the man played Marlon Brando's best friend in a movie 54 years ago....as well was neighbors with Steve McQueen 40 years ago...lots of history in that man. Thanks for your comments.

Good work Cogerson, Garner has always been one of my faves.

One of my dad's favourite actors too. As a kid I really enjoyed the Support your Local Sheriff and Gunfighter films, great fun.

Marlowe was a big favourite but that was mostly because Bruce Lee (my idol at the time) had a supporting role.

The Great Escape is another favourite I watch every year on DVD.

Sayonara no.1 on the moviescore, hmmm that's a bit misleading, much more a Brando film than a Garner film. But it's been years since I last saw it.

I enjoyed the movie Maverick, but the tv series passed me by, didn't watch it.

Voted Up and Useful.

Hi,Cogerson. I love The Rockford Files. I've not had the opportunity to see Maverick (tv) as yet, but if and when I do...Thanks for making this hub! And I still say you should stay safe!

He is one of the few actors whose recent films I have seen quite a few of them. Usually I avoid them.

Regarding the top 10 lists:

1. I have seen 6 of his box office hits: 1,2,4,7,8,and 9

2. I have seen 9 of his top 10 critics picks-the only one haven't seen is Grand Prix

3. I have seen 8 of his movie Score 10 (the other I haven't seen is Move over darling)

Overall: so far I have seen 23 of his movies. The lowest on your movie score list is Darby's Rangers. Of his top 20, I have seen 13 of them. Of his films he made before I was born (1976) I have seen 16. That is 70% of the films I've seen of his career-much lowest percentage than most actors-shows how much I've actually watched in terms of recent films (by which I mean during my lifetime as I love the studio era).

I prefer his comedies (what? I like someone's comedies enough to watch multiple times? Since when?)and his mysteries although one of my favourites of all time is The Great Escape.

Here are the twenty-three I've seen in their movie order, some with comments, some without:

Sayonara-I keep forgetting he was in this

Marverick-can't stand Mel Gibson, but I put up with him for James

The Great Escape-I try to see this at least once a year

Space Cowboys

Victor/Victoria-halarious musical I adore

Murphy's Romance-own my own copy, but haven't seen since Cory Haim died

The Thrill of it All

The Americanization of Emily

The Notebook-ooh, if you haven't seen James Garner cry...

The Children's Hour-difficult to watch, but excellent

Boy's Night Out-lots of fun

Support your Local Sheriff-just saw this for the umpteenth time

36 Hours-a wonderful thriller not known by a lot of people not old enough to remember when it was first released

Cash McCall

My Fellow Americans-made me sad to see two of my favourites swearing all the time no matter what happened in the plot

Support Your local Gunfighter-a lot of the same people (by the way he was extremely loyal. He should have quit Rockford earlier than he did but he wanted people to remain employed)

Mister Buddwing-another wonderful thriller

Hour of the Gun-more realistic than Gunfight at the OK corral, but I did not enjoy it

Up Periscope

Duel at Diablo

Marlowe-odd seeing hippies in this film based on a book written decades early, but enjoyed the film

Darby's Rangers

My favourite film is Support Your Local Sheriff, followed closely by The Great Escape. A comedy western and a war film. bizarre for me, I know. But Victor Victoria is number 3 :)

Hey Steve....I agree 100% about Sayonara being somewhat misleading....if I would have done a Top 5 breakdown by film....I was going to skip it and mention that he only had a small part in the movie....but the movie was huge and he got 8th billing...which is low but not bad for one of his first movies.

I was surprised that Marlowe did not make much money at the box office. He made it at the end of his peak as a leading man.

I think I watch The Great Escape about once a year myself.....the movie has so many great scenes....the funny thing.....ever freaking time Garner and Pleasance make it to the plane and take off....I think they are going to make it....but they never do....maybe one day. Thanks for checking out my Garner hub.

Hey Flora....well you have seen more than me....I am sitting at 16 of his movies that I have seen....but I have seen The Great Escape about 50 times..lol.

After doing this hub....I am thinking I need to watch the movies he made from 1964 to 1969...the only one I have seen is Support Your Local Sheriff. 36 Hours, The Art of Love, Mister Buddwing and The Wheeler Dealers all look like movies that I would enjoy.

As for your Top 3....I would say we have the same Top 3...but I would move Victor/Victoria to #2....and Sheriff to #3.

Looking at your comments.

Maverick....I always get a kick out of seeing Coburn and Garner in the same movie...years after The Great Escape

The Notebook....I think this is this generation's Love Story...it seems to gain greatness as each year passes.

Boy's Night Out...I like this movie as well....got a Golden Globe for Best Picture...when it was released.

The Children's Hour....I agree 100%...not an easy movie to get through....but Hepburn, Garner and Maclaine are excellent.

Glad you liked the Garner hub....hopefully he can make a couple more movies...I heard he has done great after his most recent medical trouble.

Another great hub Cogerson, and checking out your comments even more impressive about the fact that you did not include in your interesting facts....it is good to know that Mr. Garner is a great dad as well.

My top five James Garner movies

#1 The Great Escape - a classic movie, and I agree with you, everytime I see the movie I think Garner is going to get away once they get the plane off the ground

#2 The Americanization of Emily - great comedy, love Garner and Coburn in the movie

#3 Marlowe - I think without Marlowe maybe would not have seen Jim Rockford

#4 Space Cowboys - so glad this was such a hit

#5 Hour of the Gun - along with Tombstone my favorite retelling of the famous gunfight

Voted up and interesting. You are the man Cogerson.

Thanks for doing a hub on Duke from The Notebook, just thinking about that movie gets me teary eyed. I have actually seen some of his older movies. I love the Doris Day movies and the Julia Andrews movies he made. I thought he was very funny in the movie about the ex-presidents. Another winner voted up and awesome.

Steven Hawode 8 months ago

I have enjoyed James Garner movies for years, when I was a teenager my favorite show was Maverick. But as I got older he turned to movies, and movies they were. From Cash McCall to Support Your Local Gunfighter, I believe I saw all of those movies at the theater.

As for your list, The Children's Hour has to be in his Top 5, 13th seems to low. Mister Buddwing also seems to be higher at least in the Top 20. Great tribute to a great man.

To Gigi Garner, your father brought great joy to my life, I hope all is well for your father and his family. I am looking forward to viewing your tribute hub as well.

As for interesting facts....that might be the best one ever for my movie hubs...thanks for stopping by.

Hey AlabamaGirl86, his romantic comedies are all very good movies....I even think you can include Murphy's Romance in the discussion of romantic comedies as well. Garner actually worked with Andrews in three projects....The Americanization of Emily, Victor/Victoria and a tv movie called One Special Night in 1999. The ex-Presidents movie you mention was called My Fellow Americans with another great actor, Jack Lemmon, as always thanks for your comments.

Hi cogerson; Be careful out there, with all these diasters. People here in NY are panicking but I don't expect it to be much worse here than the earthquake was. But you be careful out there.

As for James Garner, I always think of him as a TV star (because of Maverick and Rockford) and I forget how many films he's been in. I've heard he was close friends with Clint Eastwood in their early, struggling days. Interesting that they both got their breaks in TV westerns (Rawhide and Maverick.)

I think my favorite James Garner film is "Support your Local Sherrif", which I preferrd over "Local Gunfighter".

I really have a hard time imagining Garner in "First Blood." I'm not surprised he turned it down. He's been vocal about his dislike of excessive violence, sex and profanity in the movies.

Good hub,

Rob

Hey Steven Hawode. Thanks for checking out my James Garner hub. That sounds awesome that you were able to see all of his movies from the 1960s at the theater. I imagine if you liked an actor you would have to see it at the theater...because it is not like 3 months later the DVD would be out...or Netflix would offer an internet feed.

As for Children's Hour....it's book office total was not very impressive...but it ranked 3rd according to critics and audiences...and picked up 5 Oscar(TM) nominations as well....Variety lists the movie as its 51st highest box office movie for 1962....

As for Mister Buddwing... I have not seen Mister Buddwing yet...but I am efforting trying to find the movie....so I will have to agree that maybe it should be ranked higher. And finally nice words to the Garner family....and thanks for commenting.

Wow! How fabulous that Mr. Garner's daughter read your hub and loves it so much she has posted your hub on her father's website! In my Richard Widmark fan club, we had a special tribute for him on the site that he heard about through his daughter Anne. It was quite thrilling to know he knew we existed and that we could get word to him through Anne. Congratulations.

Hey Robwrite....well my little girls are going inland to grandma's house...which is about 40 miles away from the ocean and has a generator. While the older and wiser of us will be staying at the homefront. I used to manage a grocery store that was 2 blocks from the Altantic Ocean...and that company made the managers stay at the store during hurricanes....so staying at the house should be easy...but thanks for the concern.

Yep I have read the same thing about Eastwood and Garner....Clint was in episode of Maverick in 1959 called Duel at Sundown....and the Duel was between Clint and James. I love seeing the two of them together in Space Cowboys.

Support Your Local Sheriff seems to be many people's favorite Garner movie...in a close competition with The Great Escape...but both are great movies.... As always thanks for checking out my hub.

Hey Epi...I will check out his Emerald Wells Cafe series...I already am one of his followers....but I will go and see the latest updates.

I almost bought Full Metal Jacket on blu-ray last night...you had three great movies to pick from.

Howard Hughes....watched two movies over and over in his Las Vegas penthouse theater....Jet Pilot and The Conqueror ....both starring John Wayne...he paid a millions of dollars to be the only person on Earth that could watch those movies for nearly 25 years...when he sold RKO....he bought these two movies back after the sell.

I have not yet done Peter Sellers...but he would be a good one to do...I will add him to the list....Jack Lemmon is coming to a hub near you soon.

As for Garner in Maverick....I thought he was the best part of that movie....I loved when Coburn and Garner were in those scenes...they went way back...from TV Westerns, to The Great Escape to The Americanization of Emily and finally Maverick.....thanks as always for your comments.

Hello Cogerson. The length of the comment section says it all. Your Hubs are a magnet. The Great Escape is certainly on my top five list of movies. And I see others here feel the same way. That must mean 'The Magnificeint Seven' (not a Garner movie) is also on your list somewhere. I enjoyed your work here. Thanks for pulling all this information together.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 8 months ago

Hey Flora....good points....currently I am only really interested in the movie actors/actresses....I think one of the main things that interests me about movies is how much or how little a movie made at the box office....I know tv is based on its ratings...but that does not interest me as much...plus if I keep putting out one or two movie hubs a week....I could end up with quite a bit of information....and currently it is nowhere else on the internet....at least that I am aware of....even though I keep getting hit the duplicate tag about every 8 or 9 hubs.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 8 months ago

Hey mckbirdbks ...thanks for the great compliment....I am glad we are in the same boat in our like of the Great Escape....I have The Magnificent Seven in my Steve McQueen hub. Its movie score was 48.11 and finished 7th on the McQueen movies....it would have finished 9th on this hub...it actually did not make too much money at the theater at least in the States. Any suggestions of people you would like to see on a hub...and I can make it happen.

FloraBreenRobison profile image

FloraBreenRobison 8 months ago

I see that your hub on Jack lemmon is no longer published. Was it hit with a duplicate comment warning? Did someone steal it?

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 8 months ago

Yep my Jack Lemmon hub was tagged with a duplicate message a couple days ago....which is very very frustrating...as I know (1) it is an original hub and (2) it is nowhere else on the internet because it comes from a math formula I made up myself and generated from an access file that was created for me to run these movie lists. It makes me wonder why I should continue to publish these hubs here on hubpages.

FloraBreenRobison profile image

FloraBreenRobison 8 months ago

I know. a lot of people are fed up with duplicate warnings-maybe it is the interesting facts?

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 8 months ago

The great thing about the duplicate warning....is they never tell you what the issue is...it is like the ratings board in Hollywood...if a movie gets a NC-17 rating....the rating board only tells them the rating and not what part of the movie earned the rating....so the director has to cut out what he thinks might be offending them.

So I redid the interesting facts....dumped the introduction part altogether....and still got the duplication message...after I resubmitted.

So now I am thinking....well I did a Garner hub so maybe I should take out My Fellow Americans.....or maybe it is the Al Pacino hub...so I should take out Glengary Glen Ross...or maybe it is Mister Roberts from my James Cagney hub....the possiblities go on and on.

Steve Lensman profile image

I sympathise Cogerson, I've had the duplicate thing come up recently on my artists hub, an artist with only a few precious facts to go on. The writing was mine but I couldn't change things like the school he went to, the people he met, the films he worked on etc. I did get angry and considered rewriting the whole thing in Greek.

Sorry buddy it was my daughter's 21st this weekend so i've been dashing about ignoring my hub buddies. The great escape is one of my favourite movies too, based on the truth and excitement plus. I watched an episode of 'Who do you think you are' which traces famous people's ancestors and one relative was in the prison camp. He was still in the line when the German's discovered the tunnel. They are excavating the tunnels now, especially the third tunnel that was an unused back up one.

I was peed off with the notebook as the leading man was a jerk who didn't didn't treat his other lady very nicely. We can't blame James Garner though, now can we? I remember the Ya Ya sisterhood being a good movie, even for an old cynic like me. I've probably seen a few other of his movies, but as usual i can't recall them. Cheers mate and i hope things settle down over there.

I did not see William Holden or Kim Novak on your profile page. Both may be worth a look as a potential Hub for you.

FloraBreenRobison profile image

FloraBreenRobison 8 months ago

In the meantime, why not take a break from this type of hub and write some movie hubs in the style that I wrote My Favourite Columbo episodes? Why not take one of your favourite actors/genres/eras etc. and write about how you feel about them-much in the same way you wrote your hub about your Dad. Only you have your opinions. They will still be movie hubs and all yours even in the prose.

And then you can take the hubs that are getting duplicate warnings, open up an account on blogger, publish them there, and we your fans will follow you on that site just as Bobbirant and Vietnamvet's fans have followed them on blogger.

Hey Steve thanks for the support....I have had duplicate issues before but hub pages has always gotten the issue resolved pretty quickly...this time it has been 5 days...and other than one e-mail...no response from them at all....the hub is just sitting there in limbo.

Hey attemptedhumour...thanks for stopping by and I hope that your daughter had a great birthday....I know I can not believe my oldest son is 23....so I am sure you are stunned that your daughter is already 21.

I have seen numerous shows about the true Great Escape and I find them as fascinating as I find the movie....I do not think I have seen the one you are mentioning...but I will try and locate that one...oh the power of you tube.

Hey mckbirdks....I think you are the second person interested in Kim Novak....but you are the first person to mention William Holden.....I will add both to the list of people to do....Holden should be a good one....a long career with tons of classic movies like Network and Bridge on the River Kwai...thanks for the suggestions.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 8 months ago

Thanks for the suggestions Flora....all things to consider....having written many hubs on hub pages...I have issues in the past with incorrectly labeled duplicate hubs....just this time 5 days without hearing anything back from them....is very frustrating....especially when doing the older actors requires a serious amount of research in finding all the numbers in a career that spans 50 years.

But enough complaining....I greatly appreciate the support and suggestions you have presented.

Excellent job on James Garner here.

He is one of my favorite stars.

He did the comedic and the dramatic and the combo of them all with the same ease.

He apparently had a lot of injuries from his stunts for the movies and TV shows. I believe him and his stunt man traded off periodically because of these injuries.

From watching his TV shows he was loyal to his fellow actors and put them into his shows. Not that they weren't talented which they were, but because he valued them.

Thanks

They need 100,000 signatures to petition the academy anyway so it may not even be possible.
