James Garner Movies-Best to Worst-With Adjusted Inflated Box Office Results/Grosses
89James Garner in one of his most famous roles....Bret Maverick....he played Maverick on television and the 1994 movie Maverick with Mel Gibson.
As I start writing this hub, my state of Virginia, has just had it's worst earthquake(I live about 100 miles away from the epi-center) in over 100 years, Hurricane Irene is closing in on my area(I live 15 miles from Va Beach), and the Great Dismal Swamp fires(about 20 miles away) have reached "can be seen from space" status. So what I am thinking? Safety of my family? Tape for the windows? Batteries for the flashlights? Will Irene put out the fires? Nope.....I am thinking I should do another hub before I lose my power. So here you go.....my latest and greatest hub ....Mr. James Garner....for you younger readers.....you will know Garner as Duke from The Notebook.
When I was much younger, James Garner was known to me for two things. I knew he was on the very popular show, The Rockford Files and that he was in the Polaroid commercials with Mariette Hartley. It was only after the discovery of one of my favorite movies of all-time, The Great Escape, did I start to realize that Garner had already had a very successful movie career.
Even though James Garner is probably more famous for his television roles, he has been making movies for theaters for the last 55 years. Over those 55 years, Garner has appeared in 48 movies. This hub will provide three tables of information....Table one will list Garner's Top Ten Box Office Hits. Table two will list Garner's highest rated movies based on critics and audience voting/reviewing. And Table three will rank Garner's 48 movies from best to worst using Movie Score. Movie Score combines box office numbers, critical reception, and award recognition.
Doris Day and Garner in his 5th biggest box office hit.... 1963's Move Over Darling...Garner got the Cary Grant role in this remake of My Favorite Wife.

Possibly Interesting Facts About James Garner.
1. James Garner served in the Army's 24th Infantry Division during the Korean War. He was wounded twice during his time in Korea. He received the Purple Heart for the first injury.
2. James Garner's two most successful television shows ended prematurely. Garner quit Maverick quit the series in the third season because of a dispute with Warner Brothers. And he had to quit The Rockford Series for health reasons after season six.

According to Garner, "Marriage is like the Army; everyone complains, but you'd be surprised at the large number of people who re-enlist". The second table only looks at the actor's Top Ten Movie Score Movies. On that table James Garner comes in at #54....just ahead of Natalie Portman.
11. James Garner's daughter, Gigi Garner, has an awesome tribute page to her father....check out that tribute here at http://mavrock1.tumblr.com/ .

I like a spagetti western called a Man Called Slade. The first half of it was marvelous and the second half not that great. I liked his American westerns too.
Very nicely done, I love James Garner, I had no idea he had made that many movies. I am glad he is still going strong. I know he had some health issues but he is still kicking and still has a pulse.
I am also glad to hear Mr Garner is still kicking! Married to his wife since 1956?!?! That's like ... hold on (had to get the calculator)...55 years! Kudos to them!! I was a fan of The Rockford Files! He also made me cry in The Notebook and he was Divine with the Ya-Ya Sisterhood!
Cogerson ... creating this hub for James Garner with Mother Nature going stir crazy I commend you. I appreciate your hardwork and dedication!
I enjoyed this hub and I adore James Garner! You got my vote!!! :)
Mr. James Garner, I have some great memories of him and my parents, they never seemed to like the same people. But they liked him, my dad loved him as a kid in Maverick and then later as Jim Rockford. My mom fell in love with Garner in his two Doris Day movies and the two Julie Andrews movies. Great memories. Glad to see he is still with us, although I do remember reading he had a stroke a few years ago. Great job Cogerson.
Good work Cogerson, Garner has always been one of my faves.
One of my dad's favourite actors too. As a kid I really enjoyed the Support your Local Sheriff and Gunfighter films, great fun.
Marlowe was a big favourite but that was mostly because Bruce Lee (my idol at the time) had a supporting role.
The Great Escape is another favourite I watch every year on DVD.
Sayonara no.1 on the moviescore, hmmm that's a bit misleading, much more a Brando film than a Garner film. But it's been years since I last saw it.
I enjoyed the movie Maverick, but the tv series passed me by, didn't watch it.
Voted Up and Useful.
You should have D batteries in your Hurricane Survivor Kit! Cogerson you do have your kit stocked and prepared, right ?!?! Water, non-perishables, portable radio...etc...etc. I bet you do :)
Hi,Cogerson. I love The Rockford Files. I've not had the opportunity to see Maverick (tv) as yet, but if and when I do...Thanks for making this hub! And I still say you should stay safe!
He is one of the few actors whose recent films I have seen quite a few of them. Usually I avoid them.
Regarding the top 10 lists:
1. I have seen 6 of his box office hits: 1,2,4,7,8,and 9
2. I have seen 9 of his top 10 critics picks-the only one haven't seen is Grand Prix
3. I have seen 8 of his movie Score 10 (the other I haven't seen is Move over darling)
Overall: so far I have seen 23 of his movies. The lowest on your movie score list is Darby's Rangers. Of his top 20, I have seen 13 of them. Of his films he made before I was born (1976) I have seen 16. That is 70% of the films I've seen of his career-much lowest percentage than most actors-shows how much I've actually watched in terms of recent films (by which I mean during my lifetime as I love the studio era).
I prefer his comedies (what? I like someone's comedies enough to watch multiple times? Since when?)and his mysteries although one of my favourites of all time is The Great Escape.
Here are the twenty-three I've seen in their movie order, some with comments, some without:
Sayonara-I keep forgetting he was in this
Marverick-can't stand Mel Gibson, but I put up with him for James
The Great Escape-I try to see this at least once a year
Space Cowboys
Victor/Victoria-halarious musical I adore
Murphy's Romance-own my own copy, but haven't seen since Cory Haim died
The Thrill of it All
The Americanization of Emily
The Notebook-ooh, if you haven't seen James Garner cry...
The Children's Hour-difficult to watch, but excellent
Boy's Night Out-lots of fun
Support your Local Sheriff-just saw this for the umpteenth time
36 Hours-a wonderful thriller not known by a lot of people not old enough to remember when it was first released
Cash McCall
My Fellow Americans-made me sad to see two of my favourites swearing all the time no matter what happened in the plot
Support Your local Gunfighter-a lot of the same people (by the way he was extremely loyal. He should have quit Rockford earlier than he did but he wanted people to remain employed)
Mister Buddwing-another wonderful thriller
Hour of the Gun-more realistic than Gunfight at the OK corral, but I did not enjoy it
Up Periscope
Duel at Diablo
Marlowe-odd seeing hippies in this film based on a book written decades early, but enjoyed the film
Darby's Rangers
My favourite film is Support Your Local Sheriff, followed closely by The Great Escape. A comedy western and a war film. bizarre for me, I know. But Victor Victoria is number 3 :)
I liked this, you have done a great job of researching Mr. Garner's movie career. This was an enjoyable read.
HEY, GREAT HUB. I HAVE SEEN SO MANY OF JAMES GARNER MOVIES - HE IS A GREAT ACTOR - HE ALWAYS DOES SUCH A GOOD JOB IN HIS ROLES. THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY WAS A VERY GOOD MOVIE - SO MANY OF THEM WERE SO ENTERTAINING. THANKS FOR SUCH A WONDERFUL HUB - HARD TO BELIEVE HE IS NOW 83...NICE TO KNOW HE HAS SUCH A LONG MARRIAGE TOO...
Here is one more interesting fact about James Garner...
He is the best Father in the whole world!
Please join me in honoring him on my
"MAVERICK'S DAUGHTER" Tribute to him at
Gigi Garner....Thank you so much for sharing that special fact with James Garners fans. We already figured that your father is an amazing husband so he must be the BEST father in the world to you. Your tribute site to your dad is FANtastic! Thanks again!! :)
Good Morning Gigi Garner. So glad you like my son's tribute to your father James Garner. I have enjoyed all his movies - so many good ones. I looked up Maverick's daughter and enjoyed that so much. You should check Cogerson's HUB Remembering My Dad and His Top Five Movies of All Time - a tear jerker for sure. We lost my husband and Cogerson's father in June and he wrote a wonderful HUB. THANKS FOR SHARING GIGI.
Another great hub Cogerson, and checking out your comments even more impressive about the fact that you did not include in your interesting facts....it is good to know that Mr. Garner is a great dad as well.
My top five James Garner movies
#1 The Great Escape - a classic movie, and I agree with you, everytime I see the movie I think Garner is going to get away once they get the plane off the ground
#2 The Americanization of Emily - great comedy, love Garner and Coburn in the movie
#3 Marlowe - I think without Marlowe maybe would not have seen Jim Rockford
#4 Space Cowboys - so glad this was such a hit
#5 Hour of the Gun - along with Tombstone my favorite retelling of the famous gunfight
Voted up and interesting. You are the man Cogerson.
Thanks for doing a hub on Duke from The Notebook, just thinking about that movie gets me teary eyed. I have actually seen some of his older movies. I love the Doris Day movies and the Julia Andrews movies he made. I thought he was very funny in the movie about the ex-presidents. Another winner voted up and awesome.
I have enjoyed James Garner movies for years, when I was a teenager my favorite show was Maverick. But as I got older he turned to movies, and movies they were. From Cash McCall to Support Your Local Gunfighter, I believe I saw all of those movies at the theater.
As for your list, The Children's Hour has to be in his Top 5, 13th seems to low. Mister Buddwing also seems to be higher at least in the Top 20. Great tribute to a great man.
To Gigi Garner, your father brought great joy to my life, I hope all is well for your father and his family. I am looking forward to viewing your tribute hub as well.
Outstanding article on one of the last great actors from a different era.
Hi cogerson; Be careful out there, with all these diasters. People here in NY are panicking but I don't expect it to be much worse here than the earthquake was. But you be careful out there.
As for James Garner, I always think of him as a TV star (because of Maverick and Rockford) and I forget how many films he's been in. I've heard he was close friends with Clint Eastwood in their early, struggling days. Interesting that they both got their breaks in TV westerns (Rawhide and Maverick.)
I think my favorite James Garner film is "Support your Local Sherrif", which I preferrd over "Local Gunfighter".
I really have a hard time imagining Garner in "First Blood." I'm not surprised he turned it down. He's been vocal about his dislike of excessive violence, sex and profanity in the movies.
Good hub,
Rob
Wow! How fabulous that Mr. Garner's daughter read your hub and loves it so much she has posted your hub on her father's website! In my Richard Widmark fan club, we had a special tribute for him on the site that he heard about through his daughter Anne. It was quite thrilling to know he knew we existed and that we could get word to him through Anne. Congratulations.
The Great Escape Was Just About My Father's Favorite Movie As Well A A Movie I Liked A Great Deal...His Tender Moments In The Note Book Were Heartbreaking and a great detachment from The Rockford Files.;)
I really have enjoyed Jamees Garner's career, lots of great movies and at least one great movie for each decade. Sayonara, The Thrill of It, Support Your Local Sheriff, Victor/Victoria, Space Cowboys and The Notebook, what a nice run.
I believe one day Julia & Cameron on your hubs and Tim & Keith on my hubs will respond. Call it a hunch :)
Quality hub, pretty go that his daughter checked out your hub as well. My favorite Garner movie is Space Cowboys, a very fun movie to watch. Keep up the good work.
..I was just telling my buddy MCKBIRDBKS about you - as I send everyone his way to check out his classic EMERALD WELLS CAFE series - I tell everyone about you too my friend - big time - I just had VHS night at the movies once again - last night it was The Blues Brothers and tonight it was Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket or John Ford's A Quiet Man - Stanley won out.
And a trivia question for you - what was the name of Howard Hughes' favorite film late in his life?
love your work .....you always do your homework with passion knowledge and flair ......
and I hated seeing Mr. Garner play second banana to Mel Gibson in the remake of Maverick .......
lake erie time ontario canada 11:30pm
p.s. - have you done one on Peter Sellers yet or have I missed it
James Garner was kinda an everyman. He never seemed too over the top in his roles. Very believable. I enjoyed his movies. Including Tank, and the Castaway Cowboy.
What a pleasure to read this well detailed hub on James Garner's movie career. I think a article on his tv career would be something else to think about.
as there are literally hundreds of well known actors for you to choose from, you might have to consider tv careers simultaneously-in a separate hub, but not wait until movie careers are over. Otherwise you may never get there if you look at the number of names on imdb.com they roam in the thousands plus
Hello Cogerson. The length of the comment section says it all. Your Hubs are a magnet. The Great Escape is certainly on my top five list of movies. And I see others here feel the same way. That must mean 'The Magnificeint Seven' (not a Garner movie) is also on your list somewhere. I enjoyed your work here. Thanks for pulling all this information together.
I see that your hub on Jack lemmon is no longer published. Was it hit with a duplicate comment warning? Did someone steal it?
I know. a lot of people are fed up with duplicate warnings-maybe it is the interesting facts?
I sympathise Cogerson, I've had the duplicate thing come up recently on my artists hub, an artist with only a few precious facts to go on. The writing was mine but I couldn't change things like the school he went to, the people he met, the films he worked on etc. I did get angry and considered rewriting the whole thing in Greek.
Sorry buddy it was my daughter's 21st this weekend so i've been dashing about ignoring my hub buddies. The great escape is one of my favourite movies too, based on the truth and excitement plus. I watched an episode of 'Who do you think you are' which traces famous people's ancestors and one relative was in the prison camp. He was still in the line when the German's discovered the tunnel. They are excavating the tunnels now, especially the third tunnel that was an unused back up one.
I was peed off with the notebook as the leading man was a jerk who didn't didn't treat his other lady very nicely. We can't blame James Garner though, now can we? I remember the Ya Ya sisterhood being a good movie, even for an old cynic like me. I've probably seen a few other of his movies, but as usual i can't recall them. Cheers mate and i hope things settle down over there.
I did not see William Holden or Kim Novak on your profile page. Both may be worth a look as a potential Hub for you.
In the meantime, why not take a break from this type of hub and write some movie hubs in the style that I wrote My Favourite Columbo episodes? Why not take one of your favourite actors/genres/eras etc. and write about how you feel about them-much in the same way you wrote your hub about your Dad. Only you have your opinions. They will still be movie hubs and all yours even in the prose.
And then you can take the hubs that are getting duplicate warnings, open up an account on blogger, publish them there, and we your fans will follow you on that site just as Bobbirant and Vietnamvet's fans have followed them on blogger.
James Garner's older brother Jack Garner died earlier this week. He was also an actor as well as a pro golfer. There is more information on Gigi's website.
To me James Garner will always be Rockford, but I just saw "Murphy's Romance" again & what a great movie that is.
Hey, James Garner is one of the most natural actors...it nevers seems as if he is acting, he just seems like he is being himself.
I never missed and episode of the Rockford Files....
and keep this a secret, but I watched the Notebook...and danged if he did not get me all chocked up a couple of times in that movie...
good stuff cogerson!
:)
Excellent job on James Garner here.
He is one of my favorite stars.
He did the comedic and the dramatic and the combo of them all with the same ease.
He apparently had a lot of injuries from his stunts for the movies and TV shows. I believe him and his stunt man traded off periodically because of these injuries.
From watching his TV shows he was loyal to his fellow actors and put them into his shows. Not that they weren't talented which they were, but because he valued them.
Thanks
Cogerson
Thanks for the information, and I did enjoy this hub.
Peter Breck has died at the age of 82, it has just been announced. Best known for playing Nick Barkley on The Big Valley, he also played Doc Holliday on Maverick opposite Garner.
Have you noticed there is an online petition to get Garner an honorary Oscar? I've signed. I wonder whether he wants one? I know when my Widmark fan club tried to get one, his daughter told us to stop because he didn't want to travel and make a speech. We respected his wishes.
I emailed his daughter. This was her reply, minus her email address:
Yes, I am aware of it. His fan club initiated it for him.
As I said on twitter, he does not care about awards but I personally think he deserves as many as he can get ;)
They need 100,000 signatures to petition the academy anyway so it may not even be possible.
Thanks
Gigi Garner

My email:
Are you aware that there is a campaign to get your father an honorary Oscar? There is a petition going and I have signed it. But I have to wonder. Does your Dad feel comfortable with this? I remember when I was part of an online fan club for Richard Widmark who tried to get one for him and his daughter told us to stop because he didn't want it. By then he was inhis 90's, retired, and living in Connecticut and wasn't intersted in travelling or speeches. I just wondered because your websites for him don't mention this campaign and I don't know who runs his fancebook fsn page -which is how I heard about the campaign.
Sincerely,
Flora Breen Robison
Update - there are only 305 signatures. Sigh.
There is a new hub I'm about to check out about his TV series Maverick:
Hey, Bruce. I just finished watching Move Over Darling for the first time, a remake of My First Wife. It was a lot of fun. That brings my total to 24 out of 48-exactly 50%.
Happy 84th birthday to James Garner!

Awesome as usual. I can see there's no information on "Support your local gunfighter" - Is that unavailable?
