Jack Nicholson is one of the most accomplished actors to ever appear in movies. He has been nominated twelve times for an Academy Award® for acting(winning three times). He has also picked up seventeen Golden Globe® nominations(winning six times). For a complete list of all his nominations and wins see the second table below. His big break was appearing in 1969's Easy Rider. The part of George Hanson was actually written for another actor, Rip Torn, who dropped out of the film after a disagreement with director Dennis Hopper. Nicholson took over the role, received his first Oscar® nomination and has never looked back. Since Easy Rider, Nicholson has appeared in one classic after another. The 1970s, he appeared in the movies Five Easy Pieces, Carnal Knowledge, Chinatown, and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. The 1980s gave us Terms of Endearment, Reds, Prizzi's Honor, Batman and Broadcast News. The 1990s gave us A Few Good Men and As Good As It Gets. In the 2000s he made fewer movies, but still starred in The Departed and About Schmidt. He is also one of only two actors nominated for an Academy Award® for acting in every decade from the 1960s to 2000s. Can you name the other actor to accomplish this feat? Answered provided later in the hub.

#1 One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest(Movie Score 97.38)

Source: Rotten Tomatoes Community Photos

The Best of Jack Nicholson.

Nicholson won his first Academy Award ® for playing R.P. McMurphy in 1975's Best Picture Oscar® Winner....One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. His performance in this movie is ranked second on my Best Movie Performances Ever hub. Classic scenes are everywhere in this movie....but I would say that the imaginary baseball game has to be my favorite. This movie is Nicholson's biggest box office hit and earned the highest critic/audience score of all his movies. Look for Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd as fellow mental patients. Movie is one of three movies to win the Big Five major Academy Awards®. The other two.....1934's It Happened One Night and and 1991's Silence of the Lambs.

#2 Terms of Endearment(Movie Score 92.44)

The Best of Jack Nicholson.

Nicholson won his second Academy Award® in 1983's Terms of Endearment. Terms of Endearment also won the Best Picture Oscar® and Best Actress Oscar® for Shirley MacLaine. Nicholson played former astronaut Garrett Breedlove, who moves in next door to Shirley MacLaine. The movie is Jack Nicholson's 3rd biggest box office hit with 273.50 million in 2011 inflated dollars.

#3 As Good As It Gets(Movie Score 90.04)

Source: Rotten Romatoes Community Photos

The Best of Jack Nicholson.

Nicholson won his third and so far final Academy Award® for 1997's As Good As It Gets. He played Melvin Udal, an author who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder, who falls in love with Helen Hunt and unwillingly befriends Greg Kinnear. Helen Hunt won the Best Actress Acadmey Award® for her role. It is Nicholson's 5th biggest hit at the box office. Verdell the dog steals the show...in my opinion. As Good As It Gets is Nicholson's third performance with a score over 90, so far he is the only actor/actresses to have three 90+ point performances.

#4 A Few Good Men(Movie Score 82.98)

Source: Rotten Tomatoes Community Photos

The Best of Jack Nicholson.

I can not believe that it has been almost twenty years since 1992's A Few Good Men. The movie was directed by Rob Reiner and co-starred Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon and Keifer Sutherland. Nicholson played Colonel Nathan R. Jessep, who gave us the line..."You can not handle the truth" which was voted as the #29 best movie quote by the American Film Institute. A Few Good Men comes in as Nicholson's 4th biggest box office hit. He received both Oscar® nominations and Golden Globe nominations for this role......he lost to Gene Hackman in Unforgiven.

The other actor to be nominated for an Academy Award® for acting in every decade from the 1960s to 2000s....is...... Michael Caine ...I wonder if either will get another nomination before 2019 gets here.

#5 Easy Rider(Movie Score 77.81)

Source: Rotten Tomatoes Community Photos

The Best of Jack Nicholson.

Easy Rider was one of the biggest box office hits of the 1960s. It's 2011 inflated box office gross is 235.30 million, which is good enough to be Nicholson's sixth biggest box office hit. That being said...this is one very difficult movie to watch in 2011.

Better candidates to be ranked #5....The Departed(won Best Picture Academy Award)....Chinatown(a great detective story)......Batman(his biggest hit)....or my favorite The Shining(a movie I can watch over and over...Here's Johnny)

So what the heck are Movie Scores?

Essentially you take the reviews of the experts like Roger Ebert and Leonard Maltin, the scores from Rotten Tomatoes, the public opinion votes from Yahoo Movies and IMDB, and the box office information from Box Office Guru and Box Office Mojo. Movie Score takes all of these options and creates a mathematical equation that generates a score from 1 to 100. The higher the score the better the movie.

My most popular hub to date: Over 11000 hits and 700 comments.

Jack Nicolson is currently ranked 11th on my Greatest Movie Actors/Actresses Table..he is right behind John Wayne(10th) and ahead of Gregory Peck (12th).

The Worst of Jack Nicholson.

The Bronze: How Do You Know(Movie Score 19.48)...I still can not figure out why this movie did some poorly last Christmas....Nicholson had worked with James Brooks(the director) before and each of those movies were well received....plus it had co-stars Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon and Paul Rudd....what went wrong?

RunnerUp: The Evening Star(Movie Score 17.14)...the sequel to Terms of Endearment.....horrible reviews and pretty much ignored at the box office

Winner: Man Trouble(Movie Score 12.13)....earned the lowest critic/audience score of all his movies(32%) .....and could not manage to gross over 10 million in 2011 inflated dollars....put it all together and you have his worst movie

1971's A Safe Place scored low enough to make the worst of list....but......he only did the part as a favor to a friend and his payment for doing the part.....a new color television set.

As expansive as Jack's achievements are,I'm sure there are as many differences of favorite movies of his as there are pi equasions, but I'm a "cuckoo's Nest" and "Shining" Fan,thanks for the heads up Cogerson.;)

Oh my, yes!! You just hit a home-run with this one. One of my favorite actors. I've never seen Jack Nicholson in a movie I didn't like. I tend not to enjoy fantasy, I even loved "Wolf". This is a keeper so I can make it my mission to watch every single movie.

Now that is an impressive Top 10 for Jack. Jack to me is the definition of cool, I would move The Shining up to at least number 10, and move Five Easy Pieces down some. Granted I love the chicken salad sandwich speech in five easy pieces, but I think the rest of that movie is just a little bit BORING. Great hub Cogerson

Jack ceases to amaze me in every movie I've seen of his. Postman Always Rings Twice was the first movie and I was hooked from there. Terms Of Endearment awwwww..... I learned alot about OCD from As Good As It Gets! I intend to make a Bucket List one day, Jack and Morgan awwwwww....

I could go on but it's obvious Jack is the man!!! Fantastic Hub :) You got my vote!!

Nicholson is amazing. One of the all-time greatest actors. Of the actors living today, I'd say he and the great Gene Hackman are the finest. (At one time I would have included DeNiro, before he made a mockery of his legend). I think he was cheated out of a fourth oscar for "About Schmidt". My favorite Nicholson performance was as Jake Gittes in "Chinatown".

Peace,

Rob

Love love love so many of his movies....there was a tribute to him and of his films and characters--I've heard that he refused to let them focus on "As Good As It Gets" or use that distinguishing music (oboe?) that runs through it. He was mad that they added on the OCD part of Melvin' s character, he wanted him to just be a douchebag but necessarily insane, whatever that may mean.

What a wonderful useful HUB for Jack Nicholson - he has certainly made lots of movies. I thought he was so good in A FEW GOOD MEN...that is a great movie for all the actors. Not sure how old he is today but he has given us many hours of entertainment. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK COGERSON...

I was thinking Eastwood, but saw that it was Caine.

So many great movies. I need to make it a point to watch a more of his movies, as I have only seen 4 out of the top 10. That being said The Departed was AWESOME. But my favorite performance from Jack has to be as the Joker in Batman. Thanks for the list.

"I'm just your average horny little devil" Jack Nicholson in The Witches of Eastwick, one of my guilty pleasure favourites.

Three Oscars eh? I'm not surprised. Great actor. Cuckoo's Nest deserves to be on top, I thought The Departed was a little overrated but I'm glad Scorsese finally got his Oscar. And Chinatown should be higher on the moviescore. In my opinion Terms of Endearment shouldn't be in the top 10 let alone no.2!

Okay the Joker... hmmm I liked Heath Ledger's cackling young psycho in Dark Knight but I enjoyed Jack's Joker a lot more and I liked Tim Burton's two gothic Batman movies more than Chris Nolan's flashy reboot, maybe I'm showing my age here. :)

Another corker of a hub Cogerson. Voted up and informative. :)

Great hub, he has so many great movies, I was well into the twentys before I started saying, "bad movie", I agree with you that he does not have many movies left in him

I'm a huge Jack fan. How could I have missed so many of his movies? (Kids, work, etc., etc., I guess.) I saw Easy Rider at a midnight show when I was in college and loved it, but I think you're right that I'd have a different reaction now. Chinatown is probably my all-time favorite movie. Some other favorites: One Lew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Departed, Five Easy Pieces, As Good As It Gets.

Hey Brianlokker....I have seen Easy Rider twice now.....the first time was about twenty years ago....and even then I thought "why was this movie so big"....most recently I watched in about 2 years.....and other when Jack is on screen...the rest of the time....it is a pretty unwatchable movie.....your favorites you listed are all classics...thanks for reading

Thanks for the compliment kittythedreamer....I watched a behind the scenes special feature of filming of The Shining....Jack was so damn cool.....running with Kubrick's punches....back then and now you could tell that he knew how lucky and great his life was and is.....I like that in a celebrity...thanks for reading and commenting

Absolute best actor ever! I can't believe there's a couple movies on this list I haven't seen...have to add them to my future rent list. Thanks!

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 12 months ago

Hey theherbirehippi thanks for reading my Jack hub.....it is hard to argue that Jack is not one the best actors ever....nobody can match his Oscar wins....I just watched How Do You Know.....and he was the best part in that movie as well....it would have been so much better if they would have concentrated on his character.

Jack Nicholson is one of my favorites! I haven't seen quite a bit of his movies though, better get started!

Incredible research. I am big Jack fan and enjoyed the hub. I hope Jack will give us at least another 10years of great performances.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 12 months ago

Thank you The Musiconomy.....I also would like to see another 10 years from Jack.....since 2003 he has only made 3 movies.....and he has no movies listed currently on IMDB....he might join Gene Hackman in retirement. Thanks for stopping by.

Another one I'm a big fan of, just for his perfect choice of his roles he's played over the years they seemed to be just right for him and him alone to be playing. Another actor I'm afraid our younger generations will be lost on however.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 12 months ago

I agree Fluffy77.....his older movies are classic but I know my teenagers think a movie made before 2010 is a waste of time to watch.....my 18 year old always asks...."Hey pops tell me a good movie to watch tonight"....I always suggest One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest....and after two years of recommending the movie he has yet to watch it.....American Pie 43 also gets picked ahead of classic Jack....time marches on.

Thanks for reading my Jack hub....I agree 100% with you about The Shining, I have seen the movie a dozen times and it still can give the creeps....Nicholson is awesome in the movie.....the thing I was think about when watching the movie....is maybe this time Scatman Crothers can save the day....in the book his character is the final hero....in the movie he arrives and dies....maybe one day he will be the hero....lol

...well who dosen't have a favorite Jack movie - lol - I always loved Antonio's The Passenger - and The Last Detail (filmed in Canada where I live) - and of course that classic film as directed by his buddy Sean Penn, The Pledge - in his career there is a young Jack, a middle-aged Jack and now the older Jack who prefers to kick back and watch his beloved Lakers courtside - and oh yeah one more favorite and perhaps the definitve Jack performance - Five Easy Pieces. Love your hubs - you really do such a great job ......

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 11 months ago

Hey epigramman.....thanks for the compliment.....good points on the stages of Jack.....I would say early Jack....my favorite would be Cuckoo's Nest.....middle-aged Jack...would be Witches of Eastwick.....and older Jack would be As Good As It Gets......I just say The Passenger and it was pretty good...although left lots of things unexplained....Last Detail is very good as well....Randy Quaid steals the show in that one....I watched How Do You Know recently...and I found watching him he was difficult...as age and the weight gain made me think of Brando more than classic Jack...thanks for stopping by

Love it. First time I saw Cuckoo's Nest it wowed me, especially Jack's performance there. His agility to play a role like that in Good as it Gets and Shining shows the Versatility of a true star. Quality hubs, man. Thanks!

ps - oddly, Reds is my favorite jack performance, despite the movie being mostly Keaton and Beatty. he's a very understated jack/

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 10 months ago

Thanks for the comments mattdigiulio....Jack is awesome in all the movies you mention....and I know what you mean about Reds....in a movie that is 9 hours long(lol) could Beatty not have given Jack more scenes/lines....he is by far the best part of that movie. Thanks for checking out my Jack hub.

Yes, there are my favorites, like Cuckoo's Nest and Good as it gets...but he never made a bad movie....OR...used his magic to make a bad movie, Great! Thanks for the stats!!! Up & awesome

As promised in my response to your comment on my Sayers hub, I am visiting your Nicholson hub.

First of all, of his nominated films -regardless of Oscar vs. Golden Globe- I have seen 5 of them: Five Easy Pieces, Chinatown, Terms of Endearment, Batman and About Schmidt.

Why Batman, you may ask? I had hoped that they would have Adam West appear in a cameo. Wrong! I haven't bothered with any of the other batman films.

Why not Easy Rider? Just haven't seen it yet, but I do plan to see it. Why not One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest Too disturbing. I may see it eventually, but I'm not ready for it yet.

Okay, to return to Movie Scores: I have seen 4 of his top ten movies. I've mentioned them already.

I have seen 8 of his top 25, and 11 in total. That is 32% of his best films only. Overall, that is only 23% of his films. The lowest on the movie score list is Ensign Pulver at 39.

However, considering my view of films made before I was born, I must look at the years they were made.

Before I was born in 1976: Of the 11 films I've seen 5 of them were made before I was born, for 45% of the films I've seen.

So, what are the eleven films I've seen?

Terms of Endearment-saw this at a friend's house. Well made, but a bit too emotional for me to see a second time.

Chinatown-my favourite of Jack's films. Not a big surprise there. A color film noir, it is one of the few Polanski films I'm willing to watch. I can't resist a film noir. I can't really find a fault with it except I wish someone other than Polanski had played the character that cuts Jack's nose.

Batman-already discussed

Five Easy Pieces-my number two pick. I love the music in the film and the importance of music in this film. Contrast the music scenes with everything else for a powerful juxtaposition.

The Shining-the only King film I've deliberately watched (I saw another at a party). Because he is a writer it intrigued me even though I am not a fan of horror films made after the studio system ended in general. (I haven't seen Misery, by the way, in reference to writers and King, not Jack.)

The Witches of Eastwick-bizarre

On A clear Day You Can see Forever-oh, look a musical I've seen what a surprise

Mars Attacks-what I see because I'm with others and end up outnumbered. yuck.

little Shop of Horrors-he was a bit too convincing as a man who goes to the dentist because he loves pain. Oh, look, another musical! That makes, what, 3 films with music as a main or secondary theme? I've seen this on stage, too.

Ensign Pulver-it's funny, but because of the name I thought that this was going to star Jack lemmon. Noooooo. No relation between the two Ens. Pulvers either. oh, well.

oh, and note to Epi: I didn't see it because it was rated badly, but The Pledge was partially filmed here in Chilliwack.

Hey Flora thanks for visiting my Nicholson hub....after looking at my hub....I decided to give it an update since you commented....so the Top Ten Box Office Hits table and the Top Ten Critics table finally made it to his hub...as well as all the proper trademarks....and of course a summary for the good people at hub pages....thanks for the motivation in getting this done.

To your comments. (1) I think an Adam West cameo would be awesome...I just can not see Christopher Nolan doing that...West might have to wait until the next reboot.

(2) Whenever you watch Easy Rider be prepared for a long grueling movie experience..Jack is easily the best part of the movie...but he only has about 25 minutes in the movie...it's like someone on heavy drugs made the movie....oh wait....they were on heavy drugs when they made the movie. As for One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest....it is one of the best movies I have ever seen....you need to see it.

(3) Terms of Endearment...once again Jack is the best part....just fast forward through all the drama and watch Jack at his best.....Chinatown is another classic...the great John Huston makes a great bad guy.

(4) Five Easy Pieces is a classic...I love the ending of him on the truck playing the piano....and of course the classic chicken sandwich scene in the cafe.

(5) I agree Mars Attacks is a waste of talent....and he is great and believable in the original Little Shop Horrors.....although I think Murray is funnier in the remake.

(6) I have not seen On a Clear Day You Can See Forever or Ensign Pulver.

(7) Other than Cuckoo's Nest....I would recommend The Bucket List(he makes a great team with Freeman) and Goin' South....yes it is a western....but it has some funny moments....and a great supporting cast....John Belusi, Christopher Lloyd, Danny Devito and Mary Steenburgen in her first role...plus Jack directed....

As always I have greatly enjoyed your comments and thoughts.

FloraBreenRobison profile image

FloraBreenRobison 8 months ago

Okay, then I will check out The Bucket list and Goin' South next. I do enjoy courtroom dramas, so I will probably check out A few Good Men as well. I will get to Cookoo's Nest. I will. Just maybe not in the next 12 months. It's the electroshock therapy scenes I don't want to see.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 8 months ago

A Few Good Men is another quality movie. The shock treatment is not a huge part of Cuckoo's Nest...but it is in the movie.....Kirk Douglas said his greatest regret in his career was not playing Nicholson's part in the movie....at least it got his son Michael an Oscar.
