Jack Nicholson-All His Movies Best to Worst- with Inflated Box Office Results.
84Jack's #12 movie The Shining(Movie Score 57.15)....which is my favorite Nicholson performance.
Jack Nicholson is one of the most accomplished actors to ever appear in movies. He has been nominated twelve times for an Academy Award® for acting(winning three times). He has also picked up seventeen Golden Globe® nominations(winning six times). For a complete list of all his nominations and wins see the second table below. His big break was appearing in 1969's Easy Rider. The part of George Hanson was actually written for another actor, Rip Torn, who dropped out of the film after a disagreement with director Dennis Hopper. Nicholson took over the role, received his first Oscar® nomination and has never looked back. Since Easy Rider, Nicholson has appeared in one classic after another. The 1970s, he appeared in the movies Five Easy Pieces, Carnal Knowledge, Chinatown, and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. The 1980s gave us Terms of Endearment, Reds, Prizzi's Honor, Batman and Broadcast News. The 1990s gave us A Few Good Men and As Good As It Gets. In the 2000s he made fewer movies, but still starred in The Departed and About Schmidt. He is also one of only two actors nominated for an Academy Award® for acting in every decade from the 1960s to 2000s. Can you name the other actor to accomplish this feat? Answered provided later in the hub.

#1 One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest(Movie Score 97.38)
The Best of Jack Nicholson.
Nicholson won his first Academy Award ® for playing R.P. McMurphy in 1975's Best Picture Oscar® Winner....One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. His performance in this movie is ranked second on my Best Movie Performances Ever hub. Classic scenes are everywhere in this movie....but I would say that the imaginary baseball game has to be my favorite. This movie is Nicholson's biggest box office hit and earned the highest critic/audience score of all his movies. Look for Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd as fellow mental patients. Movie is one of three movies to win the Big Five major Academy Awards®. The other two.....1934's It Happened One Night and and 1991's Silence of the Lambs.
#2 Terms of Endearment(Movie Score 92.44)
The Best of Jack Nicholson.
Nicholson won his second Academy Award® in 1983's Terms of Endearment. Terms of Endearment also won the Best Picture Oscar® and Best Actress Oscar® for Shirley MacLaine. Nicholson played former astronaut Garrett Breedlove, who moves in next door to Shirley MacLaine. The movie is Jack Nicholson's 3rd biggest box office hit with 273.50 million in 2011 inflated dollars.
#3 As Good As It Gets(Movie Score 90.04)
The Best of Jack Nicholson.
Nicholson won his third and so far final Academy Award® for 1997's As Good As It Gets. He played Melvin Udal, an author who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder, who falls in love with Helen Hunt and unwillingly befriends Greg Kinnear. Helen Hunt won the Best Actress Acadmey Award® for her role. It is Nicholson's 5th biggest hit at the box office. Verdell the dog steals the show...in my opinion. As Good As It Gets is Nicholson's third performance with a score over 90, so far he is the only actor/actresses to have three 90+ point performances.
#4 A Few Good Men(Movie Score 82.98)
The Best of Jack Nicholson.
I can not believe that it has been almost twenty years since 1992's A Few Good Men. The movie was directed by Rob Reiner and co-starred Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon and Keifer Sutherland. Nicholson played Colonel Nathan R. Jessep, who gave us the line..."You can not handle the truth" which was voted as the #29 best movie quote by the American Film Institute. A Few Good Men comes in as Nicholson's 4th biggest box office hit. He received both Oscar® nominations and Golden Globe nominations for this role......he lost to Gene Hackman in Unforgiven.
The other actor to be nominated for an Academy Award® for acting in every decade from the 1960s to 2000s....is...... Michael Caine ...I wonder if either will get another nomination before 2019 gets here.
#5 Easy Rider(Movie Score 77.81)
The Best of Jack Nicholson.
Easy Rider was one of the biggest box office hits of the 1960s. It's 2011 inflated box office gross is 235.30 million, which is good enough to be Nicholson's sixth biggest box office hit. That being said...this is one very difficult movie to watch in 2011.
Better candidates to be ranked #5....The Departed(won Best Picture Academy Award)....Chinatown(a great detective story)......Batman(his biggest hit)....or my favorite The Shining(a movie I can watch over and over...Here's Johnny)

So what the heck are Movie Scores?
Essentially you take the reviews of the experts like Roger Ebert and Leonard Maltin, the scores from Rotten Tomatoes, the public opinion votes from Yahoo Movies and IMDB, and the box office information from Box Office Guru and Box Office Mojo. Movie Score takes all of these options and creates a mathematical equation that generates a score from 1 to 100. The higher the score the better the movie.
My most popular hub to date: Over 11000 hits and 700 comments.

Jack Nicolson is currently ranked 11th on my Greatest Movie Actors/Actresses Table..he is right behind John Wayne(10th) and ahead of Gregory Peck (12th).
The Worst of Jack Nicholson.
The Bronze: How Do You Know(Movie Score 19.48)...I still can not figure out why this movie did some poorly last Christmas....Nicholson had worked with James Brooks(the director) before and each of those movies were well received....plus it had co-stars Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon and Paul Rudd....what went wrong?
RunnerUp: The Evening Star(Movie Score 17.14)...the sequel to Terms of Endearment.....horrible reviews and pretty much ignored at the box office
Winner: Man Trouble(Movie Score 12.13)....earned the lowest critic/audience score of all his movies(32%) .....and could not manage to gross over 10 million in 2011 inflated dollars....put it all together and you have his worst movie
1971's A Safe Place scored low enough to make the worst of list....but......he only did the part as a favor to a friend and his payment for doing the part.....a new color television set.

Oh my, yes!! You just hit a home-run with this one. One of my favorite actors. I've never seen Jack Nicholson in a movie I didn't like. I tend not to enjoy fantasy, I even loved "Wolf". This is a keeper so I can make it my mission to watch every single movie.
voted up/very useful and bookmarked
Great information on my favorite actor. I did not realize that he has so many Golden Globe nominations.
Now that is an impressive Top 10 for Jack. Jack to me is the definition of cool, I would move The Shining up to at least number 10, and move Five Easy Pieces down some. Granted I love the chicken salad sandwich speech in five easy pieces, but I think the rest of that movie is just a little bit BORING. Great hub Cogerson
Wow I just read that he did a movie, A Safe Place, for a color tv set, that is kinda cool too. I have never heard of that movie though.
Jack ceases to amaze me in every movie I've seen of his. Postman Always Rings Twice was the first movie and I was hooked from there. Terms Of Endearment awwwww..... I learned alot about OCD from As Good As It Gets! I intend to make a Bucket List one day, Jack and Morgan awwwwww....
I could go on but it's obvious Jack is the man!!! Fantastic Hub :) You got my vote!!
Nicholson is amazing. One of the all-time greatest actors. Of the actors living today, I'd say he and the great Gene Hackman are the finest. (At one time I would have included DeNiro, before he made a mockery of his legend). I think he was cheated out of a fourth oscar for "About Schmidt". My favorite Nicholson performance was as Jake Gittes in "Chinatown".
Peace,
Rob
Love love love so many of his movies....there was a tribute to him and of his films and characters--I've heard that he refused to let them focus on "As Good As It Gets" or use that distinguishing music (oboe?) that runs through it. He was mad that they added on the OCD part of Melvin' s character, he wanted him to just be a douchebag but necessarily insane, whatever that may mean.
Love the Shining...
Whatever happened to that little boy "Danny" who played Jack's son. "Creepy"
Voted up !
What a wonderful useful HUB for Jack Nicholson - he has certainly made lots of movies. I thought he was so good in A FEW GOOD MEN...that is a great movie for all the actors. Not sure how old he is today but he has given us many hours of entertainment. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK COGERSON...
Liked him ever since "Easy Rider." His voice seems more strained now that seductive, but he can still act.
My favorite is #17 Prizzi's Honor, I love the ending when they both try and kill each other, and Jack is just a little better.
I was thinking Eastwood, but saw that it was Caine.
So many great movies. I need to make it a point to watch a more of his movies, as I have only seen 4 out of the top 10. That being said The Departed was AWESOME. But my favorite performance from Jack has to be as the Joker in Batman. Thanks for the list.
GO ICEMONKEYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"I'm just your average horny little devil" Jack Nicholson in The Witches of Eastwick, one of my guilty pleasure favourites.
Three Oscars eh? I'm not surprised. Great actor. Cuckoo's Nest deserves to be on top, I thought The Departed was a little overrated but I'm glad Scorsese finally got his Oscar. And Chinatown should be higher on the moviescore. In my opinion Terms of Endearment shouldn't be in the top 10 let alone no.2!
Okay the Joker... hmmm I liked Heath Ledger's cackling young psycho in Dark Knight but I enjoyed Jack's Joker a lot more and I liked Tim Burton's two gothic Batman movies more than Chris Nolan's flashy reboot, maybe I'm showing my age here. :)
Another corker of a hub Cogerson. Voted up and informative. :)
Hoho a very nice picture chosen there Cogerson. I might use that on my forum if you don't mind? :)
Great hub, he has so many great movies, I was well into the twentys before I started saying, "bad movie", I agree with you that he does not have many movies left in him
I'm a huge Jack fan. How could I have missed so many of his movies? (Kids, work, etc., etc., I guess.) I saw Easy Rider at a midnight show when I was in college and loved it, but I think you're right that I'd have a different reaction now. Chinatown is probably my all-time favorite movie. Some other favorites: One Lew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Departed, Five Easy Pieces, As Good As It Gets.
voted up and awesome! i am a big fan of jack...more especially his roles in the shining and the witches of eastwick! great table you made...wow super detailed and accurate! great job, as always. :)
Absolute best actor ever! I can't believe there's a couple movies on this list I haven't seen...have to add them to my future rent list. Thanks!
Jack Nicholson is one of my favorites! I haven't seen quite a bit of his movies though, better get started!
Incredible research. I am big Jack fan and enjoyed the hub. I hope Jack will give us at least another 10years of great performances.
Another one I'm a big fan of, just for his perfect choice of his roles he's played over the years they seemed to be just right for him and him alone to be playing. Another actor I'm afraid our younger generations will be lost on however.
Great job! I love The Shining! It's one of those that I watch again and again!
...well who dosen't have a favorite Jack movie - lol - I always loved Antonio's The Passenger - and The Last Detail (filmed in Canada where I live) - and of course that classic film as directed by his buddy Sean Penn, The Pledge - in his career there is a young Jack, a middle-aged Jack and now the older Jack who prefers to kick back and watch his beloved Lakers courtside - and oh yeah one more favorite and perhaps the definitve Jack performance - Five Easy Pieces. Love your hubs - you really do such a great job ......
Love it. First time I saw Cuckoo's Nest it wowed me, especially Jack's performance there. His agility to play a role like that in Good as it Gets and Shining shows the Versatility of a true star. Quality hubs, man. Thanks!
ps - oddly, Reds is my favorite jack performance, despite the movie being mostly Keaton and Beatty. he's a very understated jack/
I was talking about Postman Always Rings Twice today and I had to make sure I gave it a shout-out in this hub...I did 3 months ago...I need to find that movie on VHS. Keep on hubbin' cogerson!!
The kitchen scene is enough to make fans come back for an encore presentation. Just saying.
No I didn't notice! WWF distracted me! Haha! Apology accepted :))
Cogerson....Jack is the KING, in my book. So much so, I can see his movies over and over again, with as much interest and enjoyment each time. Yes, there are my favorites, like Cuckoo's Nest and Good as it gets...but he never made a bad movie....OR...used his magic to make a bad movie, Great! Thanks for the stats!!! Up & awesome
As promised in my response to your comment on my Sayers hub, I am visiting your Nicholson hub.
First of all, of his nominated films -regardless of Oscar vs. Golden Globe- I have seen 5 of them: Five Easy Pieces, Chinatown, Terms of Endearment, Batman and About Schmidt.
Why Batman, you may ask? I had hoped that they would have Adam West appear in a cameo. Wrong! I haven't bothered with any of the other batman films.
Why not Easy Rider? Just haven't seen it yet, but I do plan to see it. Why not One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest Too disturbing. I may see it eventually, but I'm not ready for it yet.
Okay, to return to Movie Scores: I have seen 4 of his top ten movies. I've mentioned them already.
I have seen 8 of his top 25, and 11 in total. That is 32% of his best films only. Overall, that is only 23% of his films. The lowest on the movie score list is Ensign Pulver at 39.
However, considering my view of films made before I was born, I must look at the years they were made.
Before I was born in 1976: Of the 11 films I've seen 5 of them were made before I was born, for 45% of the films I've seen.
So, what are the eleven films I've seen?
Terms of Endearment-saw this at a friend's house. Well made, but a bit too emotional for me to see a second time.
Chinatown-my favourite of Jack's films. Not a big surprise there. A color film noir, it is one of the few Polanski films I'm willing to watch. I can't resist a film noir. I can't really find a fault with it except I wish someone other than Polanski had played the character that cuts Jack's nose.
Batman-already discussed
Five Easy Pieces-my number two pick. I love the music in the film and the importance of music in this film. Contrast the music scenes with everything else for a powerful juxtaposition.
The Shining-the only King film I've deliberately watched (I saw another at a party). Because he is a writer it intrigued me even though I am not a fan of horror films made after the studio system ended in general. (I haven't seen Misery, by the way, in reference to writers and King, not Jack.)
The Witches of Eastwick-bizarre
On A clear Day You Can see Forever-oh, look a musical I've seen what a surprise
Mars Attacks-what I see because I'm with others and end up outnumbered. yuck.
little Shop of Horrors-he was a bit too convincing as a man who goes to the dentist because he loves pain. Oh, look, another musical! That makes, what, 3 films with music as a main or secondary theme? I've seen this on stage, too.
Ensign Pulver-it's funny, but because of the name I thought that this was going to star Jack lemmon. Noooooo. No relation between the two Ens. Pulvers either. oh, well.
oh, and note to Epi: I didn't see it because it was rated badly, but The Pledge was partially filmed here in Chilliwack.
Okay, then I will check out The Bucket list and Goin' South next. I do enjoy courtroom dramas, so I will probably check out A few Good Men as well. I will get to Cookoo's Nest. I will. Just maybe not in the next 12 months. It's the electroshock therapy scenes I don't want to see.

As expansive as Jack's achievements are,I'm sure there are as many differences of favorite movies of his as there are pi equasions, but I'm a "cuckoo's Nest" and "Shining" Fan,thanks for the heads up Cogerson.;)
