Eddie Murphy Movies-Best & Worst-with Inflated Box Office Results/Grosses-Including A Thousand Words.
81Eddie Murphy in 48 Hours..... his first and in my opinion best movie.
Hub Update: Eddie Murphy's newest movie A Thousand Words, is ranked is as his 32nd best movie or 2nd worst movie. The only Eddie Murphy movie ranked worse than A Thousand Words?...the classic movie The Adventures of Pluto Nash. 03/20/2012.
Before Eddie Murphy became one of the our most popular movie stars, he gained his first fame with his 5 year stint on Saturday Night Live(1980-84). During those years, Murphy performed numerous skits with his very popular characters Gumby, Mr. Robinson(spoof of Mr. Rogers) and a grown up Buckwheat. While still a regular cast member of Saturday Night Live he began his movie career. His first movie was the action comedy hit 48 Hours with Nick Nolte. He followed that movie with the even bigger hit Trading Places. In 1984 he appeared in his biggest hit of his career, Beverly Hills Cop....which is ranked #40 on the all-time movie list of blockbusters....using inflated box office grosses.
Over the next ten years Murphy would appear in numerous box office hits like: Coming To America, Beverly Hills Cop 2, The Golden Child and Another 48 Hours. After the box office disappointments of 1994's Beverly Hills Cop and 1995's Vampire in Brooklyn, Murphy started appearing in successful family-friendly movies like The Nutty Professor and Doctor Doolittle movies. In 2006 Eddie Murphy received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win for Dreamgirls. Since 2006, Murphy had a box office success with 2007's Norbit but two flops in Meet Dave and Imagine That.
Eddie Murphy's movies have grossed over 3.7 billion at the U.S. box office. Only Tom Hanks and his 3.8 billion can beat Murphy's box office number. Did you know the last R rated movie Eddie Murphy was 1999's Life? Eddie Murphy returns to theaters this November in the action comedy Tower Heist which also stars Ben Stiller and Matthew Broderick.
Eddie Murphy in his biggest box hit 1984's Beverly Hills Cop.....4th highest grossing R-rated film of all-time.

Eddie Murphy provides the voice of Donkey in the Shrek movies.
Eddie Murphy has had great success providing his voice to animated movies. It started when he played Mushu a Chinese dragon in the 1998 movie Mulan. His most famous voice over is playing Donkey in the Shrek franchise. The four Shrek movies have grossed over 1.2 billion dollars in the U.S. alone.
For the above tables of Eddie Murphy movies, these animated movies are not included. For your viewing pleasure the five movies have a table all on their own.

Adventures of Pluto Nash grossed only 4 million in the U.S. with a critic/audience score of 22%...easily Eddie Murphy's worst movie.
The Worst of Eddie Murphy:
Let's talk about one of Eddie Murphy's least successful films. The Adventures of Pluto Nash was filmed in 2000 with a 100 million dollar budget. After sitting on the shelf for over two years it was finally released in 2002. It's worldwide gross was 7.1 million dollars. The film is one of the worst box office flops of all-time.

I've watched Eddie over a 100 times in "Trading Places" on VHS...and he saved Saturday Night Live. Thanks for sharing Cogerson.;)
He was good in his earlier days, but he's gone off the boil i think. I'm waiting for James Cagney though.
Back in the eighties, my buddies and I were big Eddie Murphy fans. We went to see all his films. We rented "Beverly Hills Cop" a zillion times on VHS. His career has gone through a lot of ups-and-downs since then (He had a hard time living down "Pluto Nash", and "Norbit" was awful) but he's reinvented himself as a family-friendly star, which is an unusual turn of events, considering how edgy he was in his early years.
I think his best performance was in "Dream Girls" (where he showed he could sing much better than he did in that horrible album, 'My girl wants to party all the time'). I liked him best as Axel Foley in the "Beverly Hills Cop" films (Even though the last one was horribly unfunny). He's a very talented film star but I don't like his stand-up routine.
Thanks for the hub.
Rob
Coming To American, 48 Hours and Beverly Hills Cop were good movies. Have not seen too many of the other movies but keep these HUBS coming Cogerson. It must take time and effort to do all these HUBS. THANKS A LOT!
There isn't an Eddie Murphy movie I didn't like!! He even rocks as a donkey!!!! Great hub!!
BTW...I like your new picture?! :)
Excellent! I love Eddie Murphy! Even his stand up comedy cracks me up!
Nice hub you have written. Most of his movies have been sequels. For a grand total of 13 movies that are part of a franchise, almost 40%. Now there is something for you to look, most sequels an actor has appeared. My favorite is Trading Places, have not really paid him much attention the last 20 years. Voted up!
Hey Cogerson great hub, as always. Eddie Murphy is great the original Beverly Hills Cop movie would be my all time favourite movie of his, I also loved Coming to America. Reading his movie list I can't believe how many Eddie Murphy movies that I've not seen.
Loved Eddie Murphy in 48hrs and Beverly Hills Cop, not so much the rest. Like Steve Martin he lost his edginess over time and became a family favourite.
Looking at your list Conanson, the last live-action film of his I saw was Showtime or I Spy back in 2002. I do like his Donkey in the Shrek films though. :)
Voted up and useful.
Very interesting hub. Although it shouldn't come to anyone's surprise that a lot of his older films would be ranked higher, as I think that's when Eddie was truly at his best. Anyways, thanks for writing this, as i'll be sure to rate this up!
Ready to see him in more dramas. No more fat suits. But some of his best work will always be on SNL.
Everytime I see Eddie Murphy, I want to just slap him. It's odd. I thought George Carlin and Richard Pryor were hilarious. Who used more profanity than either of those guys? Yet, I find Eddie Murphy offensive. I can't explain it. I know, I'm weird. :)
This is still an excellent compilation of his work.
up and useful
I AGREE NOT ALL HIS MATERIAL IS FOR EVERYONE.BUT FOR THE MOST PART I THINK HE'S PRETTY GOOD.YOU DID A GOOD JOB ON THIS HUB.
I guess I might be a little slow for not realizing Eddie was the voice of Donkey. But now that I think about it it all makes sense! No wonder I love Donkey... Also love Eddie in Nutty Proffessor and Doc Doolittle. Great hub.
Love this hub! It brought back a lot of great memories. The SNL bits still crack me up as well as the stand-up routines. Although I'm a fan of 48 Hrs. and Beverly Hills Cop, my guilty pleasure is the Nutty Professor. It's just the kind of "dumb" movie I can't get enough of.
I think the Shrek movies helped him out, money wise. For my generation I knew him as Professor Klump, for the next set of kids, they dont even know his name,he is simply the voice of DONKEY. Good HUB, hilarious characters. Thanks.
I really like Eddie Murphy. It is amazing to think of where he is now. Who knew someone who used that much profanity in earlier acts could be so kid friendly now? I guess everyone changes. Voted up!
But I loved Pluto Nash!!! Damn I must really be a bad movie fan! Oh well I liked it anyway.
I LOVE NORBIT : ) HOPE TO FIND SOMETHING BETTER..GREAT JOB E.M.

It looks like the 1980 decade was very good to Eddie Murphy. Since then he has turned from a Richard Pryor clone to a Bill Cosby clone. Which if you ever saw Murphy's Delirious you would think is funny how life has changed him. Voted up.
