Dustin Hoffman Movies-Best to Worst-With 2011 Inflated Box Office Grosses/Results
78Dustin Hoffman in 1979's Kramer vs Kramer.....this movie won Oscars® for Best Picture and Best Actor for Hoffman.
Dustin Hoffman(1937-) has been a movie star longer than I have been alive. That is a pretty impressive accomplishment especially when you consider that I was born in the 1960s. Over his forty-five plus year career he has had great success both at the box office and critical acclaim. Two of his movies are on the all-time adjusted box office charts. 1967's The Graduate is number 19 on that chart while 1982's Tootsie is number 63. On the critical acclaim side of his career, his movies have been nominated for 86 Oscar® and have won the Oscar® 23 times.
This hub is a statistical look at all of Dustin Hoffman's movies. It will provide Hoffman's Top Ten Box Office Hits, Hoffman's Top Ten Movies According to Critics and Audience Voting and finally it ranks Hoffman's 45 live action movies from Best to Worst....using a mathematically formula...called Movie Score. Movie Score combines box office, critical acclaim, and award recognition....and produces a Score for each movie. So it is not simply me ranking them by personal preference.
The personal preference part: I have seen 35 of Dustin Hoffman's 49 movies. I would say my top three favorite Hoffman movies would be 1976's All The President's Men(one of favorites of all-time), 1988's Rain Man(an unforgettable performance) and 2004's Finding Neverland(a small part for Hoffman in a great movie).
Hoffman and Anne Bancroft in one the biggest hits of all-time....1967's The Graduate.

note: I voted for Hitchcock's actress.
My favourite Hoffman films are in order:
Rain Man-he is amazing
Marathon Man-thriller
All the President's Men-thriller
I'm usually not able to actually order my favourites and thus write them alphabetically or by movie score, but this is one case where I can order them based on how much I love the film and how often I watch them. I can't do this with a person like Peck, for example.
I have seen:
7 of his top ten box office hits, five of his top 10 critical hits, and 6 of his top 10 movie Score films. That seems like a lot until I tell you that overall I have seen only ten of his films, not quite a quarter of his career.
The highest film I've seen on the movie list is Rain Man. The lowest film I've seen on the list is Finding Neverland at #18.
Films I haven't seen but are looking forward to seeing are, in Movie Score order:
Papillon
Runaway Jury
Agatha-I know! I should have seen this already
I Heart Huckabees
The ten films I have seen are in Movie Score order:
Rain Man-also my favourite Tom Cruise film
Midnight Cowboy-funny how this was rated X but if released today would be rated R
Tootsie-one of the few comedies I have seen multiple times that does not star Cary Grant. I've performed the song at the end of the movie.
The Graduate-I love the music, but actually, this is probably what I would list tenth of the ten films I've seen. I'm not sure I would have seenit multiple times if I didn't love Simon and Garfunkle music.
All the President's Men-I love this film. an example where the Press actually did make a difference in the world of politics. The real Deep Throat recently died. He revealed his identity himself shortly before then.
Dick Tracy-fun, but not a film I've seen twice
Marathon Man-''Is it safe?" My favourite Olivier performance
Wag the Dog
Finding Neverland.
Films I have no interest in ever seeing even though they are on the top 10 critics or box office hits in alphabetical order:
Kramer vs. Kramer
Little Big Man
Meet the Fockers
Awesome Hub! My favorite Hoffman movie has to be either Tootsie or Kramer v. Kramer with Rain Man in second. I voted for William Holden, I don't know too much about his career and I think it'd be interesting.
There is no arguing with this:
Rain Man-he is amazing
Marathon Man-thriller
All the President's Men-thriller
Give me Papillon, Marathon Man and Lenny, after that he stopped trying he became too mainstream. Nice tribute, as I enjoyed reading about his movie life.
LOVED YOUR COMMENTS ABOUT YOUR DAD. RAIN MAN, ALL THE PRESIDENTS MEN AND TOOTSIE WERE WONDERFUL MOVIES. I HAVE SEEN MOST OF THE MOVIES LISTED BUT NOT ALL. HE IS A VERY GOOD ACTOR. I ENJOYED READING ALL THE PERSONAL INFORMATION YOU PROVIDED. keep up the good work Cogerson.
I actually I have not seen many of his older movies, but I have seen lots of his movies from the last twenty years or so. I agree Finding Neverland is a great movie. I thought Perfume was horrible though. Voted up and interesting.
"Well, my stupid, sorry, parasitic sacks of entrails... revenge is mine!
Long live the Hook!
I thought you'd already done a Dustin Hoffman hub Cogerson and I had replied already. I thought wrong.
Good actor, I wasn't a fan until I saw Marathon Man, a classic 70's thriller with the great Laurence Olivier as a mad dentist, no wait he was a Nazi war criminal. Steve Martin was the mad dentist. :)
I've never seen Kramer vs Kramer, I've successfully avoided it all these years. I did see King Kong vs Godzilla, great fun it was too.
I've seen 26 of Dustin's films Cogers, so you beat me there.
The last film of his I really liked was Outbreak (1995) about a lethal virus. I'd like to get that on Blu-ray. Sphere was good too, based on a Michael Crichton novel about an alien spaceship found in the Pacific Ocean.
Rain Man I have on DVD, but I haven't watched it in ages, not a favourite.
Voted Up, Useful and Interesting
Perfume? Perfume? I seem to remember a movie called Perfume, was it a period piece?
You missed a classic bit of Hoffman trivia, when he appeared tired and dishevelled on set in Marathon Man, he confessed that he had avoided sleep for a few days to prepare for the scene. Laurence Olivier rolled his eyes shook his head and said "Why don't you try acting dear boy?" :)
Btw I voted for Bill Holden.
I am surprised that Isthar is not all the way down at the bottom. I saw about 20 minutes of that train wreck. It is amazing how that has faded over time. Back in the 80s it was always talked about how bad a bomb it was. Voted up and useful.
I saw Sphere. I couldn't buy into the idea that Hoffman And Stone were ever a married couple. Mr Magorioum Wonder Emporium!? That movie had to be worse than Ishtar!
I did like Midnight Cowboy and Wag the Dog. He has done some good work. In fact Rain Man is my favorite Tom Cruise movie because of the work of Dustin Hoffman.
Little Big Man Is My Favorite Dustin movie...Though The Casino Scenes In Rain Man Are Some Of My All Time Favorite Scenes....
Cogerson: re: why I avoid Kramer vs. Kramer: I don't want to watch a movie about a divorced couple fighting over custody of a child. Too depressing and tense, and really, not helpful for the child.
74 years old?!?! Wow, DH has aged like a fine wine!!! He's a superb actor and I've been told by my brother and cousin who met him that he's super nice and down to earth! Rain Man is my favorite movie, followed by Kramer vs Kramer and the Fockers flicks! Wow...74?!?! Who woulda thought! Voted UP!!!
Cogerson-off topic: following your request for Hall and Oates I've written the poem and that will be the next in the series. However, the next two hubs are on my cat and then Cinderella, so I will not publish the poem until this weekend.
I haven't seen Little Fockers....I voted for Joan Crawford, I have a few things I'd like to say to her! lol
um, your Mother in law? Whatever you do, keep Sidney in your polls. :) I'll be sure to vote for him in any poll no matter who else in the poll.
Cogerson-you are actually the first person to request anything from me beyond everything to do with my cat. :)
Great info! Of course, I adore Dustin Hoffman. Last year I did a movie watching and discussion lesson with one of my Chinese students in which we watched The Graduate and Last Chance Harvey. Very interesting discussion. Even though we had talked about it, she didn't realize he was the same actor in both movies! Of course, that's partly because of age and partly because he's such a great actor. When I pointed out to her that he had done the same thing with "Kate" that he did with "Elaine" (followed the ladies onto public transportation to pursue them) she said, "Wait! That was the same actor? Now I have to watch both movies again! " LOL!
And I LOVED Last Chance Harvey! So great to see a romance between mature people. I have my own copy of it - also Little Big Man and Kramer vs. Kramer and Rain Man, too, now that I think of it! I will definitely go through your lists and choose some more Dustin Hoffman movies to watch!
Do Stanley Tucci next! Every time I see him in a movie, I think, "Who is that fine actor?" because he is so capable of being completely different from one role to the next. Then I see his name in the credits and say, "OH! Stanley Tucci! I love Stanley Tucci!" :D
Hoffman is one of the finest living actors. I'd put him in the top five living legends category, along with Hackman, Nicholson, Pacino and De Niro. My favorite film of his was "All the President's Men". He's made a few stinkers, like "Ishtar" and "Dick Tracy" but that's bound to happen in a 40-plus year career. He's been around so long, I can't remember a time when I didn't know his name.
Another well done hub.
Rob
I don't think of Stanley Tucci as a character actor. I think of him as a leading man. He had the lead male role in Julie and Julia and in The Lovely Bones and probably others that I am not thinking of right now.
I can’t find the ballet box. How do I get Roy Scheider on your radar screen?
justmesuzanne-he has moved into lead roles lately, but Tucci started out as a supporting actor, which I think is what Cogerson meant as these hubs look at entire careers to date.
mckbirdbks-well, you mention Roy Sheider, for one, which you have just done. Then you hope other people suggest him so that he appears on the next poll of dead actors. :)
Roy Sheider's, Sorcerer a 1977 thriller adventure film, was more suspensful than Marathon Man. Pardon me Mr. Hoffman for saying so.
Well, first I love Bergman, so I am happy! hmm. Well, if it were me, I would probably make my mother-in-law happy and forget the polls. But I am *not* you, and that wouldn't involve the polling system which you enjoy....Two of these names are dead. Two of these names are alive. If you want to keep your live dead live dead trend alive you should do a living person next. That is if this back and forth is important to you. In which case, Holden and Scheider will have to wait. If it is not and you are more interested in who is most requested, include only people requested by several different people. I've already stated who I will vote for regardless of the other names until Poitier is done. As for Holden and Scheider, I love both their work, but I would vote for Holden first-he has been on the list longer.
If you were to put those 4 names up in a poll together, I would vote for Poitier. Steve would vote for Holden. as for others, it would be interesting how Scheider would do since he only recently died and thus I imagine a lot of your readers both young and old are familiar with him.
But..I say make your mother-in-law happy and do Poitier after Bergman regardless of the polling sytem... broken record...Poitier...Poitier...Poitier
You know what would be really cool? If you asked for suggestions from each of your family members and submitted a poll to us, your fans, based on their suggestions. There could be one from each of them, or perhaps include only your eldest sons as I imagine your young children love everything daddy does. That would be five choices per poll-your Mom, wife, mother-in-law, oldest son, and second oldest son.
Just a thought. None of your fans are related to you. Family first. :)
Here give me that broom, I'll sweep confetti, you go write about someone.Congratulations on 50k.
As always, you really outdone yourself with this hub. Plus, I liked how your starting to include little facts about the actors that many of us probably didn't know. As far as the "Graduate" goes, I remember taking a film class in high school once, and we watched that movie too. All the kids in the class were grossed out on how an older woman would try to seduce a 20 twenty something year old character in the movie. However, that's when our teacher yelled at us saying that it wasn't that gross, as he mentioned their actual ages when they shot the film like you did here. lol. Granted, I know you can say it's just a bunch of obnoxious kids, but it was still funny at the time. Not to dismiss the "Graduate", as it's actually one of my favorites. I was just bringing that up, since your hub reminded me of it. lol.
By the way, I decided to unfollow that stevennix2001 guy. Boy is he ever a pompous a** ain't he? ;) lol j/k
Anyway, keep up the good work. :)
Congratulations on 50,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh contrare-you have three to go-you are at 97 hubs. There is an accolade for 100 hubs. But I know what you mean wit hviews. 100, 10,000, 50,000, 100,000 and then not until 1,000,00. :)
p.s. I'm glad you are abandoning the polls.
There isn't one for 50,000? Oh, there should be, though. sigh. I know there isn't any accolade between 100 and 500 hubs or followers.
I know there is a 500 followers. One of the people I follow recenrly reached 500 followers and he got an accolade. .
Cogerson - Voted up and awesome. You are just the BOMB (yes, I just said the Bomb) at making these movie charts. I have to say that I really do like Dustin Hoffman, favorite having to be Kung Fu Panda! :)

Another fantastic review. Little Big Man is one of my all time favorite movies. I like the narration approach it used. Following that would be Rain Man. I liked the graduate not so much for him, but Anne. I saw it in my junior year of high school around 70-71, so I guess I was behind the times. I saw it at a 'drive-in' theater. Hey what an idea for a hub - Drive In Theaters.
