Dustin Hoffman(1937-) has been a movie star longer than I have been alive. That is a pretty impressive accomplishment especially when you consider that I was born in the 1960s. Over his forty-five plus year career he has had great success both at the box office and critical acclaim. Two of his movies are on the all-time adjusted box office charts. 1967's The Graduate is number 19 on that chart while 1982's Tootsie is number 63. On the critical acclaim side of his career, his movies have been nominated for 86 Oscar® and have won the Oscar® 23 times.

This hub is a statistical look at all of Dustin Hoffman's movies. It will provide Hoffman's Top Ten Box Office Hits, Hoffman's Top Ten Movies According to Critics and Audience Voting and finally it ranks Hoffman's 45 live action movies from Best to Worst....using a mathematically formula...called Movie Score. Movie Score combines box office, critical acclaim, and award recognition....and produces a Score for each movie. So it is not simply me ranking them by personal preference.

The personal preference part: I have seen 35 of Dustin Hoffman's 49 movies. I would say my top three favorite Hoffman movies would be 1976's All The President's Men(one of favorites of all-time), 1988's Rain Man(an unforgettable performance) and 2004's Finding Neverland(a small part for Hoffman in a great movie).

Another fantastic review. Little Big Man is one of my all time favorite movies. I like the narration approach it used. Following that would be Rain Man. I liked the graduate not so much for him, but Anne. I saw it in my junior year of high school around 70-71, so I guess I was behind the times. I saw it at a 'drive-in' theater. Hey what an idea for a hub - Drive In Theaters.

note: I voted for Hitchcock's actress.

My favourite Hoffman films are in order:

Rain Man-he is amazing

Marathon Man-thriller

All the President's Men-thriller

I'm usually not able to actually order my favourites and thus write them alphabetically or by movie score, but this is one case where I can order them based on how much I love the film and how often I watch them. I can't do this with a person like Peck, for example.

I have seen:

7 of his top ten box office hits, five of his top 10 critical hits, and 6 of his top 10 movie Score films. That seems like a lot until I tell you that overall I have seen only ten of his films, not quite a quarter of his career.

The highest film I've seen on the movie list is Rain Man. The lowest film I've seen on the list is Finding Neverland at #18.

Films I haven't seen but are looking forward to seeing are, in Movie Score order:

Papillon

Runaway Jury

Agatha-I know! I should have seen this already

I Heart Huckabees

The ten films I have seen are in Movie Score order:

Rain Man-also my favourite Tom Cruise film

Midnight Cowboy-funny how this was rated X but if released today would be rated R

Tootsie-one of the few comedies I have seen multiple times that does not star Cary Grant. I've performed the song at the end of the movie.

The Graduate-I love the music, but actually, this is probably what I would list tenth of the ten films I've seen. I'm not sure I would have seenit multiple times if I didn't love Simon and Garfunkle music.

All the President's Men-I love this film. an example where the Press actually did make a difference in the world of politics. The real Deep Throat recently died. He revealed his identity himself shortly before then.

Dick Tracy-fun, but not a film I've seen twice

Marathon Man-''Is it safe?" My favourite Olivier performance

Wag the Dog

Finding Neverland.

Films I have no interest in ever seeing even though they are on the top 10 critics or box office hits in alphabetical order:

Kramer vs. Kramer

Little Big Man

Meet the Fockers

Hey tsmog, thanks for the compliment and for checking out my Hoffman hub. I agree Little Big Man is one of the first westerns I ever really noticed...talking a time long ago....I remember Little Big Man playing on the Sunday Night Movie of the week numerous times....that was back in the 1970s when Sunday Night Movies was the only way to see movies. Interesting idea about drive-ins....I was recently reading an article about the peak and death of drive-ins.....at one point there were thousands and thousands of drive-ins...thanks for the comments.

Hey Flora.....first of all I am shocked that you have not seen Agatha. If you would have told me before that you had only seen one Dustin Hoffman....I would have bet serious money that movie would have been Agatha. Good thing I do not live in Las Vegas.

Well we agree on Rain Man and All The President's Men...and Marathon Man would be near my top 3.

Well looking at your list it looks like you have most of his most famous roles covered with the exception of Kramer vs Kramer and Papillon(which is more a McQueen movie than Hoffman movie)

-I Heart Huckabees was not an easy movie to finish, I know it has some fans.....but I am not one of them.

-Olivier is awesome in Marathon Man....glad he is not my dentist.

-I think Midnight Cowboy might get a PG13 rating if it got released in 2011.

And finally another reason why I like All The President's Men so much.....my father worked at the Washington Post during the time frame of the Watergate story......he shared lots of great behind the scenes stuff about that time....his biggest complaint about the movie was the fact that the movie showed Redford and Hoffman doing lots of their writing on the floor with the other writers....he said the reality was..... everybody was so paranoid that all the writing and talking took place behind closed doors and was very hush hush....not something anybody on the Post would even mention to somebody who was not working on the story.

Hey Alecia Murphy...thanks for stopping by... your top movies are all classic movies...hard to argue against either Tootsie, Rain Man or Kramer vs Kramer....those three movies earned a boatload of money and a ton of Oscars....I always loved Bill Murray in his uncredited part in Tootsie...hilarious. As for William Holden he was a great actor....and he has finished 2nd in the last two polls...maybe the third poll will be the charm....thanks for the comments.

I thought you'd already done a Dustin Hoffman hub Cogerson and I had replied already. I thought wrong.

Good actor, I wasn't a fan until I saw Marathon Man, a classic 70's thriller with the great Laurence Olivier as a mad dentist, no wait he was a Nazi war criminal. Steve Martin was the mad dentist. :)

I've never seen Kramer vs Kramer, I've successfully avoided it all these years. I did see King Kong vs Godzilla, great fun it was too.

I've seen 26 of Dustin's films Cogers, so you beat me there.

The last film of his I really liked was Outbreak (1995) about a lethal virus. I'd like to get that on Blu-ray. Sphere was good too, based on a Michael Crichton novel about an alien spaceship found in the Pacific Ocean.

Rain Man I have on DVD, but I haven't watched it in ages, not a favourite.

Voted Up, Useful and Interesting

Hey Steve...thanks for checking out my Hoffman hub. I agree about Marathon Man....I watched it with my 19 year old a couple of months ago....he thought it was boring and could not understand ..."why all the fuss"....he thinks Steve Martin in Little Shop is a meaner dentist...I just do not understand today's youth....lol.

26 movies is over half of his career. Outbreak seems to be getting lots of attention these days with the success of Contagion at the box office. Wow I am surprised that not only you but Flora have avoided Kramer vs Kramer...it is a Oscar winner for Best Picture...as well as Oscars for Hoffman and Streep....... You have Rain Man on DVD....does not Tom Cruise star in that movie...I am confused....lol.

The interesting stat that I did not include....Hoffman's Perfume(that does not sound like a movie) earned about 3 million in the USA, but it earned close to 140 million in worldwide box office....did England go crazy over Perfume? Thanks for the comments...you are the man.

Perfume? Perfume? I seem to remember a movie called Perfume, was it a period piece?

You missed a classic bit of Hoffman trivia, when he appeared tired and dishevelled on set in Marathon Man, he confessed that he had avoided sleep for a few days to prepare for the scene. Laurence Olivier rolled his eyes shook his head and said "Why don't you try acting dear boy?" :)

Btw I voted for Bill Holden.

I am surprised that Isthar is not all the way down at the bottom. I saw about 20 minutes of that train wreck. It is amazing how that has faded over time. Back in the 80s it was always talked about how bad a bomb it was. Voted up and useful.

Hey Steve...Perfume-The Story of a Murderer...Hoffman played a perfume creator who takes in a serial killer...it is a depressing story with gruesome acts of violence....and it was ignored in the states....but looks like it was very very popular around the world.

Nice story about Hoffman and Olivier...I had not heard that one before...thanks for sharing.

As for your vote...we are coming down to the wire...and it is nose to nose....between Holden and Bergman....Holden is like a horse that can never win its maiden race....but always finishes in the money.

74 years old?!?! Wow, DH has aged like a fine wine!!! He's a superb actor and I've been told by my brother and cousin who met him that he's super nice and down to earth! Rain Man is my favorite movie, followed by Kramer vs Kramer and the Fockers flicks! Wow...74?!?! Who woulda thought! Voted UP!!!

Hey Ruffridyer....Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium was a very strange movie....Hoffman seemed to be trying to do a Johnny Depp role in a Tim Burton movie...it did not work.

I think you are one of many people that say RainMan is your favorite Tom Cruise movie because of Dustin Hoffman....he deserved his Oscar that he won. His Ratso is a great character...I loved the spoof Seinfeld did of that movie. Thanks for the comments.

Hey mentalist acer....Little Big Man is a classic western...there are parts of that movie that I think about on a regular basis.....like the probability that somebody actually survived Custer's Last Stand....or the indian who did everything backwards.....or any scene Fay Dunaway was in.

I agree the casino scenes in Rain Man are awesome...like when we first see Hoffman in his white suit...great stuff.....thanks for the stopping by and checking out my Hoffman hub.

Cogerson-off topic: following your request for Hall and Oates I've written the poem and that will be the next in the series. However, the next two hubs are on my cat and then Cinderella, so I will not publish the poem until this weekend.

Hey Flora....I understand your reasoning....I will say that the way movie is designed .....Streep leaves him and the boy during the first 5 minutes of the movie....and then we do not see Streep until the final 30 minutes...when she wants the boy back. Meanwhile the movie deals with Hoffman adapting to being a single father...and he realizes all the things he thought were important were really not important....and that his son is what it is all about. Having raised my older two children as a single father....I can really identify Hoffman's character. My older kids and I used to watch this movie repeatedly back in the day.

Hey Sunshine625....yep I was shocked when I realized he was 74.....but then again he was 30 when he hit it big back in 1967. He is aging very well and I am glad to see he is nice guy when not on a movie set. I like all the movies you mentioned with the exception of the last Focker movie...Little Fockers...that was a terrible movie...only made for the sake of money. Thanks for visiting...so which non-pulse actor did you vote for?

um, your Mother in law? Whatever you do, keep Sidney in your polls. :) I'll be sure to vote for him in any poll no matter who else in the poll.

Great info! Of course, I adore Dustin Hoffman. Last year I did a movie watching and discussion lesson with one of my Chinese students in which we watched The Graduate and Last Chance Harvey. Very interesting discussion. Even though we had talked about it, she didn't realize he was the same actor in both movies! Of course, that's partly because of age and partly because he's such a great actor. When I pointed out to her that he had done the same thing with "Kate" that he did with "Elaine" (followed the ladies onto public transportation to pursue them) she said, "Wait! That was the same actor? Now I have to watch both movies again! " LOL!

And I LOVED Last Chance Harvey! So great to see a romance between mature people. I have my own copy of it - also Little Big Man and Kramer vs. Kramer and Rain Man, too, now that I think of it! I will definitely go through your lists and choose some more Dustin Hoffman movies to watch!

Do Stanley Tucci next! Every time I see him in a movie, I think, "Who is that fine actor?" because he is so capable of being completely different from one role to the next. Then I see his name in the credits and say, "OH! Stanley Tucci! I love Stanley Tucci!" :D

Hoffman is one of the finest living actors. I'd put him in the top five living legends category, along with Hackman, Nicholson, Pacino and De Niro. My favorite film of his was "All the President's Men". He's made a few stinkers, like "Ishtar" and "Dick Tracy" but that's bound to happen in a 40-plus year career. He's been around so long, I can't remember a time when I didn't know his name.

Another well done hub.

Rob

Hey justmesuzanne....thanks for the compliment ....interesting points about The Graduate and Last Chance Harvey.....I liked Last Chance Harvey....it might end up being Hoffman's last leading role....and he does great in his role.

Your collection of Hoffman movies is impressive...as the three movies you mention are all great movies.

I will add Stanley Tucci to the list of actors to do....I have only really done one character actor(Christopher Walken) so far....but Tucci would be a good one to do. Thanks for checking out my Hoffman hub.

Hey Rob....I am in the same boat as you....I can not remember a time when I was not aware of Mr. Dustin Hoffman. He is one of nine actors in the history of actors to win two Oscars for Best Actor...that has to put him in the living legend category.

We agree that All The President's Men is his best movie...I get hooked into that movie every time I see it on tv....almost like I do not know how it well end. Thanks for stopping by.

I don't think of Stanley Tucci as a character actor. I think of him as a leading man. He had the lead male role in Julie and Julia and in The Lovely Bones and probably others that I am not thinking of right now.

I can’t find the ballet box. How do I get Roy Scheider on your radar screen?

FloraBreenRobison profile image

FloraBreenRobison 8 months ago

justmesuzanne-he has moved into lead roles lately, but Tucci started out as a supporting actor, which I think is what Cogerson meant as these hubs look at entire careers to date.

mckbirdbks-well, you mention Roy Sheider, for one, which you have just done. Then you hope other people suggest him so that he appears on the next poll of dead actors. :)

mckbirdbks profile image

Roy Sheider's, Sorcerer a 1977 thriller adventure film, was more suspensful than Marathon Man. Pardon me Mr. Hoffman for saying so.

Hey justmesuzanne....I have always liked Stanley Tucci in his movies.....I especially liked him in Lucky Number Slevin, The Terminal, The Devil Wears Prada, Big Night(which he also co-directed)and A Life Less Ordinary....looking at these quality movies the man deserves a hub. Thanks for the input.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 8 months ago

Hey mckbirdbks....consider Mr. Scheider on the list of hubs to do....Jaws and All That Jazz not to mention The French Connection are some of my favorite movies. As for your previous suggestion of William Holden....he finished twice in the polls, then I thought he had this one won...but falls to third place as Hope and Bergman got late support. Thanks for your suggestions...they are greatly appreciated.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 8 months ago

So Flora...since Bergman is the winner of the poll....who should be next?...my mother in law wants Sidney Poitier , Steve Lensman wants William Holden, mckbirdbks wants Roy Scheider and William Holden and Justmesuzanne wants Stanley Tucci. So many possibilities and so little time to accomplish everything.

FloraBreenRobison profile image

FloraBreenRobison 8 months ago

Well, first I love Bergman, so I am happy! hmm. Well, if it were me, I would probably make my mother-in-law happy and forget the polls. But I am *not* you, and that wouldn't involve the polling system which you enjoy....Two of these names are dead. Two of these names are alive. If you want to keep your live dead live dead trend alive you should do a living person next. That is if this back and forth is important to you. In which case, Holden and Scheider will have to wait. If it is not and you are more interested in who is most requested, include only people requested by several different people. I've already stated who I will vote for regardless of the other names until Poitier is done. As for Holden and Scheider, I love both their work, but I would vote for Holden first-he has been on the list longer.

If you were to put those 4 names up in a poll together, I would vote for Poitier. Steve would vote for Holden. as for others, it would be interesting how Scheider would do since he only recently died and thus I imagine a lot of your readers both young and old are familiar with him.

But..I say make your mother-in-law happy and do Poitier after Bergman regardless of the polling sytem... broken record...Poitier...Poitier...Poitier

You know what would be really cool? If you asked for suggestions from each of your family members and submitted a poll to us, your fans, based on their suggestions. There could be one from each of them, or perhaps include only your eldest sons as I imagine your young children love everything daddy does. That would be five choices per poll-your Mom, wife, mother-in-law, oldest son, and second oldest son.

Just a thought. None of your fans are related to you. Family first. :)

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 8 months ago

Hey Flora...so if I am reading this correctly you are saying I should do Scheider next?....lol. As my hubs have gotten somewhat more of a following the suggestions have gotten considerably more than I can produce....So I started the poll....which actually seems to have increased the amount of suggestions....other suggestions recently include Kim Novak, Martin Sheen, Charlie Sheen, Grace Kelly, Lee J. Cobb, Vincent Price and many others. So I think I am going to retire the poll...and pick the ones with the most requests....so Poitier, and Holden will be coming soon.....and thus my mother-in-law will be happy...especially with her about to return for a visit to see her grandkids. But I do thank you for your thoughts and suggestions.

Comment 2. Good suggestion....of all the people you suggested....my mom is the one that reads and responds to every hub I write....so her suggestions generally go to the top of the charts....I have already covered her most requested actors...Hudson(her favorite), Day, Douglas(both Kirk and Michael) and Grant...I think the only one she has mentioned at all that I have not done is Tony Curtis. Yesterday big day on the Cogerson hubs...crossed 50,000 hits....still cleaning up the confetti.

As always, you really outdone yourself with this hub. Plus, I liked how your starting to include little facts about the actors that many of us probably didn't know. As far as the "Graduate" goes, I remember taking a film class in high school once, and we watched that movie too. All the kids in the class were grossed out on how an older woman would try to seduce a 20 twenty something year old character in the movie. However, that's when our teacher yelled at us saying that it wasn't that gross, as he mentioned their actual ages when they shot the film like you did here. lol. Granted, I know you can say it's just a bunch of obnoxious kids, but it was still funny at the time. Not to dismiss the "Graduate", as it's actually one of my favorites. I was just bringing that up, since your hub reminded me of it. lol.

By the way, I decided to unfollow that stevennix2001 guy. Boy is he ever a pompous a** ain't he? ;) lol j/k

Anyway, keep up the good work. :)

Thanks Stevennix2001...I appreciate the compliment.....as for their age differences....just goes to show how well Hoffman did his role...because he convinced an entire nation that he was this young kid just out of college. I also think that is why it is shocking to realize that Hoffman is almost 75.

I am glad you like the facts.....they are fun trying to find different things out about each hub subject that are unusual.

As for following Stevennix2001...I will keep following him and will let you know if he does anything worth while....lol.

oh contrare-you have three to go-you are at 97 hubs. There is an accolade for 100 hubs. But I know what you mean wit hviews. 100, 10,000, 50,000, 100,000 and then not until 1,000,00. :)

p.s. I'm glad you are abandoning the polls.

Hey Flora....actually you do not get a 50,000 accolade....it goes from 10,000 to 100,000....no stopping at 50,000.....so I figured I would celebrate 50K since hub pages was not going to....but I will get one when I reach 100 hubs.
