Hub Update: After waiting for 30 years, Meryl Streep, wins her third Oscar® overall and her second Best Actress Oscar® for The Iron Lady. Statisically speaking this was one of the worst movies in which an actress won the Best Actress award. With a critical and audience rating of 58% and a box office total of less than 30 million, Streep's performance has earned a ranking of 84th of 85 Best Actress winners. 2/25/2012.

This hub will look at all 85 winners of the Best Actress award. Each performance was ranked by many statistical categories which include box office results, critical opinion, audience opinion, and award recognition. A perfect score would be 100.....a couple of these performances almost reached that lofty level.

This is actually the third part in my Oscar® winning series. You can check out parts one and parts two by following the following links.

Part One: Best Picture Oscar Winners

Part Two: Best Actor Oscar Winners

So which Best Actress performance do you think ranks the highest? Could it be a FBI agent tracking down a serial killer? A magical nanny? A pregnant police officer solving a murder? A woman who takes in a stranger who becomes a famous football player? The meanest nurse of all time? A southern belle? or an actress playing a famous country singer? Well all you have to do is scan down to find out your answer.

Sandra Bullock's in 2009's The Blindside....the 9th biggest box office hit for Best Actress winning movies....it earned 272.70 million in 2011 dollars.

Interesting Facts About Oscar® Winning Best Actresses.

1. Katharine Hepburn easily leads the way with four Best Actress Oscar® wins. No other actress has more than two Best Actress Oscar® wins.

2. Eleven actresses have won the award twice....they are: Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Ingrid Bergman, Sally Field, Hilary Swank, Glenda Jackson, Vivien Leigh, Luise Rainer, Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda and Jodie Foster.

3. Meryl Streep holds the record for most Best Actress nominations. She currently sits at 13 nominations, but she looks like a strong possibility for her 14th nomination for this year's The Iron Lady. It has been 30 years since her last Best Actress Oscar® win....1982's Sophie's Choice.

4. The oldest winner was Jessica Tandy for Driving Miss Daisy, she was 80. The youngest winner was Marlee Matlin for Children of a Lesser God, she was 21.

5. Speaking of Marlee Matlin.... a thought I have had in my brain for the last 25 years. When Marlee Matlin won her Oscar®....the person that announced the winner was her boyfriend at the time, William Hurt. What do you think are the chances that love made William Hurt call her name even if she was not the winner...and then the two guys(Price Waterhouse) who knew the truth let it slide because it was such an emotional win?

6. In 1968 there was a tie for Best Actress, as Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl and Katharine Hepburn for The Lion in Winter shared the award that year.

7. Only actresses have won the award back to back. Luise Rainer in 1937 and 1938 and Katharine Hepburn in 1967 and 1968. I do not think Natalie Portman will be joining this list when the winner is announced in February.

8. Glenda Jackson who won the award in 1970 and 1973 has since retired from movies and has been a Member of Parliament since 1992.

9. Luise Rainer who won the award in 1937 and 1938 is the oldest living Oscar® winner. She will turn 102 on Thursday January 12th.

10. To date I have seen 78 of the 84 Best Actress Oscar® winning movies. I would say my top five would be Louis Fletcher in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Ingrid Bergman in Gaslight, Charlize Theron in Monster, Sissy Spacek in Coal Miner's Daughter and Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose.

I'll never get to sleep if I read this and properly comment on your hub now. But I will say this. I have seen over 50% of the total films, and not all of the movies I have seen were made before I was born. I have seen 48 of them which is 57% of them. My lowest ranked film is #79 - Dangerous, which means I have seen 60% of the top 80.

I have seen 68% of the top 40 films (27).

I have seen 15 of the top 20 which is 75% of them. That is my highest total of any grouping.

I have seen 6 of the the top ten.

I will discuss which films these are and what I loved/hated tomorrow.

Hey Flora...I can not believe you picked sleep over leaving a more detailed comment....lol. 48 is a pretty impressive number....I am only missing 6 of the movies....they are Room at the Top(very hard one to find), To Each His Own(my mom taped it for me....now all I have to do is find a VHS player), The Sin of Madelon Claudet, Coquette, Dangerous and Min and Bill(the highest rated one I have not seen). I look forward to your comments. Interesting timing once again...I think it is awesome that Luise Rainer will be 102 tomorrow....maybe she reads the internet every day.

Hey AnkushKohli.... well The Silence of the Lambs and Jodie Foster almost knocked off Vivien Leigh and Gone With The Wind....so it is up there with some quality movies...thanks for stopping by.

I'm hoping Meryl Streep takes it this year. As much as I admire the work of Natalie Portman and Sandra Bullock, I feel like the Academy was trying to court the popular attention by picking box office successes. That being said, I'm interested to see how The Help does in the Oscar race too. Interesting Hub, voted up!

Interesting list, I think my favorite has to be Julia Roberts in Erin Brockvich or Helen Mirren in The Queen. My wife made watch both of them, and I remember how much I liked them. Congrats on 100K and I enjoyed your Jeff Bridges hub. There I caught up on all your latest hubs.

Bruce, I received an email notification for this hub 13 minutes ago. And you published it hours ago! I don't understand why notifications aren't instant here, I get email notices for comments in my hub up to 2 hours after someone posts them, so by the time I reply other people have commented too. On my forum email notifications are almost instantaneous, which is how it should be.

Sorry for the rant Bruce I just had to get it off my chest.

Another interesting film hub, packed with facts and figures, good work my friend.

Not sure Liza Minnelli should be in the top 10 with all those great ladies but she was fun in Arthur. :)

My Sandra's favourite actress is Jodie Foster I don't think she's even heard of Vivien Leigh [cue Flora groaning]. ;)

Okay let's see... Katharine the Great isn't even in the top 10. [bites fist] :)

You're well ahead of me here Bruce I've only seen 43 of the 84 films you've listed. I guess the subject matter of most of these didn't interest me much.

I've seen 7 from the box office chart and 8 from the critics chart.

My favourite is probably Vivien leigh as the awful Scarlett O'Hara, I actually felt sorry for the silly girl. Fantastic performance by Viv. Scarlett is arguably the greatest and most famous female role in Hollywood history.

Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs was great too.

Looking forward to seeing Meryl Streep as the much hated ex-PM and Michelle Williams as Norma Jean Baker.

Voted Up, Useful and Interesting.

Hey Alecia....thanks for stopping by...I think Meryl Streep's reward will be her 14th nomination for Best Actress(17th overall)...but The Iron Lady is getting some pretty bad reviews...and I heard they included a imaginary friend for the Prime Minister...what is up with that? I do agree that the Oscar voters are trying to appear hipper...if Kristen Wiig gets a nomination for Bridesmaids then I think it is official..they have gone too far. I do think Viola Davis has an excellent chance for not only a nomination but a Oscar win. I will be doing an Oscar nomination prediction hub in about a week...and she will be one of the sure shots for a nomination.

Hey Steve....sorry for the delay in HubPage notification...but I hope your rant helped....it can not hurt...lol.

Thanks for the compliment...I agree Liza Minnelli seems out of place with all of these great actresses...but she did hit a massive homerun with Cabaret. As for the Great Kate...she is everywhere in this hub...and her finally rankings are pretty good as well....12th, 18th, 30th....and we will not mention Morning Glory which is all the way down in 70th spot. Amazingly she has two of the Top 5 box office movies and none of the critic audience Top 10...I would have thought the opposite would have happened.

So I assume you are happy with the Top Two....and I think Nurse Ratchett in third place is in a pretty good spot as well.....she did after all win out over Jack in the movie...maybe he should not have messed with her...lol.

So is the UK excited about The Iron Lady? I was until I read about the whole imaginary friend part. Thanks as always for stopping by...and surely Sandra is familiar with Scarlett O'Hara.

Not sure if she is familar with Scarlett, Bruce. I don't think she's watched that film with me, it's too old!

Streep is getting good reviews as Thatcher but some of the MP's and the Prime Minister have criticised the film for showing her suffering with dementia, especially since she's still alive.

I'm happy with your top 3 moviescore actresses films, not sure about Liza and Julia Andrews though, wait a sec Julia Andrews? Julia? JULIA! You've got Julie Roberts on your mind eh? ;)

Hey Steve....wow she might be the only woman on Earth not familiar with Gone With The Wind. Thanks for the catch on Julia Andrews...the error has been fixed. I thought everybody had Julie Roberts on their mind....lol.

Hey Cogerson, as you know I have a VHS player - come over any time and watch the movie - I would watch it with you - that was a good movie...a good love story...I am impressed with this HUB - such interesting facts. I have seen quite a few of these movies but not all once again. Are you going with all the actors who won OSCARS too? GOOD WORK ONCE AGAIN. As far as notification if you do not call me I get notification in my JUNK MAIL...do not know why. I pulled up this HUB in the Junk Mail - you called me and told me it was out there. GOOD WORK SON, BRUCE, COGERSON...

Hey BERN1960.....thanks for the offer for the VCR usage....I will remember that when I will finally watch To Each His Own...I just saw the VHS tape you taped for me when we were putting the DVD rack back after the Christmas tree went away. I appreciate your comment and your compliment...sorry one of your favorites ended up being so low on the charts. I Want To Live came in at #48 which is just a little above average...but all of these movies are pretty good. I have already done all the actors...the link is at the top of the hub.

Hi Cogerson, I've seen 64 of these movies (which I was quite shocked at!). My faves would be Frances McDormant in 'Fargo', Elizabeth Taylor in 'Butterfield 8', Katharine Hepburn in 'The Lion In Winter', Vivien Leigh in GWTW but she's also great in Streetcar Named Desire. I hope Viola Davis gets the nod this year, she is excellent in The Help. Meryl's imaginary friend is Mrs Thatcher's dead husband Denis' ghost. Meryl looks and sounds amazing as Mrs Thatcher. Great hub, voted up, very interesting.

Okay, this comment will say what the films are that I have seen, like etc.

Do not ask me for the order I prefer for a top ten of mine.. too hard. However, I would say that the *best* performance is indeed Leigh in Gone With the Wind, although my *favourite* top ten performance is Hepburn in Roman Holiday followed closely by Andrews in Mary Poppins. I watch them more frequently.

Top Ten Box Office: I have seen 6:

in order listed:

Gone With The Wind

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

Funny Girl

On Golden Pond

Mrs. Miniver

Terms of endearment

By the way - I am unsure how to list Gayner as I saw Sunrise but not Seventh Heaven .5? no. I'll choose one or the other, so do count that in my overall tally.

Back to Top tens

Top Ten Critics: I have seen 7 of them, #4-10:

It Happened One Night

Gone With the wind

Roman Holiday

Sunrise (see note above)

Mary Poppins

A Streetcar named Desire

The Heiress

And the top movie Score ten in order: I have seen 6:

Gone with the wind

Mrs. Miniver

mary Poppins

Cabaret

Terms of Endearment

Driving Miss daisy

Because the top twenty do represent my highest percentage I will state which ones I have seen from #11-20 (won't do that for all 48 I've seen)

From 11-20, my favourite movie is Funny Girl. The best of the movie performances I have seen, in my opinion, is again, Vivian Leigh - this time in A streetcar named Desire.

Here are the films I have seen from #11-20:

Funny Girl

On Golden Pond

as Good As It Gets

Johnny Belinda

The Great Zigfield

Guess who's Coming to Dinner

A Streetcar Named Desire

The Country Girl.

The earliest film I've seen, is as stated, Sunrise.

The most recent film I've seen is Walk the line.

Top ten critics: In the order you list them:

Wow Jools99..64 is pretty impressive. That would be good enough for second place in the little tally count Flora, Steve and myself do.....Cogerson 78, Jools99 64, Flora 48, Steve 43. I guess the thing that I do not understand is why the producers of The Iron Lady would talk about her illness when they is so much more they could cover. When I heard about this movie I was not thinking it would be a movie about dementia.

I think right now Viola Davis is the leading contender, with Streep being the second choice...too bad so many people think the performance is great but the movie is bad. Thanks for stopping by.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 4 months ago

Hey Flora....Janet Gaynor won her Oscar for three performances...I could only find information for two of the three movies.....so I took the average for her total. Glad to see you are happy with the top choice....one of the best ways to score high in my system is to win an Oscar for acting in a movie that wins the Best Picture Oscar. I think the first four movies fall into that category.

Roman Holiday ranked so low because it was not much of a box office winner way back in 1953/1954...but it is ranked 6th according to critics and audiences.

Sounds like I should do a hub on Vivien Leigh.....I like GWTW much more than Streetcar....I find Streetcar very hard to finish...not sure if it is Brando's acting or just the story.

I think at some point you are going to have to watch One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest....most of the movie is pretty uplifting with only the last 15 minutes being sad...and Louise Fletcher is awesome as the evil, just doing my job nurse. Thanks as always for contributing to my hub.

Bruce, I don't think The Iron Lady is just about Lady Thatcher's dementia, it's just the framing story. There are flashbacks to her in Parliament, making decisions, arguing, going to war against Argentina, watching Out of Africa etc etc ;)

Hi Bruce; After getting over my anger that Myrna Loy never won an Oscar (Arrgh!!!) I enjoyed looking over the list of great actresses. Katherine Hepburn remains the queen, even though none of her films scored on top of the list. (I'm still amazed that Streisand tied with her for "Funny girl". Hepburn was incredible in "the Lion in winter".)

I hadn't realized that it has been so long since streep won. She is nominated so often, I forgot that she hasn't won in a long time. that has to be frustrting for such a great actress, to keep getting nominated and losing.

Vivian Leigh is on top of the list, I see. Actually, most people today don't remember her as anything but Scarlet 'O'Hara. The average person probably can't name another Vivian Leigh film.

I'm not in the mood right now to count how many of these films I've seen but I know I've seen most of them.

Another fun and interesting hub,

Rob

Hey Steve..good to know that the Iron Lady is more than her dealing with her illness....every review I read on the movie seems to concentrate on the illness more than the things she accomplished. It opens here in the states tomorrow...it will be interesting to see if Streep's new found box office power will turn this movie into a box office hit. My magic crystal ball says no.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 4 months ago

Hey Jools...Mrs. Miniver is a pretty good movie....and it only adds to your impressive tally. La Vie En Rose is not exactly a fun movie to watch. But Marion Cotillard is simply awesome in the role. Thanks for the revisit.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 4 months ago

Hey Rob...thanks for the visit. I agree it is a shame that Myrna Loy is not on this list. 30 years without an Oscar win for Streep....she picked up 2 wins in 4 years....and nothing since. I think the Oscar voters are thinking they need to give her another award...and this could be the year.

As for Vivien Leigh....I think most could get Streetcar as well....but other than those two movies...I agree they pretty much know very little about her career....which I most admit...I do not think I could name 5 of her movies myself.

Thanks for the comment and the compliment.....I want to get the directors done as well....but I think my next hub will concentrate on predictions for the nominations....I did a hub last year(I can not believe it has been a year)...and got 89% of my guesses correct...it should be interesting.

I read a biography of Vivien Leigh about 20 years ago and she was a fascinating woman but very tormented. She suffered from crippling manic depression and suffered with mental illness for most of her adult life, even having electric shock therapy in the early sixties. She died fairly young as a result of complications arising from her having tuberculosis as a child aged 53. She didn't make too many movies but one of 'em was an absolute corker!

I am about to make an important step in my Hubpages career. I am about to be banned by the forums and perhaps kicked off the site. I will start copying my work here onto my computer so that I can publish it somewhere else if need be. I will miss you if this happens, but hey, I am making pennies here anyway.

Cogerson profile image

Hey Flora....having read the forums you posted at and the hub that started the conversation....I do not see anything that you wrote that would be something to be banned for. Differences of opinions are what makes HubPages float...plus you did not use profanity....threaten anybody...so hopefully this will pass without further incident. That being said....backing up your work is a pretty good idea as HubPages can pretty much throw anybody out anytime they want to. I will keep an eye for you but I really believe your HubPage career has many more chapters to go.

Hey Jools99....I have read the same information about Leigh....from an outsiders view....it had to be heartbreaking for Olivier to watch her fall apart like that....but he did try and stay by her side until the sad end. Usually when I do a hub, I try and stay away from the negative side...I think that will be very difficult when I do a Vivien Leigh hub.

Hey mckbirdbks....thanks for the great compliment. As for Streep, I think she is doing just fine....after all she does hold the record for most nominations....and she does have two Oscars that can help hold up some books on a book shelf....lol. His first win was as Best Supporting Actress.

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 4 months ago

Hey Brianlokker....let's see the other nominees were Jane Fonda for The Morning After, Sissy Spacek for Crimes of the Heart, Sigourney Weaver for Aliens and Kathleen Turner for Peggy Sue Got Married. I think Weaver and Turner were the front runners...according to Matlin...her win was too much for Hurt to handle....because he could not believe it only took a short time to win an Oscar when it took him so many years to win his Oscar.....so if he did it for love....jealousy eventually ruined that relationship....thanks for checking out that question....I think that would make a good movie..if he really did it.

An engaging read on Oscar winning actresses and statistics based on critic-audience ratings, your movie score, oscar nom/oscar win and inflated box office ratings. I correctly guessed that this time Meryl streep win her Oscar hattrick and she did! She is a versatile actress. I observed that Viven leigh topped in most of the cases ( in about top 5). She performed well in the classic 'Gone with the wind' as a proud, arrogant and too ambitious Scarlett. My favorite actress in general from the above mentioned list is Kate Winslet.

U did a great job in this entertaining hub. Rated it interesting. Vote up.

Thanks for stopping by ishwaryaa22....and I glad you enjoyed reading my Best Actress Oscar hub. I was surprised when her name was called....no doubt she is a great actress....but the movie has not been received very well.

I enjoy Kate Winslet movies myself...and I think Vivien Leigh is somewhat underrated....but she has two of the greatest performances by a actress ever with Gone With The Wind and Streetcar Named Desire. Thanks for the votes.
