Hub Update: After waiting for 30 years, Meryl Streep, wins her third Oscar® overall and her second Best Actress Oscar® for The Iron Lady. Interesting Facts About Oscar® Winning Best Actresses.
1. Katharine Hepburn easily leads the way with four Best Actress Oscar® wins. No other actress has more than two Best Actress Oscar® wins.
2. Eleven actresses have won the award twice....they are: Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Ingrid Bergman, Sally Field, Hilary Swank, Glenda Jackson, Vivien Leigh, Luise Rainer, Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda and Jodie Foster.
3. Meryl Streep holds the record for most Best Actress nominations. She currently sits at 13 nominations, but she looks like a strong possibility for her 14th nomination for this year's The Iron Lady. It has been 30 years since her last Best Actress Oscar® win....1982's Sophie's Choice.
4. The oldest winner was Jessica Tandy for Driving Miss Daisy, she was 80. The youngest winner was Marlee Matlin for Children of a Lesser God, she was 21.
5. Speaking of Marlee Matlin.... a thought I have had in my brain for the last 25 years. When Marlee Matlin won her Oscar®....the person that announced the winner was her boyfriend at the time, William Hurt. What do you think are the chances that love made William Hurt call her name even if she was not the winner...and then the two guys(Price Waterhouse) who knew the truth let it slide because it was such an emotional win?
6. In 1968 there was a tie for Best Actress, as Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl and Katharine Hepburn for The Lion in Winter shared the award that year.
7. Only actresses have won the award back to back. Luise Rainer in 1937 and 1938 and Katharine Hepburn in 1967 and 1968. I do not think Natalie Portman will be joining this list when the winner is announced in February.
8. Glenda Jackson who won the award in 1970 and 1973 has since retired from movies and has been a Member of Parliament since 1992.
9. Luise Rainer who won the award in 1937 and 1938 is the oldest living Oscar® winner. She will turn 102 on Thursday January 12th.
10. To date I have seen 78 of the 84 Best Actress Oscar® winning movies. I would say my top five would be Louis Fletcher in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Ingrid Bergman in Gaslight, Charlize Theron in Monster, Sissy Spacek in Coal Miner's Daughter and Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose.

Silence of the Lambs remains to be one of my favorite movies.
I'm hoping Meryl Streep takes it this year. As much as I admire the work of Natalie Portman and Sandra Bullock, I feel like the Academy was trying to court the popular attention by picking box office successes. That being said, I'm interested to see how The Help does in the Oscar race too. Interesting Hub, voted up!
Interesting list, I think my favorite has to be Julia Roberts in Erin Brockvich or Helen Mirren in The Queen. My wife made watch both of them, and I remember how much I liked them. Congrats on 100K and I enjoyed your Jeff Bridges hub. There I caught up on all your latest hubs.
Bruce, I received an email notification for this hub 13 minutes ago. And you published it hours ago! I don't understand why notifications aren't instant here, I get email notices for comments in my hub up to 2 hours after someone posts them, so by the time I reply other people have commented too. On my forum email notifications are almost instantaneous, which is how it should be.
Sorry for the rant Bruce I just had to get it off my chest.
Another interesting film hub, packed with facts and figures, good work my friend.
Not sure Liza Minnelli should be in the top 10 with all those great ladies but she was fun in Arthur. :)
My Sandra's favourite actress is Jodie Foster I don't think she's even heard of Vivien Leigh [cue Flora groaning]. ;)
Okay let's see... Katharine the Great isn't even in the top 10. [bites fist] :)
You're well ahead of me here Bruce I've only seen 43 of the 84 films you've listed. I guess the subject matter of most of these didn't interest me much.
I've seen 7 from the box office chart and 8 from the critics chart.
My favourite is probably Vivien leigh as the awful Scarlett O'Hara, I actually felt sorry for the silly girl. Fantastic performance by Viv. Scarlett is arguably the greatest and most famous female role in Hollywood history.
Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs was great too.
Looking forward to seeing Meryl Streep as the much hated ex-PM and Michelle Williams as Norma Jean Baker.
Voted Up, Useful and Interesting.
Not sure if she is familar with Scarlett, Bruce. I don't think she's watched that film with me, it's too old!
Streep is getting good reviews as Thatcher but some of the MP's and the Prime Minister have criticised the film for showing her suffering with dementia, especially since she's still alive.
I'm happy with your top 3 moviescore actresses films, not sure about Liza and Julia Andrews though, wait a sec Julia Andrews? Julia? JULIA! You've got Julie Roberts on your mind eh? ;)
Hey Cogerson, as you know I have a VHS player - come over any time and watch the movie - I would watch it with you - that was a good movie...a good love story...I am impressed with this HUB - such interesting facts. I have seen quite a few of these movies but not all once again. Are you going with all the actors who won OSCARS too? GOOD WORK ONCE AGAIN. As far as notification if you do not call me I get notification in my JUNK MAIL...do not know why. I pulled up this HUB in the Junk Mail - you called me and told me it was out there. GOOD WORK SON, BRUCE, COGERSON...
Hi Cogerson, I've seen 64 of these movies (which I was quite shocked at!). My faves would be Frances McDormant in 'Fargo', Elizabeth Taylor in 'Butterfield 8', Katharine Hepburn in 'The Lion In Winter', Vivien Leigh in GWTW but she's also great in Streetcar Named Desire. I hope Viola Davis gets the nod this year, she is excellent in The Help. Meryl's imaginary friend is Mrs Thatcher's dead husband Denis' ghost. Meryl looks and sounds amazing as Mrs Thatcher. Great hub, voted up, very interesting.
Okay, this comment will say what the films are that I have seen, like etc.
Do not ask me for the order I prefer for a top ten of mine.. too hard. However, I would say that the *best* performance is indeed Leigh in Gone With the Wind, although my *favourite* top ten performance is Hepburn in Roman Holiday followed closely by Andrews in Mary Poppins. I watch them more frequently.
Top Ten Box Office: I have seen 6:
in order listed:
Gone With The Wind
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
Funny Girl
On Golden Pond
Mrs. Miniver
Terms of endearment
By the way - I am unsure how to list Gayner as I saw Sunrise but not Seventh Heaven .5? no. I'll choose one or the other, so do count that in my overall tally.
Back to Top tens
Top Ten Critics: I have seen 7 of them, #4-10:
It Happened One Night
Gone With the wind
Roman Holiday
Sunrise (see note above)
Mary Poppins
A Streetcar named Desire
The Heiress
And the top movie Score ten in order: I have seen 6:
Gone with the wind
Mrs. Miniver
mary Poppins
Cabaret
Terms of Endearment
Driving Miss daisy
Because the top twenty do represent my highest percentage I will state which ones I have seen from #11-20 (won't do that for all 48 I've seen)
From 11-20, my favourite movie is Funny Girl. The best of the movie performances I have seen, in my opinion, is again, Vivian Leigh - this time in A streetcar named Desire.
Here are the films I have seen from #11-20:
Funny Girl
On Golden Pond
as Good As It Gets
Johnny Belinda
The Great Zigfield
Guess who's Coming to Dinner
A Streetcar Named Desire
The Country Girl.
The earliest film I've seen, is as stated, Sunrise.
The most recent film I've seen is Walk the line.
Top ten critics: In the order you list them:
Bruce, I don't think The Iron Lady is just about Lady Thatcher's dementia, it's just the framing story. There are flashbacks to her in Parliament, making decisions, arguing, going to war against Argentina, watching Out of Africa etc etc ;)
Just realised I'd forgotten about Greer Garson being in my list - Mrs Miniver is one of my favourite movies. I am going to see La Vie En Rose when I get a chance, looks interesting.
Hi Bruce; After getting over my anger that Myrna Loy never won an Oscar (Arrgh!!!) I enjoyed looking over the list of great actresses. Katherine Hepburn remains the queen, even though none of her films scored on top of the list. (I'm still amazed that Streisand tied with her for "Funny girl". Hepburn was incredible in "the Lion in winter".)
I hadn't realized that it has been so long since streep won. She is nominated so often, I forgot that she hasn't won in a long time. that has to be frustrting for such a great actress, to keep getting nominated and losing.
Vivian Leigh is on top of the list, I see. Actually, most people today don't remember her as anything but Scarlet 'O'Hara. The average person probably can't name another Vivian Leigh film.
I'm not in the mood right now to count how many of these films I've seen but I know I've seen most of them.
Another fun and interesting hub,
Rob
I read a biography of Vivien Leigh about 20 years ago and she was a fascinating woman but very tormented. She suffered from crippling manic depression and suffered with mental illness for most of her adult life, even having electric shock therapy in the early sixties. She died fairly young as a result of complications arising from her having tuberculosis as a child aged 53. She didn't make too many movies but one of 'em was an absolute corker!
I am about to make an important step in my Hubpages career. I am about to be banned by the forums and perhaps kicked off the site. I will start copying my work here onto my computer so that I can publish it somewhere else if need be. I will miss you if this happens, but hey, I am making pennies here anyway.
Yes, Steve thought the same thing. I only wondered because I wrote in capital letters...
There is a question in the questions and answer section about whether or not stay at home Dads are lazy. As a stay at home Dad - go getem!
Great as always, keep up the great work. Voted Up, Useful, Awesome, and Interesting
I have mentioned you and Steve on the Pay It Forward forum thread all about good will and everything positive. You mention favourite hubber(s) of yours whom you want people to read. You tell them and they in turn Pay it forward by mentioning someone they like to read. Your turn, Bruce!
Cogerson, your Hubs are becoming 'Movie Central' everything you could possibly want to know about a very interesesting industry. This hub was packed with information.
Left the hub feeling a little sad for Meryl Streep.
Great hub with very interesting lists as usual. I'm intrigued by your question about Marlee Matlin's win for Children of a Lesser God ... who were the other nominees?
Cogerson, great hub and love the statistics! Will be following you for sure!
Congrats on your Oscar! (Your One Year accolade)! My money is on Sandra Bullock for the gold!! :)
An engaging read on Oscar winning actresses and statistics based on critic-audience ratings, your movie score, oscar nom/oscar win and inflated box office ratings. I correctly guessed that this time Meryl streep win her Oscar hattrick and she did! She is a versatile actress. I observed that Viven leigh topped in most of the cases ( in about top 5). She performed well in the classic 'Gone with the wind' as a proud, arrogant and too ambitious Scarlett. My favorite actress in general from the above mentioned list is Kate Winslet.
U did a great job in this entertaining hub. Rated it interesting. Vote up.
As always, a great hub Cogerson! Best Actress performances that stand out for me are Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind, Charlize Theron for Monster, Hillary Swank for Boys Don't Cry, and Meryl Streep for Sophie's Choice.
Cogerson, we can wait for your hubs for best director, best support actress, actor, whenever you get around to it! 2013 isn't too far, you know! LOL! Love your writing!

I'll never get to sleep if I read this and properly comment on your hub now. But I will say this. I have seen over 50% of the total films, and not all of the movies I have seen were made before I was born. I have seen 48 of them which is 57% of them. My lowest ranked film is #79 - Dangerous, which means I have seen 60% of the top 80.
I have seen 68% of the top 40 films (27).
I have seen 15 of the top 20 which is 75% of them. That is my highest total of any grouping.
I have seen 6 of the the top ten.
I will discuss which films these are and what I loved/hated tomorrow.
