Anthony Hopkins Movies- Best to Worst-with Adjusted Box Office Results.
82Anthony Hopkins in his #1 movie Silence of the Lambs(Movie Score 94.95)
I have received not one, not two but three requests to do a hub on Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins, best known as Anthony Hopkins. The first time I noticed Anthony Hopkins was in his role in A Bridge Too Far in 1977. In a movie loaded with stars, I thought his role as Colonel Frost was one of the best parts in the movie. His most famous role is playing Hannibal Lecter in the Silence of the Lambs trilogy. He has appeared in close to 60 movies since 1968. He has received three Oscar nominations for Best Actor(Silence of the Lambs, Remains of the Day, Nixon) and one Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor(Amistad). He won the Oscar for Best Actor in Silence of the Lambs. That role actually comes in at #12 on my Top 25 Movie Performances hub.
Anthony Hopkins has made some great movies, but has also made some really bad movies. Before doing this Hopkins hub, the leaders with movies with Movie Scores under 20.00 points were Robert Downey, Jr. with 13 movies and Michael Caine with 12 movies. Sir Anthony Hopkins is now the new leader with 17 movies earning less than 20.00 points.
Anthony Hopkins has five future projects currently listed at IMDB....he is currently in the superhero movie Thor which is playing theaters right now.
#1 Silence of the Lambs
The Best Of Anthony Hopkins.
Anthony Hopkins played Hannibal Lecter for the first time in Silence of the Lambs in 1991. The film won five major Academy Awards: Best Picture. Best Actor(Hopkins), Best Actress(Jodie Foster), Best Director(Jonathan Demme) and Best Adapted Screenplay(Ted Tally). Only two other movies have accomplished this Oscar sweep....those two movies are 1934's It Happened One Night and 1975's One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
#2 Thor....starring Anthony Hopkins as King Odin.
The Best of Anthony Hopkins.
2011 could be called the "Year of the Superhero". Many movies featuring comic book superheros were released in 2011. None did better at the box office or were received by critics and audiences than Thor. Anthony Hopkins played King Odin, Thor's father, who banished Thor from their home, Asgard. Thor grossed over 181.00 million in the United States and over 440.00 million in worldwide grosses. It has been announced that there will be a Thor sequel in 2013, it has not been announced if Sir Anthony Hopkins will be returning to his role as King Odin.
#3 Bram Stoker's Dracula
The Best of Anthony Hopkins.
Anthony Hopkins starred as Professor Abraham Van Helsing in the 1992 blockbuster Bram Stoker's Dracula. Dracula earned 158.80 million in 2011 inflated dollars, which would be Hopkins fourth biggest blockbuster. The movie also stars Gary Oldman as Count Dracula, Winona Ryder as Mina Harker and Keanu Reeves as Jonathan Harker. The Legendary Francis Ford Coppola produced and directed this movie. Bram Stoker's Dracula received four Academy Award nominations, it won three Academy Awards.
#4 Lion In The Winter
The Best of Anthony Hopkins.
Anthony Hopkins played Prince Richard the Lionheart in 1968's The Lion in Winter. This was one of Hopkins first ever movie roles. The Lion in Winter had stars, box office success and award recognition. Katherine Hepburn, Peter O'Toole and a very young Timothy Dalton were Hopkins co-stars. The movie earned 120.80 million in 2011 inflated dollars. It received 7 Academy nominations, including a Best Picture nomination and Katherine Hepburn's third win as Best Actress. The highlight of the film has to be Peter O'Toole's performance as King Henry II.
#5 Hannibal
The Best of Anthony Hopkins.
Anthony Hopkins returns in the sequel to Silence of the Lambs. This would be the second of three times he would play everybody's favorite serial killer Hannibal Lecter. Julianne Moore co-stars, taking over for Jodie Foster in the role of Clarice Starling. The Ridley Scott directed film, did great at the box office(232.10 inflated 2011 dollars), but was not as well received by critics and audiences. Did you know? Brian Cox was actually the first actor to play Hannibal Lecter in the 1986 movie Manhunter?
#6 The Mask of Zorro
The Best of Anthony Hopkins.
In a role originally meant for Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins played Don Diego De La Vega in 1998's The Mask of Zorro. In the movie Antonio Banderas plays Zorro while Catherine Zeta-Jones plays the love interest. The movie did very well at the box office and was well received by both audiences and critics. The Mask of Zorro earned two Academy Award nominations. A sequel without Anthony Hopkins did not fare very well.

Anthony Hopkins winning his Oscar for Silence of the Lambs.
The Worst of Anthony Hopkins.
.
The Bronze: Surviving Picasso(Movie Score 15.60)....one of the few James Ivory movies that is actually bad....Hopkins plays Pablo Picasso
RunnerUp: All the King's Men(Movie Score 14.03)....before its release there was serious Oscar talk for Best Picture.....with a critic/audience score of 36%....those dreams quickly ended
Winner: Slipstream(Movie Score 12.25)....not only did he star in this movie, but he is also the director....no box office and bad reviews earns the spot of worst film by Anthony Hopkins....that being said....I have never seen this movie....but I did read a positive review from fellow hubber Rick Rudd that makes me interested in seeing this movie....Rick's Slipstream review
Movie Score card for Silence of the Lambs
So what the heck are Movie Scores?
Essentially you take the reviews of the experts like Roger Ebert and Leonard Maltin, the scores from Rotten Tomatoes, the public opinion votes from Yahoo Movies and IMDB, and the box office information from Box Office Guru and Box Office Mojo. Movie Score takes all of these options and creates a mathematical equation that generates a score from 1 to 100. The higher the score the better the movie.

I forgot my manners. You have an opened invitation. :)
Yes me too! Personally one of my favourite Anthony Hopkins Movies is 'The Edge'. There is a great review of this at http://www.anthonyhopkinsmovies.com with all the pics and info about the making of the movie. Nice hub, and thanks for visiting mine.
Excellent actor! "The Lion in Winter" is one of the greatest movies ever. "Silence of the Lambs" was great too, but the sequel "Hannibal" was just awful! I really enjoyed his interpretation of Captain Bligh in "the Bounty" (he brought more substance and depth to the character than Charles Laughton's more evil version). His wacky version of Van Helsing in "Dracula" was a hoot!
I think "A Bridge Too far" was the first thing I saw him in, too. Of the Hopkins movies I've seen, I'd say "Freejack" was the worst, although "Hannibal" is pretty close to the bottom, too.
Peace,
Rob.
Another useful and well written Hub!
I've always thought of Anthony Hopkins as one of the most intense and even fierce actors out there. Awesome article. Voted up.
Thanks for writing an Anthony Hopkins hub. He is really awesome! I do have to agree Silence of the Lambs is his best movie.
i am a big fan of him i especially like his perform in hannibal series thanks for sharing voted up
"I hope never to see Fletcher Christian again. Unless it is to see him hanged."
I watched The Bounty recently, another superb performance by the great Anthony Hopkins.
Another excellent hub Cogerson. Looking at Hopkins top 10 highest scoring films I have 9 of them on DVD, I gave Remains of the Day a miss I could never get into those Merchant-Ivory snobby Brits having a tea party sort of films. ;)
Silence of the Lambs deserves to be no.1. Hopkins was hammy in Dracula but I enjoyed the film and bought it on Blu-ray. The Edge is excellent and worth checking out, music by the maestro Jerry Goldsmith. I haven't seen The Elephant Man in years, I should pick it up on Blu. Incredible film.
Voted up and useful!
Cogerson, this hub is fab and shibby. I love the chart, timeless and evergreen for sure. I also enjoy Anthony Hopkins and his role in lector is also one of my favs. I think I am still in surfer world. Aloha. voted up twice, is that possible?
Anthony Hopkins is a wonderful actor. Have enjoyed many of his films. The Elephant Man was such a sensative role. Must admit I have never seen Silence of the Lambs...The Mask of Zorro was very good too. Your HUBS are very informative - thank you...The Edge was on TV the other day - shot in Alaska - enjoyed seeing it as my grandson lives up there on the base - he is in the Air Force. Lots of snow...
Great hub, you are right his great movies are countered by many not so good movies, I have not heard of lots of his movies.
Thank you for this great hub. He's one of my favorite actors!
Excellent hub, voted up. Informative. I love Anthony Hopkins.
I most be in the minority, I have never really been a fan of his movies, I will say that The Edge is actually pretty good, I however have not enjoyed any of the Hannibal movies at all.
Great Job, Great Facts, and Great List. Lots of movies I must now see. Dracula being the first.
Silence of the Lamb and Hannibal and that whole series of movies scare me. I am not a big fan of Anthony Hopkins, but I am a big fan of yours and I will read anything by you. I know I will learn some new things. Thanks for a well put together hub as usual. Rated up and useful.
Thanks for this mouth watering hub, i'm a massive fan of Sir Anthony. He was brilliant as Hannibal Lecter, but my favourite performance of his was in The Remains Of The Day when he played a Butler. It was one of the best, most realistic performances ever. He was also great in Fracture and The World's Fastest Indian. Most actors have movies that bomb, but not many reach the heights that this great actor achieved. Cheers Mr Cogerson, great hub.
Great article, I see all his Hannibal the Cannibal movies are in the top 10, I agree with that. I think Remains of the Day should be a little higher
I agree with you, I thought the Hannibal in Manhunter was better than the Hopkins Hannibal. My favorite Hopkins movies are Meet Joe Black and Wolfman. Thanks for posting this hub.
In the movie The Silence of the Lambs, a series of murders are committed by an unidentified killer dubbed "Buffalo Bill" who skins his victims. Eventually, at one stage while carrying out an autopsy of one of the victims, the investigators notice the 'pupa' of a Death's-head Hawkmoth in the victim's throat. Through further investigations they zero in on the particular species, identified as Acherontia Styx, which is not a native in the US, implying that it must have been imported by the killer, a small yet crucial clue.
Anthony Hopkins played the role of Dr. Hannibal Lecter in an extraordinary manner! The movie released in 1991 perhaps, and after 20 years I can remember everything! Hats off to Anthony Hopkins, and hats off to you! - Andy
I just say A Bridge Too Far on tv, he is really young in that movie. But I agree his part is very good indeed.
Nice Hub Cogerson
A brilliant actor on stage and screen and even when the movies are bad he's still worth watching
A great hub. The first one I voted up. That is because I haven't thought about it, I usaully just comment. I need to go back and vote up some of your hubs I checked out earlier.
Lets look at Dr, Lector for a moment. He is the smartest man in the room and knows it.
He will still help the FBI not out of concern for the victems or because it's the right thing to do but just to show how smart he is.
He loves opera, art and other snobbish things like what wine goes with flava beans and liver.
And he kills people and eat them because they are RUDE.
Yet Sir Anthony Hopkins takes this arrogant, pretentious,Serial killer and makes the view ROOT for him! That is good acting.
As for Manhunter, I think Brian Cox portrayl of Dr Hannibal was chilling. He did a fantastic job as did William peterson as the FBI specialist and Tom Noonan as the killer. The Garden of Eden song playing in the background with the blind girl and the shootout was brillant. One of my favorite movies.
You are welcome. The problem with Fiennes Charactor was he was too handsome. Tom Noonan was sooo creepy. I remember Fiennes pumping iron to show how strong he was yet Noonan just entering a room his physical presence was intimadating. I could write a hub about Manhunter!
Maybe I will, thanks again.
Trivia: When Spartacus was restored, Olivier's dialogue in the bathing scene with Tony Curtis was lost. Hopkins recorded the dialogue for the restoration.
Well, my list of top 5 Anthony Hopkins is a bit bizarre. Despite my love of Hitchcock and the fact that I have seen them, I do not own my own copy of The Birds or Psycho as I am not a fan of horror films or anything particularily gory. As a result, I have not seen any of the Lector movies and have no intention of doing so. So here they are in alphabetical order:
A Bridge Too Far
Chaplin-seen because I love silent films, though I prefer Buster Keaton
Howards End
Remains of the Day
Shadowlands

Now this is the way to start my morning. I LOVE Anthony Hopkins! I think he's one of those fantastic actors who has never received adequate praise for his talent.
I should tell you...I have movie night at my house once a month. I've started a movie guide with your fantastic hubs. Thanks.
