Al Pacino Movies-His Best & Worst-With Box Office Results/Grosses-Through Jack & Jill.
79"Say hello to my little hub".....Al Pacino in his # 7 movie Scarface.
For some reason I have never been much of a Al Pacino fan. In case you have not figured it out, I watch lots of movies and going to the movies is one of my favorite things. I have been alive for Pacino's entire movie career, which began in 1969. Yet I have managed not to see one single movie of his at the movie theater. I blame James Caan for this Al Pacino freeze. Back in the day, James Caan was one of my favorite actors. The tv movie Brian's Song was the movie that got me on the Caan bandwagon. So when I finally got to watch the Godfather sometime in the late 1970s, I was pulling for Caan to become the next Godfather. I was very upset that poor Sonny(Caan) died at the toll plaza. Why could it not have been Michael(Pacino) that died at the toll plaza? I now have carried the Pacino grudge for over 30 years. So when I started to get numerous requests to do a Al Pacino hub, I kept putting those requests on the back burner. So KellyE1967, hinton1966 , BryRog57 and YankeesRule here is your Al Pacino hub.
Al Pacino is considered one of the greatest actors ever. Pacino has received eight Oscar nominations and thirteen Golden Globe nominations over his movie career. He won his only Oscar for 1992's Scent of a Woman. From 1972-1975 Pacino was Oscar nominated for an amazing four years in a row. He has picked up two Golden Globe wins ..... 1973's Serpico and Scent of a Woman. Pacino's most famous role is playing Michael Corleone in The Godfather trilogy. My personal favorite Pacino movies besides The Godfather of course, would be Scarface and Heat. Al Pacino fans can look forward to six new Pacino movies in the next 2 and half years. The most promising looks like Gotti: Three Generations, where he will play real life gangster Aniello Dellacroce.

Why use inflated vs actual grosses? The inflated gross makes it much easier to think about how an old movie would compare to todays movies. For example:1972's The Godfather grossed 133.69 million dollars according to Box Office Mojo and was ranked as the number one of all-time...even beating out Gone With The Wind. In 2010 a movie grossing 133.69 million would have only ranked 18th for the 2010 year. By knowing the box office gross and average ticket price....we can figure out tickets sold. The Godfather sold over 78 million tickets. By using tickets sold, we can figure out how much a old movie would have made today by multiplying tickets sold by average ticket price in 2010/11 . If The Godfather would have opened in 2010....it would have finished 1st for the year with 624.90 million in 2011 dollars. When you look at the all-time inflated box office champs....The Godfather is ranked #22 of all-time.

Al Pacino and Diane Keaton in The Godfather during the famous opening wedding scene.
The Best of Al Pacino.
#1 The Godfather(1972)
The Godfather is a classic movie in all regards. It had box office success(#22 of all-time), critical acclaim(won Best Picture Oscar) and memorable performances(Brando won Best Actor Oscar). The American Film Institute has it ranked as the number three movie of all-time...only behind Citizen Kane and Casablanca. IMDB has it ranked as the #2 movie of all-time, only behind Shawshank Redemption. Of the 5000 movies in my database it is the highest scoring movie. Check out Boomer Flick's Godfather hub for lots of great information on the Godfather movie.
Al Pacino as Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part II.
The Best of Al Pacino:
#2 The Godfather Part II(1974)
The greatest sequel to ever be made....although you could call it a prequel as well as a sequel. It chronicles the story of the Corleones following the events of the first film while also depicting the rise to power of Vito Corleone. Al Pacino returned as Michael Corleone, while relative newcomer Robert DeNiro played the younger version of Marlon Brando's character, Vito Corleone. The movie could not match the box office success of the original but it matched it with an Oscar for Best Picture as well Best Supporting Actor for DeNiro. It marked the first time two actors would win Oscars for playing the same character...as Brando had won Best Actor for playing Vito in The Godfather in the original.
Al Pacino in 1975's Dog Day Afternoon.
The Best of Al Pacino:
#3 Dog Day Afternoon(1975)
Al Pacino plays Sonny Wortzik in this film classic from the mid 1970s. Based on a true story about a failed bank robbery in Brooklyn. Have you ever notice how bank robberies never seem to go as planned in movies? Pacino received a Oscar nomination for the 4th year in a row for his portrayal of Sonny.. How about some love for the other robber....John Cazale. John Cazale only appeared in five movies in his career....and all five were nominated for Best Picture Oscars....those movies were The Godfather parts I and II, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deer Hunter. A perfect 5 for 5, nobody had done that before or since. He passed away from cancer after filming The Deer Hunter.
Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman ...the role that finally got him that Oscar win.
The Best of Al Pacino:
#4 Scent of a Woman(1992)
Al Pacino finally won his first Oscar playing Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman. Pacino's character, who lost his sight by juggling hand grenades and drinking alcohol, wants one final last blast weekend before "blowing his brains out". I think when the Academy awarded him this Oscar win, it was pretty much a career Oscar. The Academy did the same thing for Paul Newman when he won for The Color of Money. Both actors have better roles in better movies but they got honored for work that not many people would consider their best work.
Al Pacine as Big Boy Caprice in 1989's Dick Tracy.
The Best of Al Pacino:
#5 Dick Tracy(1990)
Warren Beatty produced, directed and starred in this movie based on the 1930s comic strip character of the same name. Al Pacino received a Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Alphonse "Big Boy" Caprice. Pacino/Big Boy's gang was made up of Dustin Hoffman, Mandy Patinkin, Paul Sorvino and James Caan. In this movie Caan dies when Pacino puts a bomb in Caan's car. The movie was a box office hit(Pacino's 3rd biggest hit) with 194.80 million in 2011 dollars. It received seven Oscar nominations.....winning three Oscars.
Al Pacino's 38 movies ranked by Movie Score. Movie Score is box office results + critical reception + award recognition. Perfect score would be 100.

Al Pacino is the 50th actor/actress to receive a Cogerson career review hub page. My Greatest Actors/Actress Table has two separate tables....the first table ranks the 50 actors using all of their movies. Al Pacino comes in at #21 on that table one spot ahead of Meryl Strep. Thank you for finally doing a Al Pacino hub. He has been a favorite of mine since I saw Frankie and Johnny and Sea of Love. He is awesome in The Godfather movies and his performance in Scarface is legendary. Thank you again.
Good Morning Cogerson:
I kinda like old Al. But it occurred to me as I read the hub that I really haven't seen many of his movies. It also occurs to me that what I generally pay attention to is the overall movie. I don't think I actually focus on the actor unless it is something I feel is truly outstanding. I really enjoyed "And Justice for All", but it's the theme of the movie that appeals to me. I remember the movie extremely well, but his acting...not so much. I'll have to start paying more attention.:)
up and very useful
Loved Pacino in Heat and Dog Day...saw Dog Day when I was fourteen years old.;)
I have enjoyed Al Pacino Movies very much. Sea Of Love was a very good movie, must have seen it at least six times. Good Acting. Heat with Robert DeNero was a very good movie with all the actors. I had hoped he would get away but alas he did not...having the two actors together was a good move. THANKS FOR THE HUB.
"Manolo shoot dat pis of chit" Pacino yeah, one of my favourites. The first two Godfathers are among my top favourite films. And I watched Scarface on video countless times with my mates during the 80's.
He was great in Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon, would those films have been as good if Dustin Hoffman was the lead? I don't think so.
I didn't like Cruising or Revolution but I did enjoy Sea of Love and he was hilarious in Dick Tracy.
Scent of a Woman isn't one of my favourites but I still cheered when he finally won an Oscar. Heat is a modern day classic.
An excellent hub Conanson. Voted Up and Useful.
"Attica!" "Attica" :)
Well you took long enough, I had just about given up on an Al hub. You can not blame Pacino for Caan's career failures. I can not imagine The Godfather with Sonny living and Michael dying. Great hub well worth the wait. Voted up up and up. Thanks for honoring our request.
Awesome hub Conan. I think I requested Al Pacino as soon as you sucked me into Hub Pages 3 months ago. Very informative hub. My favorites are many, I will not list the usual suspects, but I will mention that I like City Hall, Devil's Advocate and Donnie Brasco. Thank you for this hub. Voted up.
Great Hub, Thanks for finally getting it out. ROBWRITE, the writer of the hub clearly stated what you said in your comment,in the hub, that the oscar was a career oscar. Double Tap anyone? Speak your own mind. Keep it up Cogerson, you are awesome.
He was great in the 1970s. Not much of a fan of his after that time frame.
Very well done. I actually like the 3rd Godfather. I thought Andy Garica made a good bastard son of James Caan. I even liked that Michael died an old man at the end of the movie. Voted up and useful.
Another great hub! Besides the first two Godfather films, my favorite Pacino movies both happen to be based on real events: 'Serpico', about NY undercover cop Frank Serpico; and 'The Insider', about the back story of a '60 Minutes' expose of the cigarette industry. Both fascinating dramas.
One of my favorite actors and people!!! "Wanna say hello to my little friend" ... yep I use that saying ALL the time! I never had the pleasure of crossing paths with Al when I lived in NY but my brother, cousin and a good friend have and they all said he's a down to earth, nice guy. I am a big fan of the Godfather movies and all of Al's movies!!! Thank you cogerson for the stroll down memory lane :-) UP, awesome, tweet!!!
Al is the man, he is the great in Godfather movies, and aweseome in Sacrface. I look forward to see his next gangsta movie.
Great hub! I actually am a Pacino fan. But, I see there are a few of his films I've missed. What I like about him: He does some great movies and he has a real appeal. There are lots of popular Italian-American actors, but Al Pacino is the most attractive of all the big names. He's good at playing good-guy characters and sympathetic bad-guys. My favorite Pacino movies are: Dog Day Afternoon; Serpico; Scarface; ...And Justice for All and The Devil's Advocate.
Fun hub! Voted up!
Great hub, and actor! Pacino rocks as Godfather, and Scarface! Thanks for sharing friend!
I just re-watched The Godfather and The Godfather Part II this past weekend and was again blown away by Pacino's performances. Two of my other favorites are Donnie Brasco and Insomnia. The Gotti movie sounds promising.
Nicely done, I am sorry you carrying a grudge on him, because Sonny got killed and not him, you should just get over it.LMAO. good stuff.
Nice read Cogerson, lots of information in a compact area.
I have been a life long fan of Pacino, I think this is one of the best articles I have read about his movies, you have everthing listed, very nice. I am probably one of the few people that like Cruising, so I wish that one would have been a little higher.
Nice article on Al, I actually grew up in the next neighborhood as him, I think I meet him a few times, not 100% sure as it was years later that he became famous.
A good hub as usual. I loved sea of love. First off pacino's charactor was more realiztic than most movie detectives. The man made several common mistakes, also it had Ellen Barkin a very sexual actress. She doesn't fit the sex symbol sterio type of most hollywood females, i,e, she is to big,not fat just large, her eyes are too small, her nose too big. Yet she is sexy as hell,
I have seen every john Cazale movie except The Conversation. He had distinctive eyes and a Large forhead. He could have went on to be quite an accompleshed actor.
Never saw scent of a woman, you're hub doens't make me want to. Juggling Granades while drunk? Are you kidding me?
The Godfather 2 was good as we saw that micheal lost control of his family and his business. In his defence I think the problem was his wife was a american lady, not an obediant scilian like his mother or his first wife that was killed, As for his business, times were changing, the things his father dealt with were not the same as micheal had.
I have to admit I am not the biggest fan of Pacino since his great run in the 1970s, since then he seems to be living on past laurels.
Cogerson...as ALWAYS your hub is superb...As for Al, it boggles my mind but I've had a love/hate kind of thing goin on with him throughout his career. I liked him as "Michael Corleone" and "Scarface," but so many of his others, I thought he was so mistakenly cast for the part. Sure, I'm no expert or a Critic, but I know what I like. I think it's ME, because he's certainly considered one of the BIG GUYS of the Screen. I even TRIED to like him, funny as that may seem. For awhile I even thought maybe it's the MOVIE I didn't like.....but ALL those movies? I actually walked out in the middle of 2 of his films! "Cruisin" & Scent of a Woman.".....But again....GREAT HUB! AND THE INTERVIEW WITH LADY SUNSHINE IS SUPER!!!
Scarface, donnie brasco, righteous kill, carlito's way, godfather. In no particular order
Righteous Kill didn't get great reviews, but I love Deniro and Pacino so I enjoyed the film
Are you sure DeNiro was in The Godfather?
yes, makes sense. That's like me with rocky or lord of the rings or the original star wars trilogy. Never watch just one.
Very nice hub! I remember hearing James Caan on a talk show that he originally was supposed to play Michael, but then Francis Ford Copolla wanted Al for the part. But I do think that Al Pacino is one of the best actors out there. He can play any part so well. I especially liked "And Justice For All" I remember reading that acting was his pyscho therapy. I was wondering where you obtained those stats?
coger, Lord of the Rings is my cold/and flu movie.
ya, i have the expanded directors cuts... about five hours each. I also have the four hour version of dances with wolves
i feel bad whenever i like costner movies, but he does make good ones on occasion. robin hood prince of thieves, field of dreams, mr brooks, dances with wolves...
never heard of it...
Don't hold a grudge against him because Sonny got shot on the causeway. I mean, could you see Al Pacino playing Jonathan E in "Rollerball?" Sorry that "And Justice for All" and "Serpico" didn't make the list, however.
Thanks for the great hub!
Bruce, I'll add it to my netflix queue
done. keep u posted...
informative blog ......... great sharing
in the last few years i think al;pacino movie selection was not that great.

Pacino is a fantastic actor when he's on his game. Sometimes he has a tendency to go over-the-top, (Scarface) but he's better when he's a bit more restrained. His performances in "The Godfather" films and "Dog Day Afternoon" were terrific. I think his best performance in recent years was "Insomnia". Actually, I don't think the film he actually won a (long overdue) Oscar for--Scent of a Women--was among his best work. I think it was a case of Hollywood saying "We've never given Al an Oscar for all his great work so lets toss him a bone this year". I'm glad he finally got his Oscar but I wish it hade been for one of his better performances.
