For some reason I have never been much of a Al Pacino fan. In case you have not figured it out, I watch lots of movies and going to the movies is one of my favorite things. I have been alive for Pacino's entire movie career, which began in 1969. Yet I have managed not to see one single movie of his at the movie theater. I blame James Caan for this Al Pacino freeze. Back in the day, James Caan was one of my favorite actors. The tv movie Brian's Song was the movie that got me on the Caan bandwagon. So when I finally got to watch the Godfather sometime in the late 1970s, I was pulling for Caan to become the next Godfather. I was very upset that poor Sonny(Caan) died at the toll plaza. Why could it not have been Michael(Pacino) that died at the toll plaza? I now have carried the Pacino grudge for over 30 years. So when I started to get numerous requests to do a Al Pacino hub, I kept putting those requests on the back burner. So KellyE1967, hinton1966 , BryRog57 and YankeesRule here is your Al Pacino hub.

Al Pacino is considered one of the greatest actors ever. Pacino has received eight Oscar nominations and thirteen Golden Globe nominations over his movie career. He won his only Oscar for 1992's Scent of a Woman. From 1972-1975 Pacino was Oscar nominated for an amazing four years in a row. He has picked up two Golden Globe wins ..... 1973's Serpico and Scent of a Woman. Pacino's most famous role is playing Michael Corleone in The Godfather trilogy. My personal favorite Pacino movies besides The Godfather of course, would be Scarface and Heat. Al Pacino fans can look forward to six new Pacino movies in the next 2 and half years. The most promising looks like Gotti: Three Generations, where he will play real life gangster Aniello Dellacroce.

Why use inflated vs actual grosses? The inflated gross makes it much easier to think about how an old movie would compare to todays movies. For example:1972's The Godfather grossed 133.69 million dollars according to Box Office Mojo and was ranked as the number one of all-time...even beating out Gone With The Wind. In 2010 a movie grossing 133.69 million would have only ranked 18th for the 2010 year. By knowing the box office gross and average ticket price....we can figure out tickets sold. The Godfather sold over 78 million tickets. By using tickets sold, we can figure out how much a old movie would have made today by multiplying tickets sold by average ticket price in 2010/11 . If The Godfather would have opened in 2010....it would have finished 1st for the year with 624.90 million in 2011 dollars. When you look at the all-time inflated box office champs....The Godfather is ranked #22 of all-time.

The Best of Al Pacino.

#1 The Godfather(1972)

The Godfather is a classic movie in all regards. It had box office success(#22 of all-time), critical acclaim(won Best Picture Oscar) and memorable performances(Brando won Best Actor Oscar). The American Film Institute has it ranked as the number three movie of all-time...only behind Citizen Kane and Casablanca. IMDB has it ranked as the #2 movie of all-time, only behind Shawshank Redemption. Of the 5000 movies in my database it is the highest scoring movie. Check out Boomer Flick's Godfather hub for lots of great information on the Godfather movie.

Al Pacino as Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part II.

Source: Rotten Tomatoes Community Photos

The Best of Al Pacino:

#2 The Godfather Part II(1974)

The greatest sequel to ever be made....although you could call it a prequel as well as a sequel. It chronicles the story of the Corleones following the events of the first film while also depicting the rise to power of Vito Corleone. Al Pacino returned as Michael Corleone, while relative newcomer Robert DeNiro played the younger version of Marlon Brando's character, Vito Corleone. The movie could not match the box office success of the original but it matched it with an Oscar for Best Picture as well Best Supporting Actor for DeNiro. It marked the first time two actors would win Oscars for playing the same character...as Brando had won Best Actor for playing Vito in The Godfather in the original.

Al Pacino in 1975's Dog Day Afternoon.

Source: Rotten Tomatoes Community Photos

The Best of Al Pacino:

#3 Dog Day Afternoon(1975)

Al Pacino plays Sonny Wortzik in this film classic from the mid 1970s. Based on a true story about a failed bank robbery in Brooklyn. Have you ever notice how bank robberies never seem to go as planned in movies? Pacino received a Oscar nomination for the 4th year in a row for his portrayal of Sonny.. How about some love for the other robber....John Cazale. John Cazale only appeared in five movies in his career....and all five were nominated for Best Picture Oscars....those movies were The Godfather parts I and II, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deer Hunter. A perfect 5 for 5, nobody had done that before or since. He passed away from cancer after filming The Deer Hunter.

Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman ...the role that finally got him that Oscar win.

Source: Rotten Tomatoes Community Photos

The Best of Al Pacino:

#4 Scent of a Woman(1992)

Al Pacino finally won his first Oscar playing Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman. Pacino's character, who lost his sight by juggling hand grenades and drinking alcohol, wants one final last blast weekend before "blowing his brains out". I think when the Academy awarded him this Oscar win, it was pretty much a career Oscar. The Academy did the same thing for Paul Newman when he won for The Color of Money. Both actors have better roles in better movies but they got honored for work that not many people would consider their best work.

Al Pacine as Big Boy Caprice in 1989's Dick Tracy.

The Best of Al Pacino:

#5 Dick Tracy(1990)

Warren Beatty produced, directed and starred in this movie based on the 1930s comic strip character of the same name. Al Pacino received a Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Alphonse "Big Boy" Caprice. Pacino/Big Boy's gang was made up of Dustin Hoffman, Mandy Patinkin, Paul Sorvino and James Caan. In this movie Caan dies when Pacino puts a bomb in Caan's car. The movie was a box office hit(Pacino's 3rd biggest hit) with 194.80 million in 2011 dollars. It received seven Oscar nominations.....winning three Oscars.

Al Pacino's 38 movies ranked by Movie Score. Movie Score is box office results + critical reception + award recognition. Perfect score would be 100.

Pacino is a fantastic actor when he's on his game. Sometimes he has a tendency to go over-the-top, (Scarface) but he's better when he's a bit more restrained. His performances in "The Godfather" films and "Dog Day Afternoon" were terrific. I think his best performance in recent years was "Insomnia". Actually, I don't think the film he actually won a (long overdue) Oscar for--Scent of a Women--was among his best work. I think it was a case of Hollywood saying "We've never given Al an Oscar for all his great work so lets toss him a bone this year". I'm glad he finally got his Oscar but I wish it hade been for one of his better performances.

Good Morning Cogerson:

I kinda like old Al. But it occurred to me as I read the hub that I really haven't seen many of his movies. It also occurs to me that what I generally pay attention to is the overall movie. I don't think I actually focus on the actor unless it is something I feel is truly outstanding. I really enjoyed "And Justice for All", but it's the theme of the movie that appeals to me. I remember the movie extremely well, but his acting...not so much. I'll have to start paying more attention.:)

up and very useful

I have enjoyed Al Pacino Movies very much. Sea Of Love was a very good movie, must have seen it at least six times. Good Acting. Heat with Robert DeNero was a very good movie with all the actors. I had hoped he would get away but alas he did not...having the two actors together was a good move. THANKS FOR THE HUB.

"Manolo shoot dat pis of chit" Pacino yeah, one of my favourites. The first two Godfathers are among my top favourite films. And I watched Scarface on video countless times with my mates during the 80's.

He was great in Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon, would those films have been as good if Dustin Hoffman was the lead? I don't think so.

I didn't like Cruising or Revolution but I did enjoy Sea of Love and he was hilarious in Dick Tracy.

Scent of a Woman isn't one of my favourites but I still cheered when he finally won an Oscar. Heat is a modern day classic.

An excellent hub Conanson. Voted Up and Useful.

Hey Steve....I agree with your points....although he is not one of my favorites I do acknowledge he has made more than a few classics....the 2000s were pretty rough for him at the box office...and at 71 you have to wonder how films the man has left in him...that being said I am glad he is not the Peter O'Toole of this generation...tons of nominations but no Oscars.....as always thanks for reading and commenting

Great hub! I actually am a Pacino fan. But, I see there are a few of his films I've missed. What I like about him: He does some great movies and he has a real appeal. There are lots of popular Italian-American actors, but Al Pacino is the most attractive of all the big names. He's good at playing good-guy characters and sympathetic bad-guys. My favorite Pacino movies are: Dog Day Afternoon; Serpico; Scarface; ...And Justice for All and The Devil's Advocate.

Thanks Colorprinter...too bad you can not verify if that was Al years ago...thanks for reading and sharing that information.

A good hub as usual. I loved sea of love. First off pacino's charactor was more realiztic than most movie detectives. The man made several common mistakes, also it had Ellen Barkin a very sexual actress. She doesn't fit the sex symbol sterio type of most hollywood females, i,e, she is to big,not fat just large, her eyes are too small, her nose too big. Yet she is sexy as hell,

I have seen every john Cazale movie except The Conversation. He had distinctive eyes and a Large forhead. He could have went on to be quite an accompleshed actor.

Never saw scent of a woman, you're hub doens't make me want to. Juggling Granades while drunk? Are you kidding me?

The Godfather 2 was good as we saw that micheal lost control of his family and his business. In his defence I think the problem was his wife was a american lady, not an obediant scilian like his mother or his first wife that was killed, As for his business, times were changing, the things his father dealt with were not the same as micheal had.

Hey ruffridyer....Sea of Love is an underrated movie....although 9th on this list is pretty impressive....as for John Cazelle is part in The Conversation is probably his smallest part...but the movie is pretty good.....Al Pacino does not lose his sight on screen.....the grenade juggling occurs before the movie starts....so the whole movie he is blind....I wonder if they have a deleted scene where we watch him juggle grenades......I agree with you about the Godfather 2....as always thanks for the detailed responses to my hub....it is greatly appreciated.

I have to admit I am not the biggest fan of Pacino since his great run in the 1970s, since then he seems to be living on past laurels.

I agree with you DellMany...but I respect how great his movies were in the 70s, one of best runs ever...thanks for commenting.

Cogerson...as ALWAYS your hub is superb...As for Al, it boggles my mind but I've had a love/hate kind of thing goin on with him throughout his career. I liked him as "Michael Corleone" and "Scarface," but so many of his others, I thought he was so mistakenly cast for the part. Sure, I'm no expert or a Critic, but I know what I like. I think it's ME, because he's certainly considered one of the BIG GUYS of the Screen. I even TRIED to like him, funny as that may seem. For awhile I even thought maybe it's the MOVIE I didn't like.....but ALL those movies? I actually walked out in the middle of 2 of his films! "Cruisin" & Scent of a Woman.".....But again....GREAT HUB! AND THE INTERVIEW WITH LADY SUNSHINE IS SUPER!!!

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 7 months ago

I am right there with you fpherj48, I realize he is one of our greatest actors...but something about his acting style seems to always rub me the wrong way.....I think his career in the 1970s was so strong...he has lived on that success for the last thirty years....his role in Scent of Woman...was a career Oscar versus a Oscar for a great performance. I am not surprised you walked out on Cruisin...it is a horrible film.....thanks for the compliment on the hub and the Sunshine interview.

Cogerson Hub Author 6 months ago

Hey PDXKaraokeGuy nice Top 5....and looking at my Movie Score it likes those movies too...The Godfather #1, Scarface #7, Donnie Brasco #13, Carlito's Way #18 and Righteous Kill...way down there...so it likes 4 of your top 5....thanks for sharing your favorite Pacino movies.

Righteous Kill didn't get great reviews, but I love Deniro and Pacino so I enjoyed the film

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 6 months ago

True PDX....but of their three movies together...I would put Heat and The Godfather well above Righteous Kill....I still thought Righteous Kill was a good movie...not nearly as bad as so many people made it out to be.

Are you sure DeNiro was in The Godfather?

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 6 months ago

Yep I was wrong...as DeNiro was in The Godfather part 2 not part 1...although the last time I watched the Godfather...I watch an edition that took all three movies and put them in the right chronological order...and thus made it almost 10 hour Godfather marathon....so in my mind it is like one big movie now...not 3 movies.

yes, makes sense. That's like me with rocky or lord of the rings or the original star wars trilogy. Never watch just one.

Speaking of Lord of the Rings...I just updated to blu-ray...so I am about to have a Lord of the Rings marathon soon.

Very nice hub! I remember hearing James Caan on a talk show that he originally was supposed to play Michael, but then Francis Ford Copolla wanted Al for the part. But I do think that Al Pacino is one of the best actors out there. He can play any part so well. I especially liked "And Justice For All" I remember reading that acting was his pyscho therapy. I was wondering where you obtained those stats?

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 6 months ago

Hey Charity Squid...James Caan had previously worked with Coppola on a movie called Rain People and they really hit it off...so Coppola knew he wanted Caan for the Godfather. But I think the change that put Caan as Sonny and Pacino as Michael was a very good move. Pacino is a great actor....but I do not think he has been able to recapture the magic of his movie run from 1972 to 1979...but then again that was one of the best runs ever....so it is a very high bar.

The stats come from many different places like Box office mojo, yahoo movies, internet movie database, rotten tomatoes, and old variety magazines for movies before 1983...then I take all the information and great one movie score using all the information I gather...it is not a perfect system but I think it usually does a pretty good job of getting the better movies to the top...thanks for the comments and the compliment...and thanks for giving me my next hub....as I realize that I have yet to a James Caan hub...so if you like Caan check back in a few days for his hub.

Hey PDX....well if you watch the entire special editions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy you will probably feel better as it will take up almost an entire day....and if you wait until Peter Jackson makes the Hobbit 1 and 2...then you might be able to make it 2 days of sitting on the couch and recovering....lol.

Hey PDX...I think one day I will do a hub on Mr. Costner....one of my favorite Costner movies is the little seen Fandango, which is a movie that I can watch numerous times.

I highly recommend...Steven Spielberg helped get it made...and it stars Costner and Judd Nelson as college students in the early 1970s who are graduating/flunking out...who go on one last fling before heading out to Vietnam. Great music and reminds me of my high school friends.

Don't hold a grudge against him because Sonny got shot on the causeway. I mean, could you see Al Pacino playing Jonathan E in "Rollerball?" Sorry that "And Justice for All" and "Serpico" didn't make the list, however.

Thanks for the great hub!

Cogerson profile image

Cogerson Hub Author 3 months ago

KF Raizor....good points on Pacino and Caan. I think could have had a bigger career if he would have picked roles better. But I have to have somebody to blame for Caan not being a bigger star....so Pacino will have to take the blame....lol.

And Justice For All came in at #8 on the movies according to Movie Score while Serpico came in at #6 on the Movie Score table....so they are both Top Ten movies for him. Thanks for the comments and the visit they are both greatly appreciated.

Hey echelon. Thanks for the compliment and the comment. I think you are 100% correct about his recent movies. I just saw parts of Jack and Jill(which reminds me I need to update this hub)....and in a really bad movie his scenes were brutal to watch...and I kept thinking...what is he thinking?
